Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)

What the phone isn't the kitchen? -
How do you currently licence your school for Microsoft Licences (both for OS, Client Access Licences and Office). Can always give @johnlevis a poke from VeryPC to talk though the options available to you

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)
Boredguy replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
Schools get 5 days a year. They can use one from next academic year for the 18th if they choose to take it off (if not already doing so), which you can not normally do. -
These are the ones we got @fiza https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg02988/headphones-stereo/dp/AV17625?ost=av17625

I got some basic ones from CPC for about £3 odd. No microphone included but for listening to stuff they seem fine

What, no You in that list

All our devices have been the Secure windows laptops that come straight from DfE and we give them to students along with some paperwork about damage, expectations etc. They all login as Sted said with the .\localuser account and it has the web filtering setup and device restricted via the DfE InTune settings. Students use the web browser to access Office/G-Suite to do their work and save it straight to the cloud as the devices. If you go for iPads, you can add them to your existing infrastructure using the DEP code, and filtering is then down to what you already have (if anything) for external use.

I can recommend the ones from ICT-Direct. We've already got 20 of them, and ordered another 10 (plus the MAT ordered 20) and they are perfect for the price of £19 (discount for larger orders available) Give @ICTDirect_Dave a poke as he needs more to do now the house is quieter

Instant messaging as the main port of communication
Boredguy replied to JoeRogue's topic in Cloud Services
We limited the users that can send to certain e-mail groups, however moving everyone to using IM style communications has it's drawbacks in the classroom. As we have standardised on using Office 365, all our users have Teams open, so could send messages via that, however it can pop up during lessons, etc when it could be distracting. At least with e-mails the notifications can be supressed, or the page/app left closed. -
Are you using the MSI installer version, which is what we have deployed out. Users have to then launch Adobe Connect from the start menu before they try and use the website that requires it as we do not allow exe files to run from temporary areas for users (nor can they run any from outside specific locations)

Software for sharing teachers screen onto iPad?
Boredguy replied to jeju's topic in Educational Software
We did the separate team to make it easier for the student so they didn't have to go between the different subject ones. If your staff are already using teams, can always do a meeting with the student even if they are in the classroom, or share the Powerpoint/resource via it so they can go through it on the ipad and resize the image as required -
Software for sharing teachers screen onto iPad?
Boredguy replied to jeju's topic in Educational Software
We went down the route of having the student install Teams on their laptop and we created a dedicated group that has our VI student and all her teachers. They can share the documents with the student via it, or start a meeting to display the member of staffs screen that way -
Epson projectors - a standard spider bracket fits, right?
Boredguy replied to pete's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
We have some spider brackets for our Short Throw that retrofitted to our Promethean boards, but for the old ceiling mounted ones we just got a A4 sheet of 3mm Alu and drilled holes to match the screw points on the projector and the bolt holes on the old flat plate on the mount. They all seem to use the same pattern as snagrat said (we have X-29, X39 and EB-530 that all match) -
If it is in the general channel, this should not be happening if the channel setting is set to Only owners can post.. users can react but thats all. If it's in another channel created within the team, then the channel can have moderation permission enabled so only owners can create posts, but other members *can* reply to that post, but not create a new conversation. It does not have the same "only owner can post" as the general channel does from the options available. Not tried creating a sub channel via Powershell yet to see if that makes any difference to the ability for only owners to post yet

RM SafetyNet - RADIUS problems
Boredguy replied to Valyyn's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I was not aware that RM Safetynet had a NPS option as the user based filtering option used RM Unify to validate credentials. I do know that the User based Filtering captive portal page for users with BYoD does not work if you are using NAT for your users, it has to be over the schools assigned IP range only (so we've just stuck with our staff users getting the standard student level filtering with their personal devices) -
Moving Shared Drives to SharePoint - any pointers!
Boredguy replied to mdrabble's topic in Cloud Services
Also if any of your currently shared folders contains documents that are used for mail merge, it can be a headache fixing them to work post migration as Office doesn't really like it when we've tried, and there is a "fix" which involves renaming the .docx file to .zip, then editing a file within it to have the URL path for where the source file will be, but it's not a user friendly process. -
The data usage had been extended to March 2021 along with the laptop filtering from the last information we had from the DfE back in lockdown 1

If you have any filtering set on the GPO to only apply to Admin users and not all authorised users, make sure in the Delegation tab within the GPMC you have Domain Computers set as Read permission so it can actually try to apply the policy
