Main thing the success of the iPad will do, that no other tablet device will have done, is to bring the whole concept of tablet devices into the mainstream. Whether it's the best device or not it will open the door for a whole stampede of other devices that would have had little if any chance of survival (no matter how good they are) without the massive rasing of awareness that the iPad has given them. I'm not talking about the awareness of the IT Crowd either, we tend to voraciously read and deconstruct every tech article about a new device, it's not us that make these things successes. It's the awareness of Joe Public.

Well given Mr Martins progress towards getting "A Dance with Dragons" finished, we could well be into the second or third set of reruns of the third season before we see it.. Looks to be a very good production though.. for any who don't know it, the Song of Ice and Fire series is NOT your run of the mill Fantasy fayre! Murder, Political Intrigue, Regicide, more murder, religion, Dwarfs (well a dwarf), Incest, more intrigue, rebellion, War, more murder and generally a collection of folks who would make the Borgias look tame by comparison!

Hi RavenADSL, Yep there is a "secret web interface" as you put it, but it really isn't all that secret. Go to our website and take a look. The WebFolder product is able to do what you need, it's a browser based registration utility and essentially does everything Winfolder can do. Htech's suggestion is also technically correct as you could, if the core MIS site was published on your external IP (or the PE teachers iPhones authenticated ont he internal network), use the attendance registration page within the eRegistration module. But that would generally involve a bit more configuration than most users are happy to undertake, also the page that would use isn't optimised for use on a mobile phone sized browser. If you need any more crunchy detail then PM me off list, don't want to run the risk of incurring the wrath of the moderators!

There are many MMORPGS out there that are a LOT more child friendly than Warcraft. Wizards101 has, IIRC, won critical acclaim for being family friendly and even wins with the kids for essentially being a Harry Potter Rip off. However as they are all online/chat enabled you really have to look carefully before jumping in, although the chat interface in Wizards is VERY restrictive (it even prevents the more common L33t alternatives). There is also the consideration of payment method.. many MMO's (like Warcraft) have an up front payment PLUS a monthly subscription. Others offer one-off lifetime payment deals. Some, like the aforementioned Wizards101 are Free to Play, ie. they cost nothing to download and play BUT some may have a micropayments systems built in. Micropayment systems still require some cash outlay but all the content they provide will be described as "optional".. but there is still a large element of peer envy.. Your mate has paid the $$$ to have a swanky little dragon flying next to him... Cue cries of "mum mum mum"... It is WELL worth doing the research fully beforehand. (kicked the WoW habit 3 years ago. after 2 long years of happy addiction )

Oh God.. I hate the UAC!! Turn it off. It's what I'd do. ps. I would recommend none of this for a PC that will sit in the public domain. Your home pc (or the teachers personal laptop) are different animals.

Vista ships with a built in Administrator account in addition to the base user account. However it is hidden by default. It is essentially this account and this account alone which has full administrator privileges. Give any other account the admin privileges and all you actually accomplish is an account that just nags and nags whenever you want to actually do anything admin related. It will let you, but it will still nag. To turn the administrator account on so you can see it and use it, follow the instructions available by google search. Frankly this is probably the most annoying thing I have found about Vista, Microsofts desire to create an OS that tries to micro manage your Windows experience. Hopefully it;s something they will address with Windows 7 I've included an example of one activation method below Detailed Instructions to activate the Administrator Logon to Vista using your normal username and password. Click on the Start button Click on Start Search. Type, cmd. Right-click cmd, select 'Run as administrator' from the shortcut menu. In the black 'DOS box', type the following at the command line: Net help user The idea of the last command is just to observe the options for Net User. In particular, examine the syntax to set the password. The next instruction is the crucial command. I have chosen password = p£ssworD, you may want to choose different characters. Net user administrator p£ssw0rd Net user administrator /active:yes Check the message : The command completed successfully Switch User, or logoff Logon as Administrator Password p£ssw0rD (Your password may be different!) Trap1: There should be no space between the word 'active' and the colon. /active :yes is wrong. /active:yes is correct. Trapx: Pay close attention to the command, it should be active, not activate.

Correct. The only thing you risk is if your admin staff regularly put in manual attendance or if your system is set to update registration marks automatically from periods. The first can be dealt with via a polite conversation with the aforementioned staff. The second can, if its in use, be switched off. Only the school can tell you if they are using that option.

BroDIS from its earliest incarnations has had to communicate with SIMS SQL via the Business Objects. The last one that was able to write back to the databases direct would be going back to SIMS DBF! Ah the good old days

Wrong Matt We have to use Capita's business Objects the same as everyone else. We don't go straight to SQL (as much as I sometimes wish we could!).

Hi Steve, Sorry that the school are shifting over but happy to help. The proposed "Side by side" trial you've suggested should work fine. As long as the school doesn't continue to enter attendance into the classes that are to be taken by the trial users it won't overwrite anything. Essentially the logic works that if theres no mark to transfer then it won't transfer a mark. The untaken register will remain in its default state on the eSchool database and the attendance transfer process won't detect any changed marks so won't transfer anything. Hope that helps.

I didn't realise else I would have been more general IT chatty To Tonyyoung - Give us a call on the Helpdesk as the lesson attendance should now be able to get written back into SIMS. Its a recent development and may still have some teething issues but these are being worked through.

We have one as well, our eContact product sends SMS, Email, Voice mail. It can also be automated to send messages for truancy and the like. Just a quick reply (as due to snow we are all working on huge workload backlog ). Yes the core system is completely Web based. The only components that are not are specific Admin applications for some of the ancillary products (eBehaviour for example).
