We did't get much choice in which version of Solus we have. County installed it as part of the SIMS move, prior to this we did every install manually, I don't know which is more painful! Just tried ".old"ing the SIMS install and reinstalling manually from the setups and got the exact same error. Tried it as an Administrator and a normal user.

Thanks for replying. Tried that. As much of a pain in the backside it was to re-install it with Solus. And as it is happening on every machine I can't see how it could just be one bad install.

Anyone else come across this error in SIMS when trying to configure the home page? We've recently moved SIMS to a new 2012 R2 server and redeployed the clients with SOLUS 3 (ughh!) and now we're getting that when teachers want to add graphs and things to their home page. The "Value" variable seems to be different from machine to machine (or user to user, haven't confirmed which). We're using Windows 7 pro 64-bit clients. And I've tested it on an 8.1 pro machine with same error. Contacted our SIMS support but not holding my breath that I'll hear anything. Thanks!

To be honest since opening this thread and having demos from both companies I have found Smoothwalll to be cheaper if you put everything into consideration, we're planning on going with the unified firewall/filtering solution, pricing Lightspeed with a separate firewall was more expensive. And I was really impressed with Smoothwall's customer services while we were looking for quotes and had questions, they were getting back to me faster than any other company I've dealt with

I have to say the Lightspeed interface looks very attractive and you can tell it's heavily tailored for schools, we just have to look at getting a seperate firewall while smoothwall do a unified solution. I'd never thought of Sophos doing web filtering, I'll take a look.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far, it's helping us form our choices, I've got a demo booked in with Smoothwalll and an over the web Demo with Lightspeed as well, and still emailing around other places to see what they have to offer. So far Smoothwalll have impressed me with how quickly they are getting back to me!

Hi there, In recent months we've been getting more and more dissatisfied with our local county provided Internet service and we've decided to go it alone. We're going around the houses getting quotes from all over the place and I just wondered if anyone had any advice on who to go with in terms of web filtering. I really like the look of Smoothwall for firewall/filtering but there are other companies out there such as Watchguard that seem to be quite a lot cheaper, but the lower price worries me that there may be something I'm missing and to be honest we've had enough of unreliable and need something solid from day one that can provide us with easy to use web filtering that doesn't rely on me sitting there all day adding websites to a black list (which is effectively our current system). So anyone's experiences positive or negative with Web filtering would be appreciated. It's for a mid-large Secondary School.

Ok, so at our organisation we have an external web proxy run by our local county, with proxy settings distributed via GPO, the problem is with BYOD on the rise we're having trouble with certain devices that either can't take proxy settings or don't handle exceptions well and redirect all traffic, including that meant for internal servers, out to the proxy. Now, I have a tower with 2 network cards that was donated to us running Ubuntu, I've not played with linux as a routing tool before, but all i want it to do is direct all traffic to the external proxy, and add a list of exceptions that remain internal to the network, so i can point some of our devices at it as the default gateway and it can do the proxy decisions for them.
