To answer your question, regardless of where it's the 64bit edition or the 23-bit eval version, you do need a server OS (Windows 2003 or 2008) to run it. See here. You can only install the Exchange Management tools on a client manchine (eg Vista or XP). -Ken

I can't tell you the process as I've never gone thru the interview process for the NHS. However I've copied this from a job advert for a ICT Tech at one of the NHS trusts: Generally speaking the recommended 3 or 4 main entry level/1st tier certs would be the following: Comptia A+, Comptia Network+, the MCDST and the MCTS: Vista. I would not overload yourself at this point as you're already doing the Cisco certs. However how about the ITIL v3? Which wouldn't take as much effort as a MS exam (unless you're talking along the lines of the MCDST or the MCTS: Vista). Other than that, have you considered joining a professional IT association like the BCS or IET? Depending on what level you're currently working at, you may even qualify for the ICTTech registration or even Chartered Status (CITP). -Ken

Contact the company that you buy your MS licensing thru. We pay under £80 per year for the Enterprise edition of MS Server (with 2008, it allows us to run up to 4 VM without having to buy another licence ) You can see here for an example of prices. -Ken

Hi guys, Just wondering, have any of you hired in a couple of techs to assist with your summer jobs (for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks)? If so, how much and what companies? Looks like we're going to be doing a bit more than what we were expecting and need to find out if it is feasible or not (comes within budget). There is a Holiday inn about 5 mins drive away, to stay while on your holiday The 3 people on the course, here's where they came from: Me: Wellingborough, Northants Dave (also works in a school): Plymouth 3rd guy (forget his name, but he also did the Cat cabling course that was on the Thursday): Scotland So a wide selection of people from all round the country, just to come to this course. -Ken

We bought 10 of them a couple of week ago, with 3 year edu warranty and the start packs (bag, mouse & USB hub). It came pre-loaded with Vista, however we got a XP downgrade disc in each box. All round it's a sturdy laptop, however I'm basing on having them for just under 2 weeks (however we have other L300's around which are realiable). It is not flashy, but a good work horse Basing on how we're finding them (so far...) I would say it's a good laptop to get. -ken

We went thru the same thing, it didn't work, then we installed SP2 and the above mentioned software, still didn't work, then after a couple of minutes (& a reboot) it just sprung into life... -Ken

We've linked 15 up to our Exchange server with no problems, however you have to install the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Administration Web tool on your Exchange server first of all. See here (in the Exchange tab). -ken

I posted about Fibre Optic courses here on Certforums. I found two, but will be going on the 1 day one on Friday (provided my registration goes thru in time ). Both of the courses lets you gain BICSI CEC credits (if you need them). The 2 day one let you gain 15 hours worth, while the 1 day one gives you 7 hours. As for prices the 2 day course is £500, however the one day course is £350 Like I said, provided my registration goes thru, I'll give feedback on how the course went -Ken

Depending on where the old PC is in relation to the wireless modem/router/switch, if you can't connect it directly, how about using Home Plugs? I use the cheaper version and the down stairs PC works well on the internet at home -Ken

We had a play around with it a few weeks back and found it relatively easy. Added to that, compared with alot of blade systems, it was alot cheaper. I believe with the "internal SAN" the maximum you can have is 4.2TB raw, which after Raid 3 brings it down to about 3TB, but you can add the Promise storage unit with up to 12TB. -Ken

What release version of Windows 7 are you using? Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version? Do the laptops/machines you're trying to run the OS on meet the minimum requirement (eg at least meet the requirements for Vista)? -ken

Well the old track do not have an expiry date, but they do have a time limit as all exams. You can only gain the cred while the exams are still live. The exam vouchers do have a time limit, 12 months from when bought. You can get "cheaper" vouchers that have an early expiry date. -Ken

I would say £20-£25 depending on area and services rendered (especially in this climate). Then anything "project-like" (not day to day jobs), quote them extra as that's what it is. -ken

Thought that I'd post about this as we went thru the process of finding an organisation that provides this. We did try other colleges and private organisations, however they either had additional costs associated with their program, didn't have the right NVQ program (user instead of technical/professional) or just didn't do it. Cambridge Regional College does the Apprenticeships in IT & Telecoms at levels 2, 3 & 4 (I was told that they do level 4 by our IT Tech who we're currently putting thru level 2). The level 2 also incorporates the Comptia A+, which is also a stand alone qualification. And if you meet the requirements the program is totally free (you can still take the program if you don't, however there would be a cost to it). Hope this helps some -Ken

Hi All, Thought that you may find this interesting: NVQ 3 in Management for Free* While I can't say that this is UK wide (I really do not know), Tresham Institute is offering the NVQ 3 in Management for free under ESF. See here (under "Business Solutions Training Guide April-July 2009" p.11).
