If you do it on-premis rather than cloud nope no internet needed for your own site to keep going. If you do it cloud then yep you need internet to the cloud... As for "painful" route to deploy, its really not that painful if your a simple setup which most stand alone schools would be a standard deploy would work perfectly well and be cheap as chips with Edu Licensing. Bash in some Snom or Polycom handsets and off you go.

Lync with Enterprise Voice its great I'd not look at a full PBX anymore after working with this management is simpler and its all integrated with Exchange so voicemail in that etc its great

Domain Admin membership has broken various things for many years in Outlook / Exchange / Lync / Mobile Active Sync etc... that's nothing new, your regular account shouldn't be a Domain Admin it should be a standard use and then elevate as / when required with a separate one.

However you will increase load on exchange and could slow down performance for users and if your exchange server has a moment they will get no access to anything as its not online to access any mail. Cached mode was added for a reason just turning it off isn't the answer as it isn't actually a fix. Do you have roaming profiles? If so the OST should roam with them assuming you've not blocked it from roaming and thus not be an issue or if you re-direct Appdata to somewhere else again it should follow and not be a big pain. If you don't do either of those things, perhaps users who are in another location could just use OWA instead.

Draytek if you don't mind spending the cash and as your a geek the less id10t proof GUI won't be an issue for you

Yup still got a use for sure so many cars have those integrated radios that are a pile of toss to get swapped without making a mess an FM transmitter are not great (these ain't amazing either) but better than FM.

One thing is surely software compatibility so much EduSoftware isn't Mac ready, as more moves to the cloud that becomes less of an issue but certainly should be a consideration as if you having to use Paralells or Boot camp your adding more cost / complexity to the mix.

Depends if you buy it or just use the freebie we have it globally and was a good buy and its a good asset tool but did cost money.

Lansweeper maybe? It pulls a lot of data in and custom reports its inventory is a lot better than Spiceworks for sure.

The Suicide doors are in all stations but not called that, its a secondary feature as its to keep people from being blow and sucked off the platform by the sheer volume of air they push and pull through tunnels but it does also help keep people, free newspapers, junk, mobiles, shoes, handbags, hats and gloves etc off the track. I had Vitai radios from here - Licenced the model seems to have been discontinued now. But we had them and they were licensed (cheap enough to sort that) and were great and worked well in our old building much better than the unlicensed ones.

On the other side of the fence, those controls are there to protect the school, what if the head was dismissed suddenly or he lost his phone? The remote wipe is a great feature for that, we enforce that on our staff if they add a personal device we reserve the right to hit that button should we need to in the case they loose something or the door is shown to them to clear our confidential data, if they don't like that then don't pair your personal hardware to the company system. You made a mistake... it WILL be scary! When the full package is currently tipping £80 a month it will be very scary cost I suspect but yet its what they should have been doing for a while now.

Virgin's issue was a Datacentre in London lost power and made a huge mess of things as one of our ISPs emailed us saying that if they were using a Virgin backhaul to our site we may have issues due to this and @Domino had fun with his Virgin connection yesterday....
