Yes it would be, the only bit that worries me about using desktop parts is that at the end of the day this device is going to be "switches on" 24/7/365 and needs 99.99% uptime and I'm note sure desktop components would cut the mustard. Haven't looked at barebones - it's worth a shot though - I'll have a look around.

Yeah, but we need them to be new devices - no not clustering them as many of our clients don't require it. I'd thought of the ebay option but it's a case of offering a service so we need to use new kit - we've had more than one request for it too.

if the price is right then RAID would be a good idea.. Ideally about 300 per server. Preferably Rack mount.

Its bot as simple as just termination.. you need to clean it too. We deal in fiber optics it's who we are and what we do... and we have had brand new cable and when we've looked at it under the right equipment the stuff needs thoroughly cleaning, so you'll need a cleaning kit also. I think they are like a cleaning roller... I'm snot sure as it's not my department but every time I here the word "fiber" around here I hear the word "Clean" also.

Anyone know where I can get reasonably low spec and reasonably cheap servers from these days ? Minimum requirements: Xeon 2.8 Ghz CPU 1-2 GB RAM 60-80GB Hard Disk (SATA) 2-4x Network Ports (Gigabit) A client of mine wants pfsense on a server but the cheapest server I've found comes with a 250 GB HDD which is a waste, but they do want it server based otherwise I'd of gone down the embedded route. Turns out low spec servers are hard to find especially with less than a 250GB HDD in them - Pfsense only uses about 600 MB. Thanks everyone!

Excellent... I've been looking forward to this thread! This is one thing I've never tied, I've only ever had pfsense running on a PC based machine or a VM. Once you have got pfsense up & running on the WG will you be using it / testing it as a UTM device ? I've often wondered whether pfsense would make the ultimate solution as a UTM but never had the chance or time to test it. Looking forward to photo's and some more of your findings. Thanks @twin--turbo PS - If you get chance look on the internet for pfsense home router... you can make some routers actually run pfsense - some of those routers do go on ebay now and again for 30 quid or so, Ideal for those of you with a Cable Internet connection. Its not bad... I like the idea of when I open a document I get all the different types & templates to choose from! Overall it's not bad, I'd rather use that than Windows 8. I now have 59 days for my trial

Dont get me wrong, a VPN with shares would work - but i think in the long run it would create more work. At least with Moodle you can build it, get web access working externally (no clients needed) and sort out the authentication with AD and viola.. Students can put things on there for others to see who have the correct permissions to do so.

Actually as luck would have it... I removed the board - screwed in the mountings and screwed the board in PROPERLY into the mountings... LUCKILY the board fired up and was working - How said friend didn't fry the board is uncanny, especially since they tried to power it on over and over and over and over..... so was just a £30 labour fee to basically rebuild but with mountings this time

I know exactly what this is... it's a case of a dead motherboard I'm afraid the symptoms you describe are the ones of a motherboard shorting... could be some solder somewhere. By all means grab another PSU from somewhere and try that but I reckon it's the motherboard shorting out. I used to build PC's and have come across this many many times, especially when someone brought me a machine they had built and had put the motherboard directly into the case without using the mountings.

Moodle? We do exactly that but at a college, it's quick and easy to set up - takes but an hour. How come it's not an option at the moment ? You could use a VPN and have shares that people can login to - but you then need to supply whoever needs to login with credentials and a VPN Client.

Yes Indeed it can, your'e a so and so though @twin--turbo - I've been waiting ages to get hold of one of those to try out this theory!! In the watchguards some of them have an IDE interfac so you could always use a standard HD if need be.

Contended within the local network, even if a Fiber Node (Exchange) was contended as an end user you'd still get better service than a contended ADSL Line (Leased Line or not).

WSUS and Fog here, I used to use ENGL Imaging toolkit (for Zenworks) when I managed a Novell Netware network... and do miss it a lot.

As a bit of daft have you flushed your browser cache/cookies ? I used to manage an RM Network on CC3 and the techs would sometimes come across with silly errors in RMMC, sometimes RMMC wouldn't even display... they found if they used a differnet browser or cleared the browser data it would start working again. Remote Desktop into the server and running RMMC always worked but that was a long way round it was easier to do it in browser.

Never tried it in Hyper-V because I don't have a hyper-v environment, but it works in VMWare and Virtualbox.

just go to pfSense Open Source Firewall Distribution - Home download the latest beta, or download the normal i386 ISO and download the update zip file and do a firmware upgrade.
