This is true of any TV show based on a game or a book, I guess. More so for games - you have a certain amount of 'headcannon' for things you read or see described in the Game. You have a certain way your Sole Survivor or Lone Wanderer will behave that feel 'right' to you and the moment the character on the TV does something different it breaks the spell a bit. I think this was true of the original Reacher films with Tom Cruise as Reacher - he looked nothing like how the character was described in the books and this broke the spell for so many fans. One way or another, I'm looking forward to finding out about this one.

Governance is a key issue as Tony points out. If you are an O365 school, I'd be looking at Sharepoint for this. Sharepoint online can very easily be structured to allow good use of metadata to retrieve all relevant docs and takes care of storing the data redundantly and is enough of a 'defacto standard' these days for storing documents not to be considered an odd choice. Not sure if there's something similar in the Google world but if there is I'd look at that if you are a google shop. Your biggest issue may be figuring out what metadata to store for each document and how to create that metadata efficiently. Other questions to ask yourself: How will new documents be added? How will old documents be used? How would you deal with a FOI or Data Protection request or similar and feel confident you'd retrieved all the docs necessary to comply?

Couldn't agree more. This local login process seems overly complex, unnecessary and quite horrifying really. Deploy with SCCM or Autopilot, use Known Folder Redirect if you like storing data in O365 or always on VPN if you prefer, job done.

You can achieve that by just joining them to the WiFi and then going for coffee because you've completed what you wanted to do.

My old college has moved its file shares into the cloud, but not necessarily all to servers. My current employer has over 1000 servers in the cloud along with scores of cloud services and we don’t have issues. Two or three things matter here. You need fast, redundant internet connections to site to make this viable, you need to be mindful of bottlenecks and plan around them (e.g. think if alternatives if you still use legacy roaming profiles rather than trying to make those work on this) and you need to think in terms of services rather than servers to get value from a cloud migration. For example, Azure Files may do what you need and is likely to be a better choice vs migrating a file server to the cloud, in the same way that Exchange Online, part of the O365 platform you mentioned, is probably a better idea for most people than running your own exchange servers in Azure.

You might start by finding out what and how the teacher of the future will be teaching students of the future in this classroom of the future. I know that sounds like I'm being snarky and maybe I am a little but you can't design a solution until the problem it is trying to solve has been properly defined - and it's the teaching staff who need to be involved with that.

It’s not enough to be Innovative, you have to tie in to the strategic goals of the school. What does the school want? What is the demographic aspect of your catchment area looking like (as this will affect future planning - if no one knows then congratulations you’ve just found and innovative use for data to predict future enrolment). What direction has it been following for developing Teaching and Learning and what innovations will improve that?

It was great. My OH enjoyed it greatly too and she’s not normally into action movies. Soundtrack is definitely as good as the first movie.

Had to help my elderly in-laws switch to BT Digital Voice earlier this year and to be honest their system and their guides for that are completly unhelpful. I've had surgery that was more enjoyable than dealing with BT. In fact, during the same time frame I've set up a global VOIP system integrated into Teams for all our offices and the exasperation generated by dealing with BT for one house was only slightly less than that generated by the foilbles of a global VOIP project at work.

If you’re looking for improvements, I’d be asking of each thing in your list, “what does it improve?”. How will these ideas make the place safer, or improve the delivery of teaching? So why the drone thing? Why the Muzak? Unless the objective here is to prevent loitering? Why the backlighting of displays? Better cameras for people who video conference all day is a winner, as is finishing the cabling into trunking. Plug covers? Maybe in visitor areas I guess but just how offensive is a plug in an office really?

Surprised this is even a source of debate in 2022. When I joined my college employer in 1998 they were using a code based on the asset tag, and we were using a homebrew database to track location and history for each device and to sign out/loan portable devices to individuals. The current user, current location, year of purchase - these all belong in the CMDB now we're in 2022 and I don't see the point of duplicating them in the host name. I truly cannot doing it any other way these days - I'd seriously lose my mind the first time a laptop named "joe-laptop" came in to the IT office in Fred's hands because we took it back from Joe and re-issued it 2 years ago.

I'd agree with the toolsets suggested but I would suggest changiung yours/ your user's perspective. The current situation is normal in university provision, so rather than expecting each school/department to bend to your whims on device managment, I would suggest focus on securing access to information and services, which you can absolutely do with the Office 365/Intune tooling suggested already. So - you don't care what version of windows, MacOS or Linux they run, just that it's a currently supported version. You don't care what their access requirements are to local applications within each department/school, but you require MFA and an intune enrolled device for central services. You provide a SLA - but it's contingent on them meeting certain requirements. -- that kind of thing. You can offer additional opt in services for patching, device support beyond the minimum necessary to connect to your central services, etc. and in my past experience people often opted into these rather than deal with minutiae themselves, but it may well be that a few departments or individual projects have their own requirements that you can't reasonably support centrally without twisting your team and your rules into pretzels - so don't.

All based on observations from my education job and the facilities we had then: Will customers be coming to your office? If so, think about how you might want to provide service without necessarily having people wander all over your office. A counter at the front, or a separate service desk space for example. Will you be handing out (or frequently must dash out with) consumables or parts like Mice? Have them stored where it's convenient to grab 'n go. However much power and network connectivity you think you need... get that plus a little extra. Space for all your team (whether that's just you, or you plus...) to have a proper desk where you can sit and do work you need to concentrate on without being surrounded by junk. Good quality chair at each desk and two monitors per desk as standard, along with decent quality mouse and keyboard. As IT people you spend a disproportionate amount of your time sitting at your desk typing away than the average person and a decent workspace is vital for both productivity and health In fact, have a separate bench for builds/repairs rather than having this encroach on your desk. If we're really going for it - raised floor with elecktrak power and (i forget the name for them) flood wiring network boxes. These allow the power and network in the room to be moved when needed, with grommits in the flooring.

Sounds to me like switches not passing on discovery packets tbh. Are ports switch ports being marked as inactive when a device is idle for too long.

We've done this recently and I've been pleased with the results so far. The mileage on our hybrid is fantastic and (I suspect) driving this has made us more mindful of how to drive efficiently which probably has helped the mileage on our second car, which is a 2019 "city car" improve too. Only bad thing has been having to get used to driving an automatic when in the hybrid and then have to transition back to manual when driving the city car. This has been a struggle for me as I tend to do the longer drives in our hybrid but drive the city car more frequently...

Keep in mind that this will show when it was delivered to their exchange online mailbox. Unless they’re using OWA, Client issues may cause them to genuinely not see the message in their local inbox until later.

I agree but I think even this misses the point somewhat: If we're talking 'cloud native' we need to be talking about SaaS. An AWS or Azure SQL DBaaS application is likely to be cheaper, more available and easier to manage again than a highly available SQL solution built around Linux VMs in the cloud. We know that Exchange Online is cheaper than the equvilent Exchange environment built in the cloud (or on-prem imo) because it's SaaS rather than IaaS. Same applies to Google Mail vs. hosting a Linux email server in the cloud. All of this only becomes more intensive when you consider that as we move up the stack we're saving money on resources at every level.

Are you sure that a geographically dispersed line to a different point of presence is possible in your location? It’s arguably the main benefit of a separate line from another provider.

Well they’re 8 years old at this point as a design. What Android tablet is still supported/has aged as well? The Samsung tablet you mentioned is the same price as the new iPad Air on John Lewis, and based on the track record of Samsung tablets vs Apple tablets I know which one I think will be useful and supported for longer.

Microsoft and Amazon both allow you to specify what is hosted where, and will have pretty good privacy statements for all locations (of course, it’s still up to you to ensure that a geolocation meets your requirements). Microsoft are the one I’m most familiar with and, for an example of their flexibility, will allow you to have user accounts in the same O365 tenant that are homed in different locations, so you can have a home tenant in Europe that includes Australian accounts/mailboxes stored in Australian O365 servers, Brazilian sharepoint sites hosted in South America, etc.

Not necessarily. If it required another server, or server licence for a virtual instance, or if they subsequently needed tablets so they could update jobs on-the-go, which budget would they come out of? And they might not charge directly for the electricity but it does obviously come out of your school’s operating budget, reducing the amount available to allocate to you and other departments…
