When we had a need for this I just used a sheet of lighting gel from Drama and it was perfect and some stiff card from Art and made a DIY filter for them with hanging hooks to drop over screens as we had a large range of screen sizes but seemed to work as the cost of filter software was quite high and the one SEN wanted was per machine and they wouldn't fund a laptop / netbook for the student and yeh was a lot of cash to license for all machines / areas etc

I put a basic SSD into my Samsung NC10 and that made it more usable on Win 7 again so I can live with it for basic tasks

Still in-use with Facility I'd expect Progresso also had Student views

If your server clock is more than 5 out your going to have many other issues that are NOT SIMS, you need to sort your NTP out on your network, for instance more than 5 your kerberos will be broken so AD integration stuff will fail like logons etc..

I'd like to see an office PC that draws 200w now a days at idle last time I metered one it was well below 100w in general use, obviously if your sitting encoding HD Video yep I'm sure that is possible but browsing cat videos, basic excel, SIMS use etc it won't be that high if its a modern one. Also never had that issue with HP if its in the clauses for them if they are business they should support as expected and used by the business and some businesses need 24x7 access, fine schools are not like that but if you buy a HP Business desktop its business specified so should go, however I could understand if they are cheap home PCs then yep. It is up to each to make decisions however its a suggestion if they didn't want to go down the TS Route and its not needed for lots of users etc

The life argument is not that much of an issue as actually leaving kit on and running is better as they don't get stressed as that initial start up is a surge and can blow caps that is why servers that have run for many many years sometimes, like old people, fail to get up and start again after being turned off but yes the meter is ticking so a server is easier if you have one and have it all setup etc However the RDG way gives them single user to the own machine and can then use it as if sitting at it so could use it for other apps on it.

You could, if leaving teacher PCs on all the time, use a Remote Desktop Gateway (just needs port 443 to the internet) and then staff connect to the usual PC via that Gateway and off they go.

Or the kids just drink it and enjoy the drunkeness

Every holiday we would give a the IT Rooms a decent clean, work load permiting, we wouldn't get everyone done but got around half done and if we had, shock horror, a quiet after school period / a room was looking bad, we would give it a good clean. Where I work now we have a firm that comes in once a year and gives all the PCs a good clean and they do a reasonable job and its a few quid per PC and we have about 100 to do, we used to be more frequently than yearly but budget cuts hit us all

Some Test-um's do fibre depends on the model, tbh fibre testing if you are not sure what you are doing can be a dark art to work out if its good bad iffy or ugly its probably worth just paying someone to do your fibre testing for you.

When will people learn plaspugs are not suitable for holding a rack to the wall, I've seen too many like that and it doesnt' take much to pull them off. Rawlbolts are where its at on a decent solid wall, if its a stud wall batten between the two studs and then screw that to the batton with decent bitey screws.

Those are awful we had some in one place and think I threw them in the bin in the end as they took about 3x as long to do compared to normal ones and no excuse really its not hard to do it right.

I also have a Test Um unit wasn't cheap but got it 2nd user from a cabling firm who upgraded to the new JDSU unit (which is very nice!) maybe worth talking to your cabling firm they maybe able to come in and test for you or do you a deal to hire one of the units they are using if you want to DIY it when they are on a big cabling job where they are not testing if they are not big enough to have lots of units.

By default it will run the process in the directory you ran the powershell from if I recall when I last had to do this so worth checking that and you can put switches in to force it to use other locations etc...

The issue with Keepass for team use is its so easily messed up, for instance you should never SAVE in it but Synchronise, too many people hit save and then it over-writes so if your using it for team use please beat them up to never ever save but Synchronise and then it will spot changes made to the copy on the server for you to merge.

I've used I think it was an Antec PSU tester before was bout £30 or so and you plugged it in and it checked all the voltages and tested everything was a nifty bit of kit perfect for use by anyone in IT from the Apprentice to me to save the paperclip and multi-meter trick.
