you need to trunk the ports between the Cisco and the HP, and make sure you add the VLANS to the trunk. Also check the encapsulation on the switch for the trunk ports, cisco has a proprietary protocol , make sure it is 802.1q not ISL. Trunk the ports which connect both switches together.

Correct, if the exchange goes down from powercut you are screwed, this is why local ISP's if the roll out fiber they may try to ger you to get a copper line in too just for phone. If you have fiber you have no phones if there is a powercut.

Im using CentOS 6.4, unzipped the tar file and moved it to /var/www/html. I allowed HTTP / WWW through SELinux and setup the MySQL DB's and ran the setup from http://server.com/owncloud. Worked a treat - we are behind a proxy which we control. But I've not seen / had any issues.

I'd be enabling Spanning-tree, I saw at the local council someone had a mini switch and plugged it in in there office, without permission from IT (They wanted to use there laptop aswell as PC but we didnt have wifi) and it created a switch loop, slowed the network to a halt - spanning tree was enabled and left enabled and we didnt have another problem.

The easier option for you might be to download pfsense, it has squid and dansguardian packages built in but it's got a nice GUI and to the avergae user looks like a router interface like you'd have at home so it's fairly simple. Pf also has Firewalling and VPN. It's free to use, download the ISO and install in a VM or use an old machine. pfSense Open Source Firewall Distribution - Home I have implemented this at a pretty large company, over 1000 users on an IBM server, it also serves Captive Portal for WiFi, It's easier to get up and running and to manage and I believe you can integrate it into AD although never tried. Netgears are 'usually' OK bits of kit. Sounds like a cable problem, how exactly have you got them linked to each other ? and do any of your links go back to the same switch if you know what I mean - this could create a switch loop. Drop your negotiation speed and see what happens... Also what switch are you using at your core ? these switches wont have spanning-tree or if they do it wont be upto much of a standard, I'd see if you have spanning tree turned on on your core switch this may eliminate a switch loop.

Yeah its the monitor, keyboard and mouse rack console I'm after.... I have 4U left in a 42U rack, and unfortunately some of our kit requires a physical server and at present I have a monitor etc stood on the floor - I'll do some digging see what I can find. Good morning to you all from foggy Hull, I am wondering whether anyone knows where I can get hold of (a dirt cheap) rack mount KVM Console ? I seem to find them at like 600-700 a piece and thats quite a bit to spend on a KVM. Anyone know anywhere as cheap as chips ? Has anyone got one they want rid of ??? Well I wouldnt Use D-Link products for anything fiber... I'd use HP/Cisco or Best Juniper. What you need to do is some basic diagnostics... how do you mean when you say the D-Link wont communicate ? You say you have all your fibers connected into that switch whats at the other end of the fibers ? Do you use VLANs ?

IF you dont get along with Nagios, personally it think Ive found a better option....
