After you use the delegation of Control wizard in ad, instead of installing the admin pack for XP, you can install this program. They get what they need to do it, nothing more, nothing less. No, but there is a work around if you really want the XP admin pack on Vista, but it's not 100% compatible. However I would recommend using RSAT for Vista, this is the new version of the XP admin pack that is designed for Vista. -Ken

I've found Halcyon very good (in particular Danny), we've even bought our MS agreements (for 2 years, before that Civica) thru them as they were the cheapest. They aren't the cheapest at everything (no supplier is) but at most things they are. -Ken

Hi All, A question for all of you (after a summary of us)... We're currently a Specialist School and the head wants us to become a Trust school. I do not mind either way. Now my question to those who have become a Trust school (or in the process): What companies did you approach? Do you know if they are willing to go into partnership with another school? Shouldn't do. I believe what is fair to both sides is that if you leave within a year then you repay the full amount, after a year I believe the slate should be wiped cleaned. Technology moves so fast by the time you don't have to pay for the course Windows XP's support from MS would have be discontinued

You may also want to check out practice exams from Preplogic, Transcender and/or Boson. I've used Measure-Up practice exams (the ones that come with MS Press books) and didn't get on with them. -Ken

There is no right amount, it boils down to the following: 1. network (reliability) 2. technical support (whether they are efficient or not) 3. users (if they are ICT confident and trained or not) 4. Service Desk (if there is one or not) If you have a perfect one, Becta "recommends" 1 tech to every 150 machines, but it can go down to 1 tech to every 50 if it's in a bad state. About us: Secondary school (with 6th form): 1. Approx 1200 students 2. Approx 150 staff 3. 550 PC's & Laptops (this includes 7 mobile classrooms) 4. 16 Servers (Physical as well as virtual, including 2 x Exchange, 2 x ISA, etc) 5. IP CCTV (currently 4 IP camera's linked up to one of the above servers) 6. Telephone system (including IP Phones) 7. Fixed projectors in almost every room 8. Approx 20 smartboards 9. Bookable items as 4 mobile projectors, 4 digital camera's, 2 camcorders, etc That's off the top of my head, then: Primary School: 1. Approx 200 students 2. Approx 20 staff 3. Approx 50 laptops & PC's 4. 2 Servers Off the top of my head. And to support all of that there's us, IT Services: 1 IT Manager (me), 1 Senior tech and 1 virtual person who we are still waiting for (for the last 2 years) That's us... -Ken

The Network+ is actually mapped to NQF level 3, have a word with the company that will supply the NVQ 3 training. With the Network+ you may find that it covers some/a few units of the NVQ 3 training (dependant on the modules choosen), hence less you have to do. Or see if you can integrate the Network+ with the NVQ 3. Alot of NVQ programs now are integrating professional certs into their programs (the ACA for example). -Ken

Have you contacted Sims about this? And are you using their step by step guide? If not, I believe I still have it somewhere, if you want. For me the only reason the FMS migration failed the first time round was because there was a user name that had spaces in it, don't know if that'll help. -Ken

I agree, one of my mates, bought a cheap Sat Nav 1 1/2 years ago. This year they stopped supporting it (no more map updates or firmware/software updates, etc). He ending up buying a TomTom this year. As for me I have a Tomtom and apart from the baterry that needs replacing (it's a couple of years old) it hasn't failed me yet You can pick up a cheap-ish TomTom or Garmin of Ebay, if you do not fancy paying the price of a new one As for features, speed cams are always good one, and the new GPS's come with bluetooth and can link with your mobile phone so you do not need a separate hands free kit. -Ken

We've done the August upgrade and it all seems fine, the only thing is that we can't donwload the exam results - nothing to do with Sims, the builders doing work at our site broke our fibre line to the outside world At least BT is in fixing it now -Ken

For software to help manage your network, what about Microsoft System Centre Operations Manager? It's SMS & MOM merged together. See how much it would be if you put it on your MS licencing agreeement (providing you have one). As for NAS, the cheapest option is to convert an old server/PC, stick a GB NIC and a TB HDD in it. For the Middle-east there's: eduSwift, Administrator's Plus (the Rediker Software Student Management System) and Skoolee Tools, just to name a few. Apart from that there must be hundreds out there, just in the Northants area, I know of 4 different ones -ken
