I don't know about FITS, but I agree with ITIL - I self studied the v3 foundation and had to stick needles in my eyes just to keep me awake, lol Here are the details for the 2 levels of exams: Practitioner Manager I believe the Practitioner one is almost ready, but the Manager's one is still in development (don't quote me though). They are accredited by the SQA (Scotland's version of Englands NQF) so it's not only accepted through-out the UK, but also internationally (as it's a recognised and mapped qualification). Strange we've experience the total opposite: communicated with AD and Exchange, but inventory didn't work properly. They do a good educational price £150, but money is always tight regardless of where you are... There is a helpdesk template that you can download for Sharepoint from Microsoft. However according to what I've read it's not ITIL/FITS compatible. Saying that if you're not worried about that, you can try it out. After all it's free Not sure, I know that you can import a webpage into Sharepoint, but as for a Sharepoint webpart, I don't know if one exists. -Ken

While performance is a slight issue, it's not the main reason why we're moving helpdesk/servicedesk system. We're going to be implementing the cut down version of ITIL at our place: FITS. As MLH is compatible with the ITIL/FITS, it was a good enough time as any to make the move -Ken

Via an Apprenticeship scheme. For the first year: £95 p/w, then it goes up to at least minimum wage after a year. Or you could contact your local college/Uni to offer student placement -Ken

Are you running the full SQL product or the express version? Do you have all SQL tools installed? And are you supported by Capita or another company? (Not sure if the last question is relevant). I've written a short guide that may work for you, if you want it. -ken

I did my degree part-time, but in the evenings (2 evenings a week) first two years (to get my HNC) thru De Montford Uni, then transfered to UCN (now known as University of Northampton) to finish my BSc. For me it was cheaper than going thru the OU, plus it also helps interacting with other mature students and tutors twice a week. No that's not the only way to go about it, there's also the GTP route. Or if you want to teach in further education, rather than secondary education there's the CertEd, PTTLLS/CTTLLS/DTTLLS route. You may also want to join/check out the IfL. I had to join them when I was a Lecturer for our local college. -Ken

While we haven't used it for the Brain Training game, we have used it for the sports (we had several fitness sessions, thru PE). I've used it with the Brain Training game at home. For day to day student printing, I believe that it'll be ok. Going to try it out when I get back to work, going to see if the Office 2007 adm/admx admin pack will allow me to set the default font for students (via a GPO). -Ken

We're going to be changing from Spiceworks to My Little Helpdesk here. Performance is not as good as it should be (imo) since the release of 4, we've even upgraded to the 4.5 beta hoping that it'd improve. But for what it is, it's a great bit of kit. -ken

OGC withdrawal of ITIL version2 OGC has considered these findings alongside its own requirements for the maintenance of the ITIL product set, and agreed that: a. Withdrawal will be product based, with all language variants for individual qualifications and publications being removed at the same time. b. Removal of version2 will complete on 30 June 2011. Specific product withdrawal will be as follows: - V2 Foundation to cease 30 June 2010 - V2 Manager to cease 31 August 2010 - V2 Practitioner to cease 31 Dec 2010 - Foundation Bridge to cease 31 Dec 2010 Read more about it here. So if you're considering doing ITIL 2, you've got to do it before the above dates. Otherwise it's version 3. -Ken

That's not too bad (unless they have changed their policy since I left - granted it was about 5 years ago when I did), IT Services has access to all the training material and Tresham will pay for any CPD that is required of you in order to do your job. -Ken

We use Panda Anti-Virus here and like it, because we bought the 3 year licence it was cheaper than Sophos (and at the time alot light than Sophos, I don't know about now) and alot cheaper than every other AV out there. -Ken

Hi Guys/Gals, Just got an e-mail from the NCC about applying to become a "Harnessing Technology Technical Champion". Sounds very interesting... Was wondering if anyone else was considering going for it, imo it's a very good stepping stone for the next level in our career (for example the "...to provide guidance for..." sounds like basic consultancy) as well as a big benefit for the school(s) you support. But of course the less people apply the greater the chances of me being accepted -Ken
