For a number of reasons. 1.They do not have dns control the LA does and they charge a few hundred to do the changes. 2. They don't want email or domain changes. With Google Apps you can setup everything docs, websites etc using the school domain but without changing dns settings. In Google apps control panel you can setup redirection to domains or DNS changes, its your choice. Is my original question possible?

Think I might bottle out on this. Going to take a vm of the server as a backup, but will do a standard migrate. Move all the files and roles onto the microserver, check all is ok and then move them back. Its long winded but is something I have done many times. The virtual element is adding in some confusion for me.

Yes one server in the school that does everything. And I have my own micro server that I will need to remove from the school at some point. So do you mean - setup 2008r2 on my micro server add 2008r2 to domain dcpromo microserver At this point would I make the 2008r2 master dc or not? then vm convert the 2003 server move the 2003 vm onto my 2008r2 microserver wipe the old server and setup os

Windows server 2000 to Virtual

VMware converter will stop all the services for you, but to be 100% you can do it yourself. It works very well on a live server even a live DC and is free. -
What is the difference between shutdown.exe -s -t 30 and shutdown.exe -f -s, which was listed on another site.

Basically I am updating a server from 2003 to 2008r2 and have managed to get hold of a hp micro server to aid me in the update. My plan is to install 2008r2 on to the micro server, then dcpromo and move the roles. At that point I was going to virtualize the old 2003 server and move that on to hyper-v on the 2008 server. At that point I can wipe the old 2003 server and install 2008, move everything back. does that sound about right? Looks like SCVMM needs a server to run from while it does its thing. As this is a one off h2v and its a small primary with no spare servers would I be best using the disk2vhd? Thanks

it does do %username% but you need to add the symbols that are found in the button next to the share entry box. Looks great. will have a play -

With the version I am running that would be 25 currently connected users, so you could give out the connection app to a 1000 users if you wanted. The reason I say with my version is I have not got round to updating to the latest version and I notice the wording has changed on the openvpn as site, it no longer says concurrent users but Perpetual License Fee Per Client Connection. At some point I will fire up a test version in a vm and see what if anything has changed. -
I am a bit of a Google Apps for ED fan but have been asked to look at using parts of both MS & Google systems. I can create a landing page with links to all the apps needed for both systems, and keep usernames and passwords the same for both systems. So in theory I should be able to create a reasonably seamless experience. It's been a while since I tested out the MS system. Do they still need changes made to the schools DNS settings even if the school does not need the MS email system? Anyone using both systems?
