If you have Google Apps for Ed you can force the users to use passwords, enforce sync, encrypt the data on the device, Enable application auditing, enable device policy, send device alerts to email address and remote wipe. VMware are creating a secure android vm in response to company concerns over security which will mean it will be allowed on MOD sites and other secure places of work.

EDIT to above post. After creating you form you end up with a webpage that can be attached to you site, emailed or sent as a doc internally.

Yep I also use Google docs. Its very good and gives charts and spreadsheets with all the info.

The data is going into Google which is secure and will also have lots of other sensitive data. Why would they need to put it on a stick or anywhere else if they can access the data from anywhere anyway, that's the point of going cloud based is it not.

I had this. I found that after the update the dhcp bindings had been removed. I re-ticked the bindings (in DHCP) and bingo all working.

Not had time to play with that but it does look good.

You are within your legal rights to request a break down, our la tried to do the same. Also if 15% of schools opt out the Grant can not be kept by the CC. They only have the power to keep the money if its going to benefit 85% of the schools or more. (or something like that)

I may be wrong but they probably don't give the schools access to the admin pages and so could charge for the general up keep and admin side of things. Its like charging for open source, you cant charge for the software itself but you can charge for the service you oversee that uses that free software. If I was a Norfolk school I would be requesting a breakdown of services / costings, just so I can compare against other companies.

I used Sites to create a website for the school to log in to that has all the apps and resources in one place. I also created some very very basic walk through guides on the resources page. I enabled 1 item at a time and showed the staff how to use that part, then when they were completely comfortable with that I would switch on another app. I have had very very good feedback. The staff have found the Google system very easy to use and very powerful. Only one of my schools has started to use this. It is the last stage in my roll out. So far so good and I will be introducing it to my other schools. The local community college has been using the full suite of apps including docs for about a year and a half. The last time a had a chat with them they were very happy with the Google system.

Non of my primary schools took it up even though our LA was pushing it hard.

XBMC on windows is very good. A few years back it had all sorts of issues but v10... is very stable. if your using it with a tv get a remote control with a trackball or a smartphone to control the interface.

I used a adventure games creator to create an adventure game using photos of the school. They had to turn on a computer in class six to get a key to open the door and so on. It was very easy to use and free. Adventure Maker Downloads edit: It is so easy I am going to get the kids to do it in computer club. (primary school)

Back when I tested both I found I could control and lock down more with the Google system, although I would imagine MS will continue to add more control features over time and may have done so since I tested it.

You can setup Google Apps for Ed for free and without it causing any issues with your current settings. You don't need to change any dns or MX settings to try it out. I would go to the GA for Ed site and sign your school up. That way you can have a play. If you like it you can setup mx records and dns directors so the system can replace your current setup.

Dell does a nice 5 year warranty offer. I have recently purchased some Samsung 400B and they are very nice. I got them with a discount from stonecomputers but they only have 3 year warranty.

Yep thats right I'll do the same and see what happens on my servers when I am next at the school. Its called seizing rolls. Not done it myself so if we both look into it and post back that would be handy.
