  1. You're not David Cameron in disguise are you? This sounds a lot like big society thinking Does anyone have good links with their local universities for placements / working along side them?
  2. Having recruited several times over the last few years it's becoming more of the norm to have a degree in a related subject (last techs job was over 60%). What stands out is the lack of experience applicants have. One thing you've missed out is the value of industrial placements while at university. Getting on a degree course that has proven success of finding students good placements is going to become more and more important. 12 months experience on you're CV and a good reference is a big plus. I think students need to be much more aware of what the university is going to give them, especially now they are going to be paying a lot of money to go there. A lot more could be done by schools to educate students about choosing the right university and course. My fear is students will look to the cheapest option - often without a placement - rather than the best. So what can we do for those that leave without experience? In most other areas of business and if you have the connections / money, intern-ships help get that foot in the door however I don't see these as the solution. Instead of a separate company or businesses being responsible for this, surely the best people are the universities - they've just taken thousands of pounds from the students, surely they should help them get a job / experience? Another option would have been for local authorities to run these sort of experience schemes (we had some FJF workers in our premises team from the authority). This though isn't going to be easy now schools are opting to become academies. From an employers point of view, I'd love some free / minimal cost extra help. The only thing holding me back is I fear the extra burden it will place on me dealing with the paper work and slowing me down having to teach them the role. I know this is short sighted of me as no doubt the right person could take on a fair bit of work and take some pressure off. Bit of a catch 22 - you need to put the effort in to cut the burden.
  3. We've had this request in the past and without the head making clear what they want it's going to be near on impossible to do. Is there another site they have seen that they want it to look like / have similar content to? Inevitably content is king, without the head telling you what they want on the site and telling the other staff they must get it to you, you're on a hiding to nothing. Maybe its time to get out the crystal ball..
  4. They are easily pleased
  5. Excellent work as ever Nick. Really looking forward to this release, sure the students and staff will love it too.
  6. How about: Absolutely Kelvin That's 0K with me

  8. We are just in the process of setting up something very similar - HP G7 + qnaps (iscsi) Are you using Hyper-V with cluster shared volumes? If so you'll need VSS + snapshots on you're hyper-v SAN to get good speed backups and no performance hit. info We've started with manually making disaster recovery copies of VMs, then using DPM to backup contents that can be restored into the VMs. Going to look at some method of backing up the VMs automatically - either DPM or hyperoo. VEEAM are set to release a hyper-v version in the near future too.
  9. It turned out the master boot record was fried. After finding a recommendation for r-studio on edugeek I downloaded that and proceeded with a recovery scan. 15 hours later and all the files were found and recoverable. Managed to get back everything Could have used backups for important stuff but had a couple of development servers that weren't being backed up.
  10. I'm now working on the assumption the data is still there but the boot sector has got mashed. Can anyone recomment some good server partition recovery software?
  11. We have a major issue with our failover cluster. One of the cluster shared volumes has stopped working. The shared volumes are all iSCSI from an HP MSA2312i, the volume in question was Volume 3 and connected to LUN4 While attempting to connect a new volume, it was noticed that there was an error with volume 3 - it was showing error 5120 (degraded) The volume was accessible and all the servers running from it were OK. I attempted to move the volume to another host to resolve the issue but this didn't help. So I took it offline and attempted to then bring it back online. This is where the problem started!!! The disk came back online but didn't have anything associated to it, say it needed an NTFS volume. Checking in disk management a dialogue box appeared (can't remember what is said, but I clicked OK) Now in disk management the drive is showing as unallocated space. I've checked on the SAN and there are no errors. If I right click on the drive in disk management I can only create a simple volume on the drive. Has the drive contents gone? Is there anyway I can recover it? Am I in for a mammoth restore session tomorrow? Any help is extremely welcome.

    batch file help

You planning the SIMS summer update too? Adding on to andy_b, I think this should work, checking if done already. IF EXIST \\SERVER\delivery$\2011\%computername%.txt GOTO dot4_end ELSE GOTO install_dot4 :install_dot4 \\SERVER\delivery$\2011\dotNetFx40.exe /q /norestart echo dotNetFx40.exe ran on %date% >\\SERVER\delivery$\2011\%computername%.txt :dot4_end
  13. Hi, I'm in the process of review similar stuff myself. For science, I'm looking at either a sharepoint calendar or sharepoint workflow. Or Room Booking System - Online Room Booking Software Repro - again sharepoint workflow might be an option Lettings - not sure of anything specific, but if you find something let me know Buildings Main. - We use Web Help Desk for IT tickets and are looking to roll that out for our premises team too.
  14. If you have more than 1 network you may need to enable one of them for cluster use: Enable a network for cluster use: Server Clusters (MSCS)

    OMR problem!

There should be text on the screen when its booting / running. Ours did this a couple of years ago and it needed a new main-board
  16. From the little bit I know about copiers (never seen a sharp though) it involves using an interposer I believe. This puts in a pre-printed or different colour sheet at the front / back.
  17. If you're using 2003R2 or higher you can use FSRM quotas Quota Management Setup a quota template on a folder and all first level subfolders created within it can be set to be given a set quota limit.
  18. AV updates / status if monitored centrally physically check all computers for damage / missing parts / unreported issues physically check servers / aircon / switches for warning lights + check temps + unusual noises server event logs server disk space stock levels (toners etc.) loan equipment check (all accounted for) meet with key staff to discuss any issues / developments (head of IT / line manager) review of previous weeks / months issues - any patterns? (easier if you have some help desk software) edusweep users folders to check for inappropriate files update website / intranet train staff assist in classrooms
  19. I've got 2 of these - one in my main PC and one in my media PC. Both work great, windows boots in a couple of seconds. The one in my main PC has been used for 10 months with never a hiccup. If I ever get the cash at work I'll buy the next batch of staff laptops with them in, it should minimize the "slow" boot issues.
  20. There isn't a direct migration between 2003 and 2008R2: Migrate Print Servers I'd do it by using Print Migrator to copy the config to a VM of 2003 server. Do an in place upgrade of VM to 2008 R2. Use Print Management to copy the config to the new 2008 R2 server. It might take you a little longer that manually adding the printers, but it'll give you some experience of backing up the 2008 R2 config.
  21. in your code where you have value="dvxflash window.swf" try using the full path value="http://www.dvxmarketing.com/dvxflash window.swf" there are 2 places its in the code. Whenever I'm embedding stuff I use: Embedded Media HTML Generator it makes all the coder for you
  22. A couple of other things to try - When experiencing issues, pull the plug on the upstairs switch - does this return the workstations downstairs to normal speed. This would narrow down issues to upstairs. Again when issues are happening, check you can ping the router. It may be this is rebooting (it could affect everyone, depending how DNS is setup on the server) Check on a workstation with problems if you can ping the server both by IP and dns. Try pinging other resources. Try accessing other shares too.
  23. Try another web browser, firefox perhaps.
  24. If you are using virtual servers, you can get a data center license for each host processor and have an unlimited number of VMs running on them (any version of server - std, ent, web, data) at no extra cost. So running 5 host servers (with dual physical processors) with server 10 VMs on each would just cost you 10 data center licenses.
