  1. As long as they can run the above programs I'm not bothered.
  2. Our admin department is looking to replace their machines. What spec of machine is recommended to run Sims, FMS and MS Office 2007?
  3. Why would the EMBC’s Email Systems produce a stall warning on a certain email but all other emails come through ok?
  4. How do you shrink the log?
  5. We’re moving to server 2008 this summer and I’m looking for a good reference book about the changes from 2003 to 2008. I have previously bought Mark Minasi Mastering Windows Server 2003 but looking at the reviews of the 2008 version [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Windows-Server-Networking-Foundations/dp/0470249846/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240758214&sr=1-2]Mastering Windows Server 2008 Networking Foundations: Mark Minasi: Amazon.co.uk: Rhonda Layfield, John Paul Mueller: Books[/ame] it appears to be a beginner’s book. Any recommendations for other book that would make a good read?

    OWA spell checker

Found the answer Overview of the spelling checker in Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server 2003
  7. I’ve got an Exchange 2003 SP2 box and when using OWA there’s no spell checker. Is there an option in System Manager to enable it or do I need to install something?
  8. Is there a limit on the maximum size of DFS share as some of ours are 7+GB.
  9. Wow... HT will will have a baby if I tell him that I was thinking of something under £400.
  10. I'm after recommendations for a core switch that will connect 2 servers each with port trunking and link 5 edge switches. Both servers and edge switches are copper GB. Thanks.
  11. Thanks for all the advice guys it’s appreciated. @matt40k @mb2k01 I’m assuming you are against putting Sims and Exchange on the same box because of the combined loading. In the school in question Sims is only used by 2 people and Exchange will be sending/receiving a combined total of no more than 100 emails per day so will that still cause problems? On my other servers that are running 2003 I have scripted NTBackup that runs every night and backs up to an NAS drive located in a remote building. I understand that server 2008 doesn’t come with NTBackup so I will need to buy software for that. Any recommendations for software that will backup to NAS and work with minimal supervision?
  12. Looks like we have money for a new server this year so I wanted your thoughts on the server spec. Last year my other primary school replaced their only server with a Dell 2900 running Server 2003 and it runs quite nicely. Dell PowerEdge 2900 2 X Intel E5410 2.33GHz 4GB memory 5 X 146GB SAS HDD + 1 X 146GB hot spare in raid 5 config 48xCDRW/DVD 3.5” FDD Redundant PSU PERC 6/i controller I was thinking of a similar server this time, only fitting it with more memory and running server 2008. It would be a second DC and would run: File sharing, Exchange 2008, DHCP, SIMS/FMS and SQL. Is Server 2008 more resource hungry like Vista is? And what should I increase the memory to?
  13. How do I push IE8 out using WSUS? I've selected the IE8 dynamic installer but that's not doing anything
  14. Thanks for that. I'll keep an eye out for the little darlings
  15. Our DHCP address leases page shows a number of addresses with blank names. Any idea why?
  16. Their using Sims .net and FMS 6.112
  17. When I've seen our LEA setup a SIMS server they always change the config.nt file and add the command 'files=254'. Is this a legacy command from the old SIMS and not needed now?
  18. Each laptop will need its own cd even if the laptop is encrypted with the same password.
  19. Thought so, thanks for the replies.
  20. I’ve been shown a document that needs returning to our LEA about internet filtering and the school needs to choose a level. Currently we have local control of filtering and have done for 2-3 years with no problems at all. Now reading this document it appears that if you have local control of filtering new websites are not added to the filter list which I always thought they were Local control of filtering: “when embc adds a newly discovered website to the blocked list which applies across the whole embc region it will not be blocked in your school” Surely this is wrong? I thought local control was when the embc added sites to the list but the school could make exceptions and force the sites through plus block sites that are not on the list.
  21. @laserblazer No offence but £240 is litter more than scrap value. I wouldn’t worry about it.
  22. We have the ActivExpression voting handsets and wondered if there’s a way to set expression up on one machine and copy the configuration to the other class machines so I don’t have to go round the whole school manually adding each expression handset
  23. I’m in a similar situation in that one of my schools is using Winsuite in the ICT room but not in the classrooms and then in the ICT room it’s only the students who get the Winsuite restrictions/set desktop. Due to me not wanting to install Winsuite on the new replacement server I’m going to remove Winsuite from the ICT room computers so I’m in the process of making a new GP that will redirect the desktop to a shared folder containing the icons/shortcuts and only apply this GP to students that logon to the ICT room computers using a WMI filter on the computer name. This GP will only need the desktop redirection as the other students restrictions will come from the existing default student GP that applies to students whether in the ICT room or the classrooms.
