I was at the Technet event in London the other day - where we got a nice talk and demo of all the new virtualization stuff. I will hunt out the details from it - and post the url to the presentation notes... Looks quite useful - but as mentioned above, the sequencing could be a pain - but worth it in the end no doubt.

Oh joy - looks like Ive got a half term of rebuilding RIS images... Has anyone tried doing an slipstream yet? Might give it a go on my test box tomorrow. I will post up any findings...

Hidden here too - as pretty much useless. Deleting from their MyDocs (mapped drive to server) doesnt bin it to there anyway. Staff and Students have got used to coming and seeing us and asking nicely for us to restore it...

Anyone in the midlands area would be worth looking up Laptop House. I know Im down in Devon, but Ive worked with them for a few years now and they've not let me down. Like ICT Direct, who I can heads up too - small company, reliable and can source pretty much anything. Morning... Ive just completed the upgrade (well I say just - it took about 2 months!)... You are going to need a new server is the first place to start. I would recommend that what you do is: 1. Install x64 Server 2003 on it 2. Install Exchange 2007 SP1 on it 3. Migrate a few test mailboxes 4. Migrate remaining mailboxes 5. Migrate public folders 5. Remove Exchange 2003 6. Most important thing is allow plenty of time for it.

We had the same problems with damage and petty messing with the machines... All ICT suites now have CCTV - the previous Network Manager put in 2 trial axis cameras. I have put in the rest - and found some nice cheap Panasonic ones. Not POE, but the cable company I use put in a system which passes the power down audio leads to the camera from a transformer. Works a treat. The cameras are £59.00 - so a lot cheaper than the axis. Also - for recording software - try ActiveWebCam from PYSoftware. One off cost, unlimited cameras. I think it worked out as about £50, as it is american. PM me for more details. Im in Devon, if anyone wanted to take a look at the system.

Ive got a load of these printers - and once i got past the intitial problems, they have been great. The cost to run has been ok for us - depends where you get your toner from. We use Xerox compats - at £145 a full kit. Things to watch out for: 1. Latest drivers from HP. DO NOT USE THEIR INSTALLER! Add printer manually, create the TCP Port (standard port not HP Port), install drivers from location (thus using the INFs and not the installer). 2. Untick the Bi-Directional support - this is what locks up the queue

Nelson Thornes Software.... Especially the latest e-maths, which doesnt work with rthe latest flash version. No workaround - other than down grade flash! YEah like thats gonna happen for one piece of software. Prodesktop 8 was a pain too

The public folder support was missing in action in the RTM version of Exchange 2007 Management console. Install SP1 and voila... You can always just use the Outlook client though as well... Thumbs up for Sharepoint here too - using it for our intranet and replacement for the old StaffShare and StudentShares (eventually!).

Heads up here for Ranger Print Manager. Not too expensive, runs on your print server, no client install (just point a shortcut in startup to the client exe on your server). Also has a web based creditor for techies. Full auditing and history. PM me if you want to know more.

We did this in Sept 2007, after the Quinetic solution we used to use was stopped. Went with Acers - the 3yr EDU Warranty and Accidental Damages swung it. The machines cost £322 each (including bag, mouse and warranty etc) - though we did by 55 of them. Specs... AMD dual core 1.6, 512ram, 80gb hdd, cd/dvd multi writer, wlan, 14" screen. They had to be light too - these were 1.8kg i think. This has just made my day... it has become the new game of our students to change the screens to high res and put sticky keys on! We spoilt their fun with the screen rotation patch for intel gfx. Thanks guys

So long as you set the permissions on the redirected folder to "Read only" this shouldnt be a problem. It is what I have done. Plus, as the start menu and desktop on our system comes from DFS - they never see ther server names anyway. When working with redirected Start menu - well worth looking at DFS - one poor server will get beaten to death otherwise! I cant remember where I have done the address bar in explorer windows. I must have done it somewhere though as we dont have this problem. I will look it up on Monday for you. I suspect it is probably something you will need to set in your default profile.

Also worth checking out... a great little app called Active User Manager. Used to cost - but now free from Mikey Magic's Web Site - Active User Manager for Windows 2000 & 2003 Active Directory (AD). We use it for managing the whole user list for AD. Some handy features including reset permissions. More info on their site.

Ive just completed implementation of Exchange 2007, moved from 2003. Started the process at Christmas. Feel free to drop me a line if you want any advice. I would doubt that RM have yet done integration to Exchange 2007 tools as the console is massively different to 2003. One tip - if you "bin" users mailboxes for abusing the system like we do - do not use the "Remove" option - this removes the whole AD Account!! You need to use "Disable". We started to do this from Sept 07 - as the quinetic solution we bought into (with the Tungsten Palms) was bought by Capita. We could not afford the cost of the new Capita solution (and from comments on the forums ... I am glad we didnt!). The laptops were also chosen as more flexible - can use for teaching and not just registers. I would agree with earlier comments - make sure your wireless infrastructure is top-notch. On anything but a really good signal - SIMS has a tendancy to not login. Obviously, being wireless and not cable, it is a bit performance challenged. We recommend that where there is a cable point - use it, and not bash the wireless! The main problems will come when its update time... Other alternatives: Facility CMIS which is web-based, so you dont have the program load/comms overhead. Cue battle over which MIS is better....

@ SimpleSi: Just on the server - the workstations you map to the printer should pick up the settings you specify on the server. There was a time just before xmas where a load of dodgy drivers made their way out of HP - caused a few spooler service crashes due to conflicts. There is also some strange pre-requisit for HP Universal 6 with some drivers which I have recently found - like the new HP 1320 driver. Wierd... Ended up tracking down a load of the older drivers for my printers in the ftp site.

I found it...! YAY - since it is such an old piece of software it is quite basic, thankfully. If you get this problem - go to \\\\HISTORY\HISTORY\SYSTAT You will see files named the workstation id name. Delete these to clear "ghost" logons. Ive done a script to sort this... Thank god for that!!

Hmmmm. Ive tried this and the damn users are still showing as logged in if I use the "List Users" after enabling the utilities. If you leave it for long enough (havent yet worked out the exact period of time) then it sorts itself (it must have a timeout). Problem is - until then, you are locked out. Could be be related to everyone using Successmaker logging in as the same windows user?? Grrrr.... i hate this software! Ideas??

We are still using the old old version of Successmaker - the one when it was still called CCC! Works great - most of the time. It is set up with its required two shares "History" and "CAI1". You run the configure app on the workstations to be used for Successmaker - give them all unique Station IDs then it copies all the gubbins it needs to C:\LOCALCAI. A shared restricted account is set up - "successmaker" which maps the two drives as used for configure above. GPO set to give full control to the user on the LOCALCAI and full control manually set on the two network shares. Now heres where the fun begins.... Most of the time the app starts up just fine - and the users do their thing using their separate Successmaker logons. However - after a while, we get the "No Licences available" error on startup. You check in the Successmaker manager - and sure enough it is showing users still logged into stations which aren't being used. The users are exiting properly so its not that. We are not supported by RM on this (in fact Im not sure this was RM's problem then) so advice please. Thanks Stuart

I had this problem earlier in the year with these beasties... they keep going offline. After a long call to HP Support via our printing supplier - I got a solution. Its worked without a hitch ever since. What you need to do is... 1. Ensure that the printer driver is the most current, and install as a Standard TCP/IP Port 2. DISABLE Bi-directional support (this is why they go offline - apparently, they dont like this!) 3. Restart your spooler services On another note - look out for a load of conflicting HP Printer drivers! We had loads of fun and games with the 2100/2300/1320 drivers - which bombed the spooler on the local machine. In the end - are now using universal.

Before Christmas... was getting ready to set this beastie up - and had favorites to all the links to previous peoples nightmares with it. Problem... went to follow them today and cant find them anywhere! Has anyone got any advice on how to get this one to work properly!?
