Just on that point, I’m pretty such that’s not true and schools are free to choose whatever payroll service they want. On a wider point it’s worth checking out where you stand with this kind of thing as you need to know what services the school is buying into by choice. Of course the LA is not going to correct any misconceptions about what schools think that they are obliged to use [emoji6]

Yep opted out years ago and was a great decision. If your LA is anything like ours you will be fed horror stories about life outside the LA provision: the LA portal won’t work, secure transfer will stop, you need to sign this scary document that transfers liability for all the horrible things that are going to happen the minute you leave.... and it’s mostly all fluff. Draw up a list of everything you get from the LA and compare to other options. Get some straight answers about LA services that might be affected (in our case, despite the dire warnings, the sky didn’t fall in)

We don't deploy Java anymore but when we did I created a new package for each update. I never really found a decent solution for updating that didn't involve a third party patch manager.

I use queries to make collections then then create collections containing those colllections. So for example, I might have a computer suite with machines called ‘Suite-01’, ‘Suite-02’ etc and classroom pcs called ‘Class-01’, ‘Class-02’ etc. First I make a collection called ‘suite’ populated by a query that finds machines with a name like ‘suite’. Then I make a collection named ‘classes’ populated by a query finding machines with a name like ‘class’. I then create an ‘all PCs’ collection that contains both the ‘suite’ and ‘class’ collections. So, now if I want to deploy software to just the suite I deploy it to the ‘suite’ collection; for the classes I deploy to the ‘class’ collection; if I want all machines to get the software I deploy to the ‘all pcs’ group. I use this to build up quite a complex structure so I have a collection for each eventuality. Of course if you select to update the collection on a schedule or evaluate new resources it’s all dynamic and new pcs are put in the right collections automatically. Oh and sccm is awesome if you are prepared to put the work in [emoji3]

Desktops. Worked in a school with laptops and it was such a PITA they quickly ditched it and went back to desktops. I think that the teaching station should be available to use by anyone walking in the room.

Yeah I do them myself. To be honest it took me a while to get the hang of due to the ribbons breaking so easily. I still find that bit tricky. Get a good kit with the right tools and take your time, I mean really take your time to make sure that the your aren't stressing any bits and you'll be fine.

Local profile is a must these days I think. There are lots of bits of win 10 that MS state don't support roaming profiles any more (eg the Start Menu customisation).

Perhaps we are lucky but we’ve not had such a bad experience. With the exception of fiddling about with the start menu win 10 has been pretty good for us. You do need to rethink how you approach windows though, you can’t just upgrade from a previous version and expect everything to work as before.

Me too, I just picked up an SE for a decent price and its a cracking phone. Its replacing my 5s that I bought cheap as well. After years of being an Android advocate I switched to Apple and I love iOS. I'd never pay full whack for a new iPhone but getting an older model is a pretty good strategy I think.
