We used to use Ranger Print Manager, however we also found that to not be as efficient. We've now moved to papercut. We also have our problems with Ranger, however replacing the whole suite (LAN Ranger & RRC) isn't high priorty at the moment. Moving to RM is out of the question as that slows down machines even more (one of the reasons why we left in the first place ) -Ken

If the need is only for Windows XP, Server 2k3 and Exchange. You could just take a look at the MCSA (70-270 - Client XP, 70-290 - Server 2k3, 70-291 - Networking and 70-284 - Exchange). However like it's already been mentioned here, I would also recommend the A+/Network+ combination and the MCDST, before starting the MCSA. -ken

That's true, just because someone has a BSc or a MCSE, it doesn't mean that they can successfully team lead, manage projects, line manage or get the best deals out there for your dept/company. And considering that IT is everywhere - medical equipment, airports/planes, military, etc. What's to say that in the future there won't be "loss of life" because something wasn't implemented correctly? -ken

We actually used AIBuilder (comes with Ghost) to build an .exe that we just run with a script on the client PC's. -ken

That's funny, I have my degree (BSc Computing) and a few other professional IT certs, yet they aren't accredited so I had to "progress" the slow and long way to get to MBCS. The weird thing is that out of the 4 or 5 different Computing degress that UCN (now known as University of Northampton) do, mine is the only one not accredited by the BCS. Oh well, a couple of more years to go -Ken

At our school we currently have 3 science tech's (2 part-time and 1 full time) to support the science dept & science teachers. We the IT dept have myself (IT Network Manager) and 1 senior IT Tech for the whole school, we look after over 500 clients pc's/laptops, 13 servers, wireless, telephone system, the IP CCTV, the technical side of the VLE, etc - kinda sounds like a joke. It seems like us that work in IT are "second class citizens", if you're not directly linked to an academic dept it's "try again next year". If you're linked to an academic dept, well you get the idea... -ken

I use to use Citrix/thin client but removed it as it couldn't handle alot of the applications (especially multi-media ones). Maybe one day we'll go back to using thin client, but until that day - Fat all the way... -ken

Hi guys, Thanks, checked that and it seems ok. We haven't used lanID's since we upgraded to Sims .Net. FMS runs fine internally without them. Thanks for that. Thanks to all of you that are throwing things for me to check/do. We will not be defeated on this matter -ken

Hi guys, We use Sims .net and FMS (old SIMS), we have gotten sim .net to work via TS and VPN, however we are unable to get FMS to work via VPN, I don't really want to install FMS on our TS just yet. This is the error that I get when I try to run FMS via VPN: Unhandled Exception in SIMS FMS Module General SQL Error (Sybase)(ODBC Driver) Unable to conenct to database server:unable to start database engine Alias: dbInitialConnection Now if I connect internally, FMS works fine. If anyone has experienced this already, please let me know, if not I may have to install this onto my TS server.. -Ken p.s. we use the TCP/IP protocol

Also use Papercut NG at my place, found it better than a few other products and reasonably price, added that it also works with AD and is server based (some of the products we tried weren't). -Ken
