Aye, only real way of getting that kind of setup is using multiple ports on the router, else you'll always have a single failure point (Unless you go down the entire backup internet line route) When you say it's only got 1 port, but a built in 4 port, do you mean it's only got 1 external (To the grid/internet etc?) If you got a 4 port internally you should be able to team with those and split it across your core as you say, and then just put that straight across your current 2 without using a new switch Steve

How redundant do you want it in terms of time/downtime? I mean easiest option would just be configure one port on each switch for the Router, but just unplug it and move it across to the other one if the switch wobbles? Obviously not automatic, but assuming the issue is during on-site time, it's a second fix as it's already setup to go etc In your example as you say it's just moving the issue down the line, if "new switch" breaks you have the exact same issue (I mean I assume from your comments you only have a single port from said router? After reading that thread I wouldn't say people (or at least many, I think unix mentioned no phone) don't have smartphones, but that when they don't have signal/battery etc you need something to rely on? Unless I've missed some posts in my reading!? But in terms of actual day to day use, most things you use a smartphone on could be done on an alternative device or once home etc. It's just down to whether you're happy carrying things about (Take proper DSLR etc), or don't feel the need to have things like music/social media with you all day Steve

I guess it normally depends on how quick you need it to be done. Generally I always prefer to play with (aka install) the kit myself, as then I know exactly what's setup, where and if it goes wrong who's at fault (Edit - When I first started in my last place, they just had a new server setup done by external company, and ran into problems day 1 of me working there, so having to backtrack over the work and see what they setup was a pain to find the problem to then fix it!) But to give you an example, over Easter last year we had our entire switching estate replaced over Easter and got the company to do the migration, not because I couldn't, but because the lack of time to do all the other jobs at once If you have time, and can run things side-by-side, what's the harm in installing it, moving a few VMs across and seeing how they go? Seems a large waste of money for something that can be done with a webcam and cloud service (google/o365)? End of day the camera should be on the staff/projecting screen, not moving around to other students etc. What do you hope to solve by using a robot over those? Steve

That's pedantic rather than legislation though. You aren't treating staff differently if you're providing them equipment to do the work on site during the contracted hours, which is following the legalisation And even in the case you're saying, you'd end up with the situation that if a job-share wanted to use it at a weekend they'd get it for 1 day each as it's shared, and would need to return it to work. Or then you're going to have to split the weekends between both members of the job share. Which side are you saying it showing the dot on? As in is it on the Windows connecting to the mac? or on the actual mac once you connect with windows?
