I do, any idea where to go?

Hi All, Looking for some advice, my admissions officer came across a fake student that someone had (probably by accident) entered into sims. Now my problem is finding out who did it, I have an admission date from 2 days ago which is likely when this fake student was put on and as it was a name begining with A it was at the top of the student list so was quite easy to spot (especially when the name was all in caps). I have had a quick look through sims and cannot find any details logs, we run impero but that doesn't pick this type of thing up. Is there anywhere I can look to see who created this student? The student has now been deleted. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Yes, POE works fine. VLAN works fine. We use a bit of software called Blue Iris with a big 16TB NAS supporting 25 ip cameras 3 HD and 1 PTZ Dome. At 6FPS you can keep recordings for 3 months at this setup on continuous recording. We used to use Dedicated Micros recorders and they kept crashing the NIC on vlans and then crashing the whole unit.

I am Network Manager and I am in charge of all data and services and therefore to do my job have full permissions to everything. You could (not saying you should) reset the sysman password using the SQL password so you can get in as system manager and give yourself full permissions.

This is down to class room management and punishment. If a student has lost work it is obviously deleted and they should be punished, if they say it was someone else then that person should be punished etc until it stops happening. This is down to the teacher of that lesson. We have a continuous backup running so we can restore any items that were ever in the users folder from the start of the academic year. We also have impero running so we can see when items have been deleted and from there prove when and where it was deleted. Your system doesn't just loose stuff, if staff believe that then this is bad PR and makes you look bad, I would recommend talking to your line manager about clearing this up if it is the case. Staff should always be trusted over a student in these cases otherwise it is undermining you and your department.

I don't know of a way of doing this however from what dkeen94 said, you will need to make sure it is in your AUP/ICT Policies saying it is being monitored, why and to what effect as per DPA. You can say that as it is a school system you reserve the right to look into email accounts and check for issues relating to safeguarding from the designated officer for CP.

We also have offline sync, newer staff laptops have a SSD with enough space to sync 60gb offline, however some staff do tend to log into someone elses which causes issues, I just remind them of our laptop loan agreement and staff IT policies which prohibits this and remove the additional user profile. If staff need more space we give them a bigger SSD, nice and fast, no issues with syncing.

As @vikpaw said fire reports should be printed off in the morning after the first full register list is in, if there was a fire in the server room or in one of the network areas you may not have a network to print the fire report! I have seen reports from a couple of school fires where it has taken down the IT infrastructure but these schools did have fire reports printed out as it is standard practice. It is worth checking your disaster recovery plan as most schools I speak to have a plan to get a MIS server running from backups on the opposite side of the site to access critical data such as student information in the event the server room is destroyed.

We limit staff to 40gb standard and we have two staff over that. Students are limited 100mb, 500mb, 1gb, 2gb, 5gb, 10gb. In 7,8,9,10,11,12/13. Some of our students have 80gb due to taking media courses. We currently hold around 3.8TB of documents. We also have shared resources at about 80gb for students to access from staff and 40gb on a staff resource share. Our admin staff have various shared drives which build up to around 200gb. We also have scanned documents (student/staff files) at about 50gb. So far we are ok on storage but we have seen a dramatic increase in documents over the years due to media courses. We keep leavers documents for 7 years on backup devices, each "leaving year" which includes any leaving staff or student plus Year 11 inclusive (even if returning to sixth form) and Year 13 (even if retaking) comes to about 1.8TB. We have a 16TB SAN and two 8TB backup NAS devices in separate locations in secure areas of the school to backup all data to. If you wanted to know about email, our students are all limited to 50mb, they have means of accessing data other ways than emailing it. Staff have 1gb standard although some staff such as BM and me have 10gb or may exceed this in some cases. This is due to the need to keep all emails for purposes of proof and evidence. The whole email server uses around 300gb. (960 students, 150 staff ish). Hope this helps.

Hi all, I got asked a while ago to look into some sort of lost property online listing. A local school uses Moodle and justs lists their lost property on there. We have a Joomla site but I can't find any extensions, I have an in house IIS server with public access so looking for maybe a open source portal solution to shove on there. Basically I want something that we can individually list lost property with a photo, be able to search based on type, date found and colour etc... and for our admin team to be able to update easily. Has anyone done or used anything like this? Thanks for any advise, Tom

Current year pulls in 2014/15 academic year. Therefore you get this years data. You can pull in last years data too so you can report on it, you should only need to do it once as that should now not change. The current years data I think needs transferring every so often as data is then not up to date? We don't really use discover except when SLT want reports in a "readable" format ie colorful charts.

Launch Sims Discover Administration Utility. Click Managing Data Transfers on left side. Then Create Data Transfer and click current year (or along those lines). Once done that go to View Transfers and should see it happening. I think this is what you are trying to do? Tom

Hi all, I am feeling happy, I have been offered Network & Systems Manager after interview at my current workplace. I am happy that my employer can see that I am capable of taking this role. I have been a (senior) technician up to now and feel glad I came out on top of some other candidates that have already been in a Manager position. Now to finish off all the summer work and do a hand over.

We used to give out good Dell laptops with 3yr NBD. But staff never look after them. We have decided to buy cheaper HP laptops (I3, 4gb) and then buy 120GB SSD with some of the savings. This makes the laptops faster and the money we save we can replace them either sooner or buy spares.

The cert needs to have auto discover.domain.com as well (at least that's what I have) Also ports 6002 seem to ring a bell... Maybe google that. Also you need to enable it in exchange... ActiveSync under client access and on each user should be enabled is activesync under the tab called features or something. (Sorry would be more precise if I was looking at my exchange). If the above doesn't help I think I saw a guide when I was setting mine up, will try dig it out. What version of exchange are you running. Also ios6 broke ours so we have had to ban ios6. It kept crashing the info store.

Apparently (although I am with EE and wasn't effected) there was no signal with EE yesterday. Maybe they broke something, I remember about 3 years ago they broke their network so no one could get 3G Internet (orange)

As the new pxe boot then chains off to ipxe we tried specifying the other file (think it was default.ipxe) as a differnt class on the dhcp server. I unfortunately had to restore a snapshot of my fog server and downgrade my nodes as 85% of our devices either wouldn't get ipxe or just rebooted all the time at ipxe. Real let down but if it works...

Just wondering how people spend there weekend? Usually I would be doing anything but IT for at least one day Today I have decided I am actually going to update my Exchange server (hosted dedicated server hosting a few domains for my friends and family), after updating the one at school a few months back I have come to the conclusion that my own server running Exchange 2010 SP1 needs to be updated to SP3 Roll up 5. I am not sure if you can just do SP2, SP3 roll ups, but I am doing each roll up itself before the SP and then again all the roll ups etc... So downloading was nice and fast just the installing is taking all day The unfortunate thing is I just saw the sun come out, I eventually decided I would go out into the garden and the sun went away again so am back inside staring at the loading bar again. However I am finding some cool stuff on edugeek to do at work that I may look at next week So what have you guys/girls been up to/got planned for the rest of this weekend?

I have over the past year been working on a automated user management system in powershell/mysql/php that will run through pull everyone out of sims cross reference my aum database and then create accounts were required, profiles, documents, email, move users up a year in ad (ou) and file server folders and mail lists etc... this is then accessible through a web interface for my department to pull up login details. I also have a letter made so that we can just give it to new users with their login details and where everything is so we don't have to talk too much *timesaver*. No matter what you try to do with your script/program there is always more to improve and never enough time. It is nice when things work and it saves not only you but your colleagues time. If you want to do a gui interface then what I have done is probably not for you but if you want a backend task that works wonders I would go powershell all the way, quest ad powershell commandlets allow you to do more easily too. Many people have posted there scripts and such around the web (powergui) for example to get you started you can get a posted script and work it through to see how it works (commands and such). Before I start doing anything big I always draw it out on paper so I can plan each stage (you can't create a users home folder and give them ownership if the user doesn't exist yet, and you cant give a user a home folder if the homefolder doesn't exist as we use username$ for our homedrives). Hopefully some of the above will help, if you get stuck there is always someone that can help.
