We're currently trialing 3 phones: 1. iPhone 2. Blackberry Curve 8900 3. Nokia E71 Not impress with the Nokia E71 (we were warned off the N96 by a well known telecoms company). Impress with the Blackberry and the iPhone, the iPhone is slightly in the lead due to the bigger screen. Both of those phones look and feel nice, plus connect straight to an Exchange server. -Ken

On some of our servers we've teamed up intel and broadcoms together, I can't remember whose software we used (it's either intel's or broadcom's own). The one other thing I remember was that if you team up to different speed network cards, all of them will then go down to the lowest speed card*. IMO if you're going to team up network cards, either team up the two 100mb ones and then either buy & install another gig one or don't team the gig one up. -Ken *this is going back a couple of years, the teaming software may have changed since then.

You can do what we did. We advertised with the Jobcentre Plus, Connexions & placed a advert in the local paper. We had 20 people interested in the post. -Ken

Depends if you deal with alot of Office queries (eg how to do this, how to do that, etc) or if part of your role was to training people up using Office. If you don't then no, not really. Instead of doing the iTQ, which is user based, why don't you look at the NVQ for IT Professionals Level 3, 4 & maybe 5 (depending on what your role entails), which is technical/support based. Other options would be the MCDST & MCSA, they are excellent qualifications to have. If you already have a level 3 qualification and 5 years experience, then the LCGI from C&G's is another good qual to have. You have the degree program which is internationally recognised and counts towards points if you decide to migrate to another country. There's also the SDI Service Desk Managers cert. There are also professional awards you can go for, like the ICTTech - which states that you meet and work to at least to level 3 on the SFiA and the CITP - which states that you meet and work to at least level 5 of the SFiA. There are alot of different certs & quals and depending on where you see yourself going and how you want to shape your career will dictate on which ones you go for. -ken

The A+ qualification are 2 exams, each one costing £114 direct from Pearson Vue. For courses it can cost anywhere from about £350 to £3000 depending on where you take the course. Some colleges bundle the A+ with iPRO hence a lower cost due to Government funding. Last I heard Huxlow School didn't have an IT Manager, not sure if that's still the case though (it is going back a couple of months, however I haven't seen an advert since then). -ken

Personally I would do the MCSE then do the upgrade exams. Windows 2003 will be around for at least another 5 years, plus unlike the new MCTS/MCITP credentials the MCSE will not retire. BTW, there is no MCSE 2008, there's the MCITP: SA and the MCITP: EA, unlike the MCSA/MCSE route the SA & the EA are aimed at 2 different job roles. -ken

It will be, but like the CITP (which is two levels higher), it has to filter into the real world and people have to be aware of it and what it stands for. Afer all it's a new credential. I don't see a problem with that as ECUK did a very good job of informing/advertising the CEng, IEng & the EngTech to the engineering community -Ken

I agree, a few years ago I would have not touched Acer products with a barge pole. However in recent years, I have to say that Acer has pulled it's finger out. Now a days whenever I have to purchase laptops it's always a choice between Acer and 1 other brand and I, myself, have the Acer 6920G Gemstone laptop - one very nice machine, plus some part are easily upgradable (too bad I can't get the Gemstone 6930 this year with the T9400 & the GT GC) -Ken

I would second that. The person that we're going to be employing soon will be put on an apprenticeship (level 2 & 3) which includes the A+, Network+, MCDST, MCSA, etc... However this is for the support side of IT. However if you're talking about web development, then take a look at the CIW range of certs and the Adobe ACA range of certs. Then for programming, I would strongly look at the academic side like the .Net programming diploma (level 2/3), HNC's and degree's. Then the professional range of certs once your in the job. -Ken

I don't know, that would mean changing the whole membership structure, including the AMBCS, MBCS & the FBCS and I'd doubt that they'll do that. The AMBCS, MBCS & FBCS are organisational specific, whereas the ICTTech & CITP are IT industry based, just like the IET has the oganisational post-nominals of TMIET, MIET & FIET and offer the EngTech, IEng & CEng for engineers (I know the BCS also offer the IEng & CEng). -Ken
