I set up another server for remote apps and then after installing Sims I changed the shortcut to just run Pulsar and it works fine, just have to rememeber to update the apps servers Sims after each update. I have put Office on also and was tempted to put Macromedia Studio on but I reckon Flash may mess stuff up.

Was browsing around looking at schools that use MS Sharepoint 2010 and there is an article on MSDN about Twynham with a linky at the bottom... when you click the link it takes you to their moodle site

Anyone managed to pull the file that is needed to repair the c0ck up that Sims have done with Exams Manager? I won't rant about the mess, it gets a bit tiring. Everytime I go to the supportnet file I am getting a page cannot be displayed.

Not sure if I can say awake for this... everytime I have gone to bed this series they have made a breakthru.

I've been configuring UAG for a while now and I can't believe how poor some of the configuration. I've always quite liked MS stuff but this and CRM sem to be written for programmers not admins (maybe they are). An example... the upload limit on UAG is set to 1mb... it looks like you have to use a reg hack to increase it. A reg hack??? In this day and age of super fast broadband how poor is 1mb (and I can't get the hack to work). Another one.... the access policies are baffling.. you go into the policy... then go into them again but theres nothing there... you have to use expressions to create them. Oh and one more, drive mapping only works on XP.. I imagine this is because of driveaccess... but driveaccess machines need to be a member of the domain. Bizzare. Wish I had bought a more robust product. On the plus side the remoteapps works a treat.. Sims flies at home. Anyone go any helpful tips about UAG that might help.. the documentation on technet is a bit cack.

Hi guys. I have eventually got round to installing UAG onto my network. Remoteapps works great but the file access isn't what I expected. Is the mapped drives supposed to map a drive to an internal server straight out of the box? The file access tab works okay but I am having trouble setting up home drives as not everyone will use the same script. Any help would be great.

DPM uses plain old disks that are unformatted in your server / iScsi.. AFAIK you cannot use Nas boxes or UNC paths; You can restore a Hyper-V client straight back where it came from.. its very powerful... and as long as you don't change the disks in the clients to dynamic (which I did and wish I didn't) you can recover files from inside the client. Not sure about the bare metal recovery. I have used Firestreamer for a while now and it works pretty good (didn't pay £500 for it). I plug the USB hard drive into the DPM server, load the file the lock the backup door... the backup writes to the hard drive. I recently got some 2Tb USB 3.0 drives to speed it up, I can back up easily over one night now. The recovery sets let you decide how you want the backups to run... short term for the disks... long term for the tapes.. you can back up different drives on the server using different schedules. I am currently backing up 6 servers, all Hyper-V clients and it never fails.. There are some crappy bits, there doesn't seem to be a way to replace the drives without losing all the backups... you can't tell it what data goes on where.

If anyone is interested in this, I purchased one of these and set it up today. It has 4 power ports (you can get adapters so you can use plugs) and it allows you to configure each port seperately. You can schedule power downs like most UPS devices but what I wanted was the power down by ping. You set a IP address that you can ping (I set our ISP's DNS server) and then it allows you to set the ping options... how long between pings... how many missed pings before the device is rebooted and how long before the process starts again. I have just set it up with our BT fibre modem which goes off sometimes and needs a reboot and when I tested it by removing the phone line it worked a treat... after 2 hours of use I heartily recommend it.

Hi, I am having a few teething problems with our new fibre broadband modem which occassionally needs to be rebooted. Not the best method when your sat at home and relying on it for remote access. Has anyone used a device to recycle the power? I did mine as the Simpsons. Homer - the big guy who holds everyhting together (Hyper-v Host) Marge - Does all the work (Sims Server) Lisa - Small but smart and knows alot (second DC) Bart - Annoying but neccesary (DPM backup) The rest are just old names that I won't name until I upgrade them. We were given 8 with ours, just in the process of using them when I get my UAG up and running. I think 2 are set aside so we get 6 to use.

The Engineer did stuff to the exchange then came into school and changed the BT box on the wall and fitted us a new Modem. It went off as soon as I went home on Saturday, I think one of the staff went in and rebooted the modem again and it came back on but when I connected into school at about 5pm using RDP it went off again. I came in this morning and rebooted and it started working again, I presume its to 'find its level' as there is nothing on BT to say why its flakey. It is fast though. RDP was like being in school.

BT came in yesterday to put us on Fibre. It was a cock up and we had no internet all day but we are on now (Saturday). Somethng to do with their radius server not accepting new users. I ran a speedtest with our old ADSL and was getting 3.5Mb/s and about .5 upload Just ran it again and its getting 21.60 and 7.79 upload Its the little things in life that make you smile. Now just to try and keep the data below our agreed limit which may be an issue, wionder if I can throttle the traffic.

We are a small school (400 users and 70 staff) which is why I went for the smaller model. I have a grand to spend on the NAS/SAN drive. My Server will run Hyper-v which is why I am going for a attached storage option.

I am purchasing another T710 to go with the one I got last year for my school which will run as a file server and a failover HYPER-V server in case one fails. The one I got last year has 6 SAS disks and a couple of CPUS and 16Gb ram... this one will be lower spec as I am looking at buying a QNAP NAS drive to go with it. We have 2 sites linked by fibre... pretty much all the school is in 2 halves.. would you purchase 2 smaller NAS drives and put one at each end of the fibre or is that stupid? I was thinking of getting the TS-439 Pro II Turbo NAS. I have a small budget so SANs are out BTW Thanks the help

I have had reports that a new pupil is lookign at proxies to bypass our filtering (Smoothwall). I checked the log yesterday and he was on it alot looking at proxy sites which it looks like they have been blocked. The scary thing is that he has visited lots of sites about Iranian proxies... ones that bypass the governments filtering which obviously are a little bit more advanced than usual. How is our Smoothwall at looking at Persian text? Anyone had this before? I noticed he was on alot of HTTPS sites after the proxies which may be that proxies he has been on so I have enabled the HTTPS filtering now.. pretty scary stuff.
