Will you be upgrading to server 2008 this summer?
Kitkatninja replied to FN-GM's topic in Windows Server 2008
We're already running a couple of 2k8 member servers, we'll be implementing a couple 2k8 DC's over this summer as 2 of our DC's will be retired. Why are we running 2k8? Increased security, Hyper-V, to a lesser extend power consumption (2k8 over 2k3), terminal services & remote apps, and of course lets not forget experience (just in case...) -Ken -
Congrats on your new job -ken

I use Halcyon as they came cheaper than Dabs and Civica (when we renewed last year). -Ken

I just replaced mine and my senior tech's laptop (Toshiba SP A100 - C2D 2GHz, 2gb of Ram, x1600gc) with the Acer 6920g. Nice laptop (we got it cheaper from our suppliers), the only gripe I have with it is the keyboard, it isn't as nice as the Tosh's. Had to wipe the OS to put Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition on so that I can use all 4gb of ram. It runs VM's sweetly... -Ken

We use EMBC for our main school line, however we also have a NTL business line coming in as a backup line, online exams, etc. You can get the NTL business line for about £500 a year (for a 10mg line) then buy something line Bloxx for your filtering. You could also get the NTL dedicated line for about £15k pa and that 8mb up & down. -Ken

How about self-studying for the Comptia Network+? You could use this book, one benefit the Comptia Network+ has is that you don't need to renewing or recertify every 3 years. Then when your ready to take the exam, just book yourself to do the exam at any Vue or Prometric testing centre. -Ken

Congrats mate on the pass -Ken

You may want to check out this Certiport page. It has "pre-tests" for the whole MCAS range. It does state that it's only valid in the US, but it also states: If you're unsure whether or not to try the pre-test from Certiport's website, you may want to contact your local Certiport testing centre (the MCAS can only be taken at Certiport centres and not Prometric like other MS exams). Hope this helps -ken

It makes no odds to me (like I said I'm neither for or against it) whether or not my school does go down the BSF route. I'm not trying to sound heartless, but I'm trying to get out of the education sector anyway - this was more out of curiousity -ken

Hi Guy's, Just doing a little looking and found that my area: Wellingborough, Northants is in group E (wave 13-15), and is one of the last schools that will be "BSF"-ed. See here (the excel spreadsheet). It looks like waves 7-15 is still in management consultation until the 4th of July. Just rang up Northants County Council and left a message for more info. Currently, I'm neither "for" or "against" as I don't have enough infomation. I been thru alot of the post and alot are negative about BSF, but does anyone actually have anything good to say about the BSF? -Ken

All I can say is shop around, there are card protection policies out there that start from as little as £15 per year, First Direct are offering it from £20 pa and some banks like HSBC are offering 3 years for £50. Have a word with your bank, they may have a similar offer for you. -Ken
