  1. We have the following attached to the bottom of each email "School name respects the work life balance of its staff. If this email has been sent out of normal working hours, there is no expectation for you to provide an immediate response."
  2. This is why I don't plug users USB sticks into my pc. Glad your software dealt with it though.
  3. Or just delete the video and tell the user how to shoot video the proper way
  4. We had to do this, didn't take long. Just sent them a copy of an invoice for our phone line as the number appears on our website. And a link to the dfe page for the school. They phoned me as well.
  5. SPC collect free, provide a detailed inventory and a report of data destruction/hard drive shredding.
  6. We have to create pre admission accounts because they want the student to use the computers before they start (on a transition day) so couldn't use admission numbers as they don't yet get assigned.
  7. Same. Our staff have laptops and under their loan agreement they are expected to pay (under certain circumstances) towards a replacement should they damage or it get stolen. If it is a break in to the school there would be sufficient theft value to cover any excess.
  8. Staff is first initial dot surname. J.bloggs Students are first four digits of surname first initial then 3 numbers. Blogj001 and it counts upwards for new users with same names. Display name is first name last name then username. Office field has their year group. OU for each year group and security/dist groups. We also put all student photos into AD so staff can distinguish between for emails, students use gmail so don't see photos.
  9. We also didn't sign out radios. However we provided training to staff on "how to turn the volume knob to a suitable level" and "how to press the ptt key" because everyone is scared of technology apparently. The main issue for us initially was users immediately starting their message and not performing a challenge/response. I.e. They were: Reception can you give forkies assistant call. Instead of: Reception this is forkies... forkies reception go ahead. The first would result in either nothing happening or a whole bunch of people calling over the radio "where you calling me?". Also a note, unless you have digital radios with encryption then you should not allow your staff to communicate any information that may fall under DPA on the radio as it would be a breach, as the frequencies are public.
  10. During a lockdown you shouldn't need to take a register, only when you have been evacuated by emergency services during a real event. During a lockdown staff and their class are still in danger, immediately after the register has been completed until it is either all clear or you have been evacuated. During an evacuation for a fire alarm, you take a register to find out who is missing. However the fire services don't care about registers, they want to know if the buildings have been swept and clear. The registers are for after the emergency to identify missing persons.
  11. Unfortunately no. Just wondering what type of mess is the projector in for you to require it to be sent off site?
  12. I was experiencing some slowness today while looking at a member of staffs laptop and on my computer clicking on links through Outlook which then did the dots going across the screen loading before eventually going to the website. Same as you all Speedtest's and dns lookups seem fine. I was in meetings all the rest of the day so not sure if still happening. Is yours still an issue?
  13. My guess would be an old style drinks stir with the metal end to replicate ice. I.e. You put the thing in the case in the freezer and then you can pop the metal end in your drink without getting it watery.
  14. We are using 2 x 3000XL, one with additional battery pack and then a APC 2200 as well. This runs our server room for about 2.5-3 hours. Then the servers auto shut down and just the phone system stays up (for emergency phones) for another hour or so. We have 6 dell poweredge servers, san, kvm, 48 port hp switch, 3 x 24 port switches and a 24 port Poe switch, voip phonesystem, cctv server, BT nte, smoothwall and a few other bits in the two cabs. We keep a record of e batteries and unit install dates and they are on a rolling cycle so we replace a few batteries every year and a unit every two years.
  15. I believe there is a round robin plugin for spiceworks. https://community.spiceworks.com/appcenter/app/plugin_1713
  16. We run all copper networking ourselves, we have been on a lot of courses run by our LA which are all health and safety related courses. We have some testing equipment to certify all installs. I have had quotes this year for cabling installs (we no longer have time for various reasons) and the quotations are costly, the only way to afford it is to have lots of points installed at once cutting the labour cost. The issue for us, is we end up spending most of the time with the engineers showing them where to run the cabling and checking in, so again costing more man hours. Definitely recommend getting your team running cables for saving costs! Here are some of the courses I can think of: Asbestos awareness (if pre 2000) Health and safety building regulations course Building fire safety course (if separate to above) Working at heights training Mobile access tower training First aid training (never know especially in holidays) As the employer, you also need to do risk assessment and method statements for all the works, I recommend putting together a folder with everything you can think of for cabling and such, so it is all together and reference these when doing installs. Be sure they know how to identify electrics and isolate them. As said above, insurance, but depending on your building it is less likely to end up drilling through pipes if they are exposed rather than in walls. But your building insurance should cover any works you carry out, check with your business manager. Finally, inevitably your team is going to mess up somewhere and make a horrible mess drilling through a wall, so some basic diy repair training to make the finish good.
  17. Seems they are having issues regularly. They had their new check in system fail in September 2016 and I am sure something else went wrong months before that. Not good at all.
  18. We have disabled smb1 and apart from network browsing which we don't use anyway, the copiers use Papercut scanning which still works, and nothing else seems to be not working (fingers crossed). So as long as you can live without network browsing (and have papercut for scanning) seems ok?
  19. We moved from 20mb LA to a 100mb leased line... now we had to go up to 300mb leased line as we were hitting 90mb during day. Our current usage peaks around 180mb during the day. We use a lot of online resources and have various classes that upload large video files and such during the day hence the need for upload speed to match the download. Opening up BYOD to sixth form has their cap of 50mb hitting peaks too so might have to raise theirs soon. Depends on whether you are going to use more online heavy resources, as others have said FTTC is good as long as you don't need high upload speeds.
  20. We have a relatively simple naming convention: Physical servers: VM1, VM2 etc Virtual: VSDC1, VSAPPS, VSPRINT, etc Laptops for teacher: LFT-JDOE, etc Laptop for departments: LFD-TECH01, etc Laptop for students: LFS-JDOE (or LFS-SEN01) Desktop staff: ADM-JDOE (or ADM-RECEP01) or ICT1-00 Desktop for student: ICT1-01, ICT1-02 Tablet for departments: TFD-ENG01 Basically if the device is for a specific user, it is named for them, otherwise the location. Then it is cleaned and imaged for the replacement staff as then it is 100% default. Works well here and my technicians pick it up easy when they start, also easy for name selection in other software when stored across various ou's.
  21. Initial reports I saw said Telefonica was the first reported hit (can't find the sources now to link this) but it stated they run network equipment across Spain and some core NHS equipment. So I would assume if they got infected first, it could have spread on their infrastructure level to their customers? Apparently companies in Spain where hit the most to start with. Again I cannot remember where I saw this.
  22. The original poster called them a lecturer which make me believe they are a university. Also all school academies are businesses which makes there networks "business networks" or as everyone I know call them "corporate networks". Either way you don't go to a job and say, I won't use any of your equipment. You adapt.
  23. Corporate network is for corporate devices. If he doesn't like using the corporate devices he can work for another corporation.
  24. https://www.laptopscreen.co.uk is someone I use when we need a replacement screen quickly (luckily we don't need them often!)
