Right, this is a good one! Had the LEA round installing Sims on our new 2003 server. This server has everything on it as the old Win2000 is being decommissioned. FMS installed fine but they had loads of problems with Sims so reinstalled SQL and Sims a number of times before it all worked ok. They configured the workstations but they were unable to test them because the ISA firewall was blocking connections. I wasn’t here yesterday so came in today and configured ISA so the workstation would work. That was the good news…. When I opened services I started talking French because there are two of all the SQL services listed (see attachment). One set is running but the other set is disabled. The disabled services are referencing D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1 and MSSQL.2 but these folders have been deleted. In Microsoft SQL Server folder there is MSSQL.3 and MSSQL.4. SQL Server (SIMS2005) and Server Agent (SIMS2005) are referencing MSSQL.3 and Analysis Services (SIMS2005) is referencing MSSQL.4. How do I remove these disabled services? I don’t want to uninstall SQL as that will cause problem for Sims so I was hoping to edit the registry or something along those lines.

We’ve got a number of 3Com 7760 AP’s and I see on the configuration screen that it has a page for rogue AP detection. When I click detect it finds our other Dlink AP’s and classes them as illegal so this begs the question. When setting up an AP with rogue AP detection is there any benefit from adding the existing AP’s to the legal AP MAC address list?

What ports should be opened on a ISA server (internal network) to allow Sims workstations to connect through the firewall and is there a way to test the changes work without having a Sims workstation to hand?

Yes I had a play with it but unless I’m missing something it seems a beta version as the proxy setting are not copied from the users profile meaning each user need to enter them manually.

I don't have the figures with me but I'm sure ours is nowhere near that amount.

Anyone got an ISO of Exchange 2000 that I could download or failing that could someone send me a copy please? As it appears I need the Exchange 2000 install CD to remove the program from the system

One of my schools uses Teacher2Parents and the other uses ParentMail. After seeing both ParentMail wins hands down.

That’s a good price for all of that. We’ve been quoted £835 for the same job and no moving option either.

If your running ISA server you can publish the proxy settings then use DHCP to tell the laptops where to find it.

Mail will not bounce if the server can’t be contacted. EMBC will just keep trying until it times out which I think with the EMBC the time out period is 14 days. Can’t really change the server IP as the old server will be on line for a few weeks yet as it’s still running other services.

If I remember correctly the last time I moved Exchange servers it went something like this: Moved mailboxes from old server to new server. EMBC still forwarding to old server as changeover sometime that day. So mail still comes to old server. With no mailboxes, mail bounces.

I’m moving Exchange over to a new server next week and while EMBC change the forwarding to the new server I would like to stop the old server from receiving mail. Is there a way apart from disconnecting the internet to achieve this?

Perhaps support was the wrong word. What I intended to say is when will MS stop issuing XP security updates.

When is Microsoft withdrawing support for XP? I think that date will impact when we move to Vista/Window7.

Sorry to drag this thread from the grave but I’m confused… with reference to the core switch. Is the core switch a switch that is used solely to connect other switches together? i.e. work stations are not connected to this core switch?

@ICT_Guy @dhicks Nice photos. I’m in the process of planning a new ICT suite and was wondering what you have spaced the machines at? The HT wants our new suite spaced at 600mm which I thought was on the small side. Becta recommends a 1000mm spacing but I bet there are few schools with rooms that big.

I’ve been looking at all in one systems for a new ict suite and having problems deciding on the spec. SCL have a number of different systems SCL Online - Systems > All In One which ones would be capable of running Vista or Windows 7? It’s for a primary school so don’t need anything too powerful but need the all in one for the space saving.

I’ve been told that the computers and trolleys are classed as technical equipment and as such the cleaners are not allowed to touch them. Just a cop out if you ask me.

If it’s a small screen then you’re talking about 10kv to 15kv and around 25kv in the larger screens so it doesn’t do to go messing with it. One thing to consider with VHS players is that if it’s chewed a tape once then it will chew other tapes. Better dump it and buy a new unit while you still can.

Thinking back I remember seeing the server shutting down in a controlled manner so I searched the event log for the day in question and found this.
