Hi all, wondered if you could clear this up for me, I have created a new VLAN, and have moved over some domain joined PC's over to the new VLAN. Since moving them over users can logon but then weird things happen - for example: User *A* has logged on and got to his Desktop, a login box has popped up asking for Admin credentials before that user can go any further, I input my creds just to see what happens and viola the user can use the system but Outlook wont connect to Exchange and Mapped drives arnt working. User *B* logs onto a different machine and cant even login, he gets no logon servers are available! Everything on my firewall (PfSense) is open to the new VLAN and vice versa, I can ping the entire network from the new VLAN.... so why am I having so many problems - If I move over Domain machines do I need to re-add them to the domain or do some jiggery poker on my DC ? A strange one I've never come across before! TIA.

I have got A CentOS box joined to AD and users can login with there credentials, however I want the desktop shortcuts which they have which are shortcuts to network drives to be on the desktops of the Linux machines. I've seen this before on an enterprise Nortel, and we had to bin the switch. It's a Hardware level failure or it was on the Nortels anyway, the very same symptoms. Although - I would double check what Spanning-Tree is doing, you may not have it enabled but I bet it has Rapid Spanning tree or Loop detect enabled or something similar and it could be dropping the links to the switches - the links that keep dropping are they switch to switch links ???? if this keeps happening it Might be time to ring HP and abuse your lifetime warranty

You could do what I do, I run my own home business and dont pay for hosting. I host my own DNS, using a CentOS server and BIND, my email server uses my DNS server. So what you'd need is your own DNS server but to be honest... You'd be better off just buying a hosted mailbox for your domain you can get them for a couple of pounds a month, because let me tell you this is not an easy setup if you want to do it. BIND is a bit of a monster to setup at this level. My website also uses my DNS servers. You ideally need 2 BIND servers setting up and configuring. Where my domain name is registered I have changed the DNS settings in there. I have a batch file that runs on logon and logoff - it records the username and the time & date. The text file is saved to a folder on the local server. To see if anyone's logged on we just open the text file and look through or search usernames / times. It's not the best way but it works.

Nothing, It'll still do Layer 2 switching just like a normal Layer 2 switch. Layer 3 means it can also understand IP. You don't even have to use Layer 3 if you don't wish. On Cisco layer 2/3 switches from memory you had to enabloe it anyway using the 'router enable' command. Until then it served as a Layer 2 device.

This is what we do here, we have hundreds of servers and virtual servers in our DC all running off of IBM Blade Center servers (IBM Flex System - United Kingdom) these arn't cheap and the juice for each power supply is 2500Watts and there is 4 in one server, we use Cobbler for Linux roll outs... we tried FOG but it just couldnt cut the mustard. Cobbler - Linux install and update server and we also run: Spacewalk - Spacewalk: Free & Open Source Linux Systems Management We roll out mainly CentOS images, prebuilt for architecture. The servers themselves run oVirt (oVirt) Which is actually Red Hat Virtualization but oVirt is free. All of the blades within the server are oVirt nodes. oVirt is self is a lot like VMWare but it's all web based, as is cobbler and skywalk. So all we do is VPN into the DC network and do what we need to do and with everything being web based we can do it all from browser and even do it from a very nice Asus tablet if we so wish! If we spin up a machine say for some one to use for backups then we just create a user account in ovirt, and when they go to the oVirt portal you get a user login page. The user can then create machine on which OS they have specified so they create the machine and use the OS, so they get full access to the machine. If you need any information let me know.

Not a bad idea with RDP, I have just checked my licensing status and Server 2012 I have 10 RDS CALS. I may just build all the machines to Linux and have an RDP Session into Server 2012. Cheers all - you never fail to help!!

OK could I do this another way, could I install Linux on the machines hard drives, and then boot Linux, but on the login screen have a button that will send them to A Windows session on a remote server ?

This is a good one, Boss has agreed to move everyone over to Linux but slowly, So I was wondering if there is anyway that I could do this centrally, sounds impossible to me. Does anyone know how I can create a partition and drop a linux image onto the "new" partition?. I realise I can probably do this via imaging, however I'm running WDS and not sure how I can do this. If I created the new partition on my test machine how do I capture the Drives and then have those drives deployed via a re-image ?, I could also do this via PXE boot possibly, Does anyone know how I could PXE Boot a Linux image from booting WDS ? Good point regarding Lics... that is exactly what we wanted to do - 'I assume by 'manage' you are looking to perform these tasks for your customers from any location.' I may just do it through VPN..... sounds an easier solution.

A couple of our customers outsource there IT, they want us to take it over. Since we will be supplying there connection to the internet, We thought it would be great if As part of out managed service we could manage the domain for them. Some of these companies dont have an onsite teccie and thats why it's outsourced. So if we take it over it'd be great if we could manage it with something like SCCM which I believe is possible, Ive just got myself SCCM so Im going to have a play!

I want SCCM, where is the bets place to get it and whats the best price ? It's coming to a point now where I'm going to be managing other Domains within our network, and also Domains outside our network and I believe If I had SCCM I'd be able to control / manage all aspects of the Domain. I have been asked by one of our customers whether I can manage there AD Domains, from within my own network. If we are supplying there Broadband connection, It should be doable as each customer will be on a seperate VLAN. TIA.

Has this always been the case or has it been happening a while ? Have you added more devices to the switch ? Does sound like an ARP table getting full or the RAM is going iffy, you could maybe try a firmware update if you havent already got the latest.
