We use 2x here, along with 2 windows 2003 Terminal Servers, one for the library (10 Clients) and one for the Staff room (4 Clients) It has worked very well and no real issues since I set it up, the only Pain is it doesnt work with 2008 Terminal Services once the terminal server is licenced (it works before it is licenced but I dont know why)

We use External 1TB Hard Drives, backing up over USB. It does 360GB in 11 Hours for a full backup once a week, and then we use differentials for the rest of the week. The drive is then swapped out and taken offsite and another put in its place for the following week.

Hello all, Having a bit of a problem with our Mandatory profiles and was hoping someone might know of a solution (or at least have a different name for the problem) All our pupils logon with mandatory profiles and there is a seperate profile for each year group (though all use the same base profile with different start menu items), I created a new profile this summer with new software etc set up. this tested fine and went live in september. After it came into general useage we noticed a problem with re-direction of my documents for some users - apparantly at random some pupils will get an error of "cannot connect to \\file-server\pupils\testpupil check security permissions" testpupil being the user I set up the profile with. I have tried running Delprof and clearing out user profiles from C:\Documents and settings, but the error persists. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Installing Linux OS on Virtual PC2007
Chris_Jones replied to mickeyh080's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
The Virtual PC problem is to do with colour depth - Linux (or certainly Ubuntu) by default wants to use a 24Bit colour depth and this isnt supported by Virtual PC. You have to boot into the console and manually change the bit depth to 16 Bit, Though I cant remember exactly how you do this. -
Managed Wireless - what have you got and what did it cost?
Chris_Jones replied to pete's topic in Wireless Networks
We have also gone for the Netgear WFS709TP with 3x controllers and 45 APs covering the entire site which we installed and setup ourselves, total cost was about £7K It has worked very well since it went in and happily supports 2 class sets of 20 laptops, plus 3 more sets of 16 and misc staff laptops about the building. The only issue that cropped up was with Ghost and multicasting that caused problems. -
Hello, Im currently setting up a 2008 Terminal Services Server for our staff, and im trying to use re-directed desktop and start menu folders. I've setup the re-direction in group policy in user policies->Windows Settings->Folder Redirection. However when I log in as a staff member the re-diecrted folders arent used - I just get the defaults. Also I cannot edit the default and all users folders, I keep getting access is denied even as domain admin or after I take control of these folders. Anyone else set this up, or have any useful advice?

Have you installed the motherboard/chipset drivers? sometimes these need installing before the Audio device is recognised.
-
Same here - I've set up MS Virtual PC on one machine in each IT room and installed a basic copy of windows that auto logs in as admin, set the vhd to read only and enabled undo disks so that any changes they make can be erased.

sounds like its either the power supply then, or the network cable - try changeing the PSU, and directly connecting to the camera with a laptop or such like.
-
is it a Power over Ethernet camera, or does it use a seperate Power Supply? with PoE I've found it can be very finicky about working if there is the slightest problem with the cable - even if other devices work okay. In summary - try re-patching the cable

Allow staff to unlock workstations logged in as a student
Chris_Jones replied to FN-GM's topic in Windows
What about a script using the shutdown command? you could place a batch file on the teachers desktops that asks for the computer name then inserts it into a script like this shutdown /r /f /m \\%COMPUTERNAME% /t 0 which would force a logoff and restart of the machine (its not possible to just logoff the machines remotely for some reason) -

I may be interested in going to this, Just need to confirm with my boss. What time approximatly does it go on till? -
If you have spanning Tree enabled this can prevent PXE booting, because the time it takes to sort the spanning tree is greater than the timeout on the pxe. We had to use the fast link option on our netgears where we are using pxe booting.

We have a DIY Thin client setup here, using 2X thinclient software running 12 machines in the Library which are old workstations I have converted. works very well and its quicker than a quick thing.

Stand-alone XP desktop won't allow access to logical disk manager?
Chris_Jones replied to Deaks's topic in Windows
Is the Logical Disk Manager service running? -
This sounds a bit like an Issue we have had, which seemed to be related to printer drivers. The fix we use is to stop the print spooler service and empty the windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS folder then re-start the spooler.
-
We are currently implementing this on our network with 3 of these switches and 40 APs. This is essentially re-badged Aruba kit and is full of features, though the documentation for the more advanced functions seem lacking.

Hello all, Our School recently purchased NetSupport School after trialing it, however upon rolling the client out to the Technology department we've hit a major snag - namely that any PC with the client on cannot run Solidworks. I have contacted the Netsupport Tech support and they are looking into the problem, but I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue and if so how they solved it.
