The latter part, once they are removed from the licensing it will go into limp mode fairly quickly, we have O365 in parts of our office and its quite clear on the install that you need a valid license and it checks regularly (30 days I think comes to mind) to check you still have a license in the portal and no license = limp mode.

How is that a let down? For a few hours of work to setup O365 on a simple and basic level you can offer all your students free licenses for use at home for Office 365 which they can download and run on home computers as long as they are a student at your school. You just need to ask your reseller to license you for X number of the student licenses at $0 once they come out sounds a brilliant deal and just what was missing to me after the removal of cheap MS Office software. Internally you do as you please and choose and it doesn't change anything you are doing currently so you keep your EES sub with MS Office, Windows, Exchange, SCCM etc.... I don't see the problem other than avoiding doing some prep and setup work as a one off. Its not like you will be using it internally so it shouldn't be seen as a problem if anything I'd say its preventing access to good software for free to enable the students to continue learning and using outside of the classroom. That is all unless I have mis-understood what @jamesbmarshall has put?

I have used Surfcontrol, Websense and Smoothie (and been a Smoothie user for eeerr too many years now!) and it is the simplest filter of them all, Youtube Education is a couple of rules, well documented I will add, and a line of code from YouTube so you don't get much simpler than that really. It also gives you the flexibility and power to do it exactly how you want. IF you feel that way tell them its too complex @tom_newton and team love feedback so tell them why you think its too complex and where the 1000+ options are and how you would improve it, it won't get better if you don't tell them

Simplicity of the product, the fact they listen to customers for feedback and integrate that into the product (a number of features tucked away in it are "John features / Ideas"), they know education a good number of staff have been in our seats and involved in our jobs so they know what its like having the SLT breathing down your neck which is a plus and its just so flexible and configurable that I couldn't fault it. It literally was plug in, basic config in, change proxy to it and off we go The OOB policies, albeit a bit harsh at times, are good and you can sleep a bit easier. They also are quick to add new content which is a plus you also have the comfort in known that a good number of Countys use it so must be something good about it as they don't buy into these things quickly and easily! They are also a UK company and UK based which I always liked Unlike many others who have no real UK base or have a support office for a US firm and thus lack that core UK understanding Smoothwall have that with here being the home and founding spot Oh and its a Yorkshire company

So you have full access to your DNS records for it via Heart Internet and know what they all are and nothing is point to LLNs systems / you know what they all are? If so I'd suspect that LLN are doing some DNS spoofing internally at LLN to reduce traffic going out of the WAN and back in again, for example within the WAN it may bring your IP to an internal IP rather than your external one to save out and in when you were part of LLN which they need to remove so it has to go out to resolve. A way to tell ask a fellow school who is on LLN still to do lookups for your stuff in DNS from an LLN connection and you do the same from a non LLN connection see what you get. For example do an MX lookup on your domain school.leeds.sch.uk see if that brings any clues in. That is how we spotted issues with our connections in Yorkshire a good time ago and pointed it out to them and it was slowly resolved.

Fully agreed you can NEVER have enough random cables in theatre spaces, I've lost count of temp tossing DMX or power through spaces as they didn't put enough in place

If it is a .sch.uk Domain your school owns it and for a small fee (think it is £10) you can ask Nominet to forcibly change the registrar on it and give you access back to the new one you wish, so you choose a new registrar such as CS New Media, setup the DNS with them in-advance ready to go, get nominet to change the tag and off you go. You will have to prove you are the school EG letterhead paper, letter signed by head on it etc... We did discuss it at my place as an option should the LA not be willing to work with us but they did in the end which was much better for all concerned.
