Well worth it. Unfortunately I know of some who have ripped it out in favour of deep freeze etc, but in a fully automated (eg rebuild room every few weeks) setup, inc windows updates, its pretty shiny. You can also use it to give control back to staff by letting them install software from you approved library (and set up approval routines for requests of software). Handy.

A good point there, its not just about the "technical" load, but the touchy feely user support and visibility that matters. As one to one (whether school supported or not) becomes more prevalent, the support model in schools will change. A lot of schools are getting managed services for print, and others, reducing that burden... To free up time for other things

You could look at split dns, by adding a stub domain for the school.com, with a host record for mail (and any other hosts which are accessed internally but are *.school.com).

I took on "trainees" from the Uni, they had to do a year in industry as part of their course. They have a vested interest in doing well (have to pass the year), have good knowledge (they are in year 3) and as has been said, they can do a lot of the basic stuff for you

There were, I think I saw some last year. I will have to check it out, unless @PhilNeal or @Paul_Featherstone can throw the Resource ID up quickly... I think that's another point really to add to above.... There area lots of posts about how to install SIMS etc on here - but the real source should be SupportNet, perhaps the Resource ID for that can be added here too?

Im going to wade in with my size 10s on this issue now - after staying quiet for a while. I think the biggest issue is we forget that software evolves, and the recommendations for installation of it will change as well. A lot of the documentation to which people have referred is pre Solus 3 as @matt40k and others have said. Also, a number of the installs that people are checking and seeing are not as "currently" recommended need to remember when they were installed. Just because they were installed one way once, doesn't mean they wont change as a product evolves and processes change. Also true is that Capita aren't the only people who complete installs - there are many support units who also do this. Consider how many SIMS installations there are, and how many different ways people set up their networks. The software is on your network, it is to a certain extent, your responsibility to set up the network and its security how you want it to be. I remember when I had the second SIMS instance set up at a former School - Capita came in and did it as part of a managed process. The first instance had been moved from server to server by me, and my predecessor before that. I think the point is, look over your setup and make sure you understand it, and how it works. If you aren't sure, or want advice - then ask Capita or your Support Unit. I believe @PhilNeal was raising how important the security of SIMS installations are, rather than pointing the finger at anyone in particular

If you wanted to stay SLG - you could always look at a third party to host, Capita or depending on your area - LA. TASC is one option, some VLEs have this in too - I think I saw Frog did at one point.

The biggest change in this version has to be Sims Service Manager...which will start the bringing together of shared Sims components. InTouch is really affected by this first, but it will integrate other areas soon too. Ive been trying to dig out the info I had for this, as it makes pretty interesting reading what is happening...

I saw a demo of these bits of kit a year or so ago...little cubes with displays on them, that you could use for literacy and numeracy. They work as a set, and have gyros in them, and you use them almost like a game to complete various tasks by putting them next to each other, turning them round, arranging them in a certain order... etc I cant remember for the life of me what they were called!

Hi All My blog is in my signature link below. My understanding on the authentication is that it is Google or Microsoft account. When you set up the app, you link your credentials via a one time activation process. I think there are some videos being prepared on this.
