We use a method similar to this, works very well.

If you're using GPO to setup your wireless,go to whichever policy sets your wirelss properties, go to Computer COnfiguration > Windows Settings > Secuirty Settings > Wireless Network.... You should then have a list of policies (or idealy only one) listed in the right hand pane. Right click on this an dchoose properties. Make sure the "Automaticaly COnnect to non-prefered networks" box ISN'T ticked. The go to the Prefered Networks tab and check that only your SSID is listed. If you're not using GPO go to the properties for you wireless connection. Choose the "Wireless Networks" tab. Make sure only your SSID is listed, then click advanced and make sure "Automaticaly COnnect to non-prefered networks" box ISN'T ticked. However you also need to check that your computers are suitably locked down so the users can't change the wireless settings. I'd strongly suspect your users are delibratly changing which network the laptops connect, either to try to get round internet filtering or just because kids like doing stupid thing.

Oh Junior Tech used to have his speakers so loud it did actually wake the dead (which was handy since we had a vacancy for a general studies teacher). I made a script so I could remotely make his PC burp. He soon switched his speakers off.

Try seeing if the BIOSes have the same settings, many BIOSes have a legacy settings which makes SATA controllers more compatible (I've forgoten the exact terminology). It might be this is enabled on some of the motherboards and not on the other ones. You could try swapping a hard drive from a machine that won't ghost into one that will, might help you track down the problem by seeing if the fault travels.

It might be worth running the drive manufacturer's tools on the drives see if they report any errors. Another thing is just to check that ghost is actualy detecting the hard drive and not doing something daft like pointing it's self the to the boot media. Is it an SATA or an IDE hard drive.

Erm, how does this work? If you need 30 lappys for a class then that'll be 5 boxes. How often are they used? As for lapsafes. We've got a 32 laptop trolly. The thing is so heavy that I was agreed no one should be expected to move it on a regular basis. It's a bit of a white elephant to be honest. We've found increasing the number of IT rooms to be easier. Students are portable by design, with computers it costs extra.

Well said, the biggest problem I can see is with a system this large it will be impossible properly assess the end user's needs. It will then go the way of the NHS IT system with the system being implemented and turning out to be complely unfit for purpose. Massives changes will then have to be made and because these weren't in the scope of the original agreement the developers the price will be steep. The sensible thing would be to set down standards for transfer data between departments and encourage local governments to use cooperatives to joint develop or procure software where appropriate.

Never mind just mended it. I saved a blank file from smart notebook. I then opened both the dud file and the blank file in a text editor. I then copied the first line from the blank file to the dud file.

Hi Guys, I've got a smart notebook file (with a .notebook extension). When I try to open it I get the following error "Cannot open the file, If the file is from a newer version of Notebook software, try saving it as a version 9 document." I'm assuming that this isn't a version issue since the document was created in version 9.7, the same as the version it was created with. (Although I have tried it on version 10 just to check, it gives the same error message). Anyone seen this before and have any ideas?

I'm afraid that it really doesn't help at all. What does an Admin do and what does a Mod do? And my own feeling is that a lot of the problems stem from the fact that the technical forums are now an unnavigatable mess. I don't look at them, I look at technical posts on the front page and that's all. I can't really be bothered to scroll through a list of millions of forums most of which overlap or apply to technology that's used by a very small number of people. Seriously do we need a dedicated Netware forum? There were 6 posts in there last year, surely it should come under *nix. If the Netware forum is to stay it should be listed with the other server OSes, not between Learning Network Manager (what's that forum for anyway?) and Network and Classroom Management. Net result BTRD and GD tend to be the sections I look in most. They are also the two forums where I will make a flippant rather then a useful post. EDIT: Some additional posts were made while this one was writen including ElsieGee's which has cleared it up a little.

Sounds to me like it's the school's responsibility. Another thing to consider, if the child's DSi is not replaced the school will have great difficulty confiscating high value items in the future. Do you really think a child will hand an item over if they'll never see it again?
