I'm sure there was a caveat previously that to use the Office365 installation via the A1 Plus For Students/Faulty on school devices you had to ensure you had a valid volume licence agreement which covered the Office deployment in the first place as it was not devices that just 1 user would be using as part of their "Device" activations (same way that Shared Computer Activations doesn't come out of the users installation count because it's assumed you have a suitable volume licence). We've worked on that basis for a while and I've not seen anything to correct my thinking so far.

It depends who the school gets the SIMS support from, as to who is responsible for deploying it out to Solus 3. If it's not showing in S3 even after you force it to check for updates, then give the schools SIMS support team a call. It might be Capita direct, or it could be a third party provider like SchoolICT, but who ever it is should be able to resolve it for you.

[1903, au] Windows 10 - random NO INTERNET issue!
Boredguy replied to kennysarmy's topic in Windows 10
Well if its any help @kennysarmy I don't have msftconnecttest.com in our SWGfL Safetynet list and the only time we ever get the globe icon is when the network cable is disconnected on the station. All our stations pick up the transparent proxy at SWGfL by default, and the users get the userbased sslfiltered proxy assigned once they log on. We don't use smoothwall. -
secure storage for confidential pupil data
Boredguy replied to mrstrong's topic in How do you do....it?
According to https://www.accessrecordsmanagement.co.uk/record-keeping-in-schools/, there is several factors when records need to be kept for 25 years, but that would either be via your MIS system as that information is typical migrated if you move platforms, or via paper format which is still likely to be the best future proof format. Yes it does mean maybe having a store cupboard with half a dozen or so secure filing cabinets. Other option would be to store it on CD/DVD as again likely to have better long term life than on a USB flash drive, and kept securely in a safe. But thats just my thoughts. -
[ms office - o365] Outlook Client Slow to Launch
Boredguy replied to Boredguy's topic in Office Software
Might have resolved the issue with a bit of tweaking of the template file and the GPO. 1 - Sync changes from none to SyncProvider in the workstation GPO (set delay to 2s as well instead of 10s) 2 - Copied all the MS template files to our network location and set the GPO to replace the MS Templates 3 - Updated the MicrosoftOutlook2016CAWinXX template file so that the version number inside it was 2, and the Asynchronous value was set to true Workstations now loading Outlook splash screen within 3 seconds, as the UE-V template file was making the sync sit and wait for the full 60 odd seconds before failing -

Well turning the whole of UEV off for the station did fix the issue. Monday it will be a case of turning bits on and off. Didn't think Chromium Edge sync worked unless you had the paid for version of Azure which we currently don't -

Yes we have UEV as we need that for Edge, Chrome and a few other bits -
If the laptops were provided direct to the trust, getting the admin passwords just requires e-mailing the XMA team with the serial numbers. If the laptops were provided via LA's, then they have the passwords already and it's up to them if they provide it, as they are the owners unless otherwise stated (since they got them for specific students) For the MiFi dongles, well come October we might get details from the DfE for passwords etc for future use unless they extend the scheme at that point. Not sure we should be advocating bypassing the passwords on devices that might not be school property (yet)
-
Don't think the admin password was provided by the DfE, but then again I'm not the point of contact for the Trust so could be wrong

Live captions is a preview feature at present according to my Teams when clicking on the ... during a meeting

It's a fair enough answer, and certainly not one that we've ever entertained looking at (otherwise we'd likely end up with staff expecting us to support it as well!). Certainly with the Office licence for home use, it's only valid for as long as they have the assigned licence in Office 365, so when you delete their account, the licence for the home installed version of office expires. It was a pain enough when we had staff interested in the previous discount office purchase scheme before the free one came along.

Why would you want to provide Windows 10 for staff and students at home? New computers generally come with it anyway, and it seems the free upgrade from Win 7/8 to 10 apparently still works (not tried it for a while).

no add-ins, as it's doesn't load that until the splash screen appears and says about loading the profile. -

Interesting, hadn't noticed that behaviour but yes that works, then your left with 2 instances running, with the 2nd one launching and loading profile in a normal length of time. -

Boredguy replied to Boredguy's topic in Office Software
No progress yet @chaplic the Autodiscover result from the Autoconfiguration test (on a station working fine, and one that takes 60 seconds + to show splash screen) shows no errors and resolves virtually instantly. Between time of clicking for Outlook to launch, and the splash screen appearing 60 seconds later, there is no calls being made on the workstation from the Outlook.exe file, or anything else that appears to be looking to the DNS lookup according to procmon. This is for admin level users and normal users so it makes it just as confusing. -
Oh thats not an issue, we already have a powershell script that sets the wallpaper for normal and widescreen
-
Having things run when logging off not a good idea as it could stop the process. Could always have the user wallpaper say "Have you done X,Y,Z?". I'm fully expecting our MAT logon wallpaper to be updated to remind users to clean the keyboard/mouse when they log off/log on.

Turns out the Smart 30 was ordered and arrived the other week.. Nice that they tell me Still going to be better than our 12 year old Sunlight K3 that we can't get ribbons for now.

We are looking for the Smart 30, but looks like it's now been replaced with the 31 (explains why DigitalID were out of stock a fortnight ago)

[ms office - o365] Outlook Client Slow to Launch
Boredguy replied to Boredguy's topic in Office Software
Yes, mistyped the name in the original post. Nothing showing as being done for the whole of the 60 seconds. Outlook.exe is shown as running in taskman but sits there with fingers in it's ears for a good 60 seconds. -
Email retention from the ground up
Boredguy replied to Jobos's topic in Data Protection & Information Handling
As a trust, it was decided that for the majority of staff they can only retain messages for 1 year. There is a subset of staff who need content for longer (finance etc), so they can retain 2 years in their mailbox, and a 3rd year in their online archive. Our shared mailboxes are limited to just 90 days. We informed all staff across the MAT before last years summer break so they had time to clean up and ensure any content they needed was identified, then we enabled the retention policy once we got back in September. -
For the past couple of months, we've noticed that Outlook 365 client can take around 60 seconds from clicking the shortcut until the loading splash screen pops up and it starts to process the profile on the majority of the stations. Now I'm find with it maybe taking time to process the profile etc once the splash screen is showing, but it's damn annoying when the user doesn't even know it's launching for nearly a minute. I know we are not the only people with the issue as there is a thread on reddit with the exact same issue from the last month. Running Procmon hasn't shed any clues as it appears that its doing nothing at all in the 60 seconds until the splash screen appears. Tried reinstalling stations (both physical and VM), and its occurring on both 32 and 64 bit version of the Outlook 365 build. Autodetect seems fine, and rest of office applications launch within a second or two, it's just Outlook.
