Has anyone got an Idiots guide for packaging and deploying Windows 7? I've got it sysprepped, but I dont know what to do with regards an answer file to auto join the domain etc. I've tried the windows 7 AIK but the documentation with it is very confusing. Any help much appreciated

Hello, Just trialing the Windows 7 RC, got it set up on our domain okay, but im having trouble with the start menu - its not there! We use Mandatory Profiles for the pupils but although the profile seems to load okay theres nothing in the start menu/programs - the same happens if I set up AD folder redirection for the start menu. Anyone got a solution / workaround? it doesnt matter if its machine specific rather than user specific, though obviously I dont want to have to modify the menus on the individual machines. Cheers

That sounds like one of the machines has simple file sharing enabled, and the other does not - check the settings on both - its under control panel -> folder options -> view -> use simple file sharing

theres no need to buy an ATI card - we have a six monitor setup here using Nvidia cards and the default windows desktop control panel applet to organise them.

check you have the most up to date firmware for the card, I had a similar problem with another Sil chipset where it wouldnt boot when drives were connected that I solved by updating the firmware.

I've got one of those in my home server, decent bit of kit for what it costs, plus if you visit the Silicon Image site and download the Raid5 firmware, you can upgrade it to support Raid 0,1,5 and 10 as well

Iain, might be worth looking at wigan and leigh college - Welcome To Wigan & Leigh College they do the 2003 MCSA and CCNA courses, as long as you dont mind spreading out the training over a few months one night a week.

I've found there are a few tactics that can be used to get 10 mins+ Basically do one of these 3 things 1. Camp near the Ammo. If Possible I always try to defend near to the ammo - it means you can use your primary weapon indiscriminatly and not have to worry too much about co-ordinated ammo runs, just turn round and grab some. Ditto rather than re-load you can just grab a fresh weapon from the table which massively increases your rate of fire. 2. Camp the Minigun. On maps with a minigun, one person uses it the others keep close and watch his back. A good minigunner can clear out masses of zombies, and put a serious ammount of Hurt on the Tanks. 3. Hide in a corner. If theres no Minigun and/or the ammo is in an exposed spot, the final tactic I have used is to find a good spot with your back to a wall - this can be anywhere on the map. Use pistols exclusively against the regular zombies, and try to save primary ammo for tanks. You may be able to make a few runs for ammo and med packs in the lulls (normally about 2-3 mins, 6mins and 9mins 30secs) of the 3 strategies number one is deffinatly my favourite, and I got over 20 mins with it on the Bridge. The other possibility with a dim projector, is that the whiteboard surface you are projecting onto is filthy. Have a look at the boards themselves and see if all they need is a good clean.

Could you not just use a custom MMC and Delegate AD permissions to these members of staff, to allow them to create users and reset passwords etc?

rename it from .man to .dat then open it up in registry editor, make the changes and save and change the name back to .man

We use windows fundamentals here on our oldest laptops, for Imaging I sysprep them and use norton ghost to copy the Image. Never tried WDS for WFLP though - maybe try using Free Ghost?

We have a HP core switch and tried unsuccessfully to use other brand GBICs (Netgears) had to give in and buy the Branded HP ones, they just arent compatable

Do you use mandatory or roaming profiles? we had a similar issue with our mandatory profiles, with the machines trying to connect to the home folder of the test user we created the profile on, rather than that of the logged on user. the fix was to load the ntuser.man (or .dat for roaming) into registry editor and search for all instances of \\server\pupils\genericuser and replace with H: (mapped to users home folder)

Are these Vista / 2008 Machines? We had something similar (cant remember the exact error code now) which was caused by corrupted downloads of the updates. I had to download the corrupted updates, unpack them and manually copy the files into the windows\serviceing\packages directory to fix it.

I would say, before you buy a new system check your existing one is setup correctly. We use the Netgear Managed solution and run 6 Class Sets of 20 Laptops, sometimes with sets in adjacent classrooms and very rarely have any issues (we've had a couple of AP's not responding in the last 6 months, that needed resetting)

With Dell machines (certainly the ones we have) if any Drive interfaces are enabled, but do not have drives connected the machine thinks something is wrong and waits for an F1 to continue. Try going into the BIOS and turning off all the Drives/Controllers that do not have a device connected (i.e. everything except the CD-ROM and HDD)

I can personally recommend the Netgear Solution, we have 3x controllers and 42 APs set up and once it was configured initially it just works, the only time we have issues is if we are multicasting ghost images across the network. The complete set up, including controllers, APs and PoE switches cost us something in the region of 12-15K (we bought stuff in batches so I cant remember all the costs involved) A maxed out setup of the Netgear stuff (max of 3 controllers and 16 APs per controller (48 Total) should allow you to put 3 in each classroom, giving a max of 45 wireless devices per room (roughly) As Contink said if you go for the dual band APs (A/G band) and dual band laptops the controller will distribute them intelligently and give you more bandwith.

well not applicable means it isnt needed on that station i.e. x64 updates on x86 systems, or vista updates on xp. are you sure the .net 3 version you approved was for the relevant workstation type?

Cant help you with the exchange bit, but for Active Directory, you may be better doing a System state backup to the machine, and creating a Domain controller from the backup if neccessary, otherwise you will get machines authenticating against your emergency server even if the other DC's are still alive.

When do you guys play? I've been trying to do the campaigns on expert for a while, but Always the group on pubs breaks down and end up being left with the bots, or the server crashes
