I would recommend you either check out your local college, for example our local college offers MS training up to MCSA level (sometimes MCSE level) for £350 per module, which is alot cheaper than private training companies. Another option is to see if your place can become a Microsoft Academy. Or if your school as a MS agreement with software assurance, buy the MS Press Self-Paced Training kits and work thru that. Once you've worked thru them, but something like Preplogic or Boson test sims to test your knowledge. Hope this helps -ken

We've got about 1200 students and I've budgeted for about £7k (last years price was approx £6.5k), however it does depend on what sims modules you actually have - our yearly maintenance will be under £9k if we take up lesson monitor. We're supported directly by Capitaes Bedford Hope this helps. -ken

That's how it is at my place. Head of IT (or ICT) is for the academic department. Network Manager or IT Manager is the head of IT Services. The technical side does not tell the academic side how to teach and the same goes the other way. It's taken 2 1/2 long years (been here 4 years now) for the school to change and accept it - finally -Ken

According to MS is it possible, see here and here. In the new finanical year, we'll be upgrading our 2k3 domain to include the 2k8 schema (eg adding a 2k8 DC and upgrading AD) Hope this helps -Ken

I know that the school where my mates works at uses NTL Business (Virgin) and they have no problems with them. The extra that they have to provide is a decent filtering system. -ken

Thought as much, if you go down this route and can't afford the webparts - there's always the option to "embed" the webpage into sharepoint. -Ken

We use the 3com Unified Wireless switch and WAP's. They have a web interface and have had relatively no problems with them. -Ken

No I'm not advertising for my post (well not yet anyway). I'm actually posting on behalf of another school in my area. Huxlow College is advertising for an ICT Manager, starting salary of £23,749. While I'm also interested in transfering, I also know that I may not get this job. So I have asked them if I can spread this vacancy around. I'm on £21.5k - (IT) Network Manager supporting approx 1200 students, approx 150 staff members, 550 PC's, 13 server's. And of course always keeping my eyes open for another job -Ken

I got into the education sector by applying for IT jobs in schools & colleges when they were advertised in our local paper. Another bit of advice is to "just be yourself" if you do get an interview. -Ken

I work for Tresham (part-time in the evenings) in their IT academy part teaching MS courses, while I don't have any direct dealing with setting a centre up as an academy, I can give you the contact details of the person who does (if that helps). -Ken

Following on from this thread. We currently running Alice and we're thinking about either upgrading to either Eclispe .net or Oliver. Judging by what you guy's are saying, I am trying to hold off for a while. Eclispe .net wants our business, so they are doing an online demo of their .net product, however are there any schools in the Northants area that can show us a "real live" implementation of Eclispe .net. So that we can make a more imformed decision. Thanks -Ken
