I recently took over a few new schools and one does not currently have folder redirection set up. What are the implications of setting up folder redirection on a network that does not use this? What happens to the network home folders, do they get merged with the files currently in the 'My documents' folder? What happens with any documents currently in 'My documents'? Also I have noticed when installing some curriculum software it can complain about a users home folder when it is redirected saying the H:drive is not a valid folder or something like that. Any work around.

Don't get me started on macs

If I was to get enterprise and install roles on this physical box, does that mean I can not install any virtual servers without additional licence. If I was not to install the roles on the physical box I can then install up to 4 virtual servers. Is that correct?

I look after 8 schools, all have windows 7 and this has not been an issue. Will do a search.

Hi, I have just taken on a new small primary and noticed that in the pupils home folder area I had two folders named 'my documents'. All the pupils log in as a class, so in this home folders area I have class1, class2, my documents, class4, my documents, and class 6. The shares and security for the two 'my documents folders have the correct class name, so class 3 and class 5. The server policies and scripts are set up the same for all class users. The only difference I can see is these two classes are using windows 7, all the rest are still on xp. If I rename the 'my documents' folder back to class3 or 5, they change back after the class has logged on. Whats going on.

Thank you all for your help with this. Just so I am 100% clear, I will have all roles on the new 2008r2 server and have GC on both the new 2008r2 server and the older 2003 server. Is that right?

Why not use Google Sites. Its free, Uses WYSIWYG, has built in slideshows and takes about half an hour to get the staff using it for them selves. You can play with the free one, just sign up for gmail, then if you want to take it to the nest stage sign the school up for a Google Apps for Education account, which gives your school unlimited websites, docs, callendars all of which can be shared with the google sites. You can also turn it into a VLE, not bad seeing as its free.

Going to try and fix the xp laptop rather than Win7. Why would I not have the option 'offline files' when I right click on a network drive in xp?

Can I leave GC on the 2008r2 box along with making the 2003 a GC?

Hi, Very recently took over a school, so still working things out. The other day a teacher had a new windows 7 laptop that they wanted set up. they also wanted the home folder synchronizing (offline files) as they had this on the old xp laptop. This all worked ok. This afternoon she got her old xp laptop out and it no longer synchronizes. It does not even try when logging on or off. We then got her new Windows 7 laptop out and although it has the green arrow, it also does not appear to be synchronizing. If I left click on the xp laptop home drive I do not get the option to 'make files offline' The server has a gp setup which is for enabling offline files and the laptops are in the same OU. If I run gpresult /r it does not list the offline files gp. The teacher is convinced it's the new windows 7 laptop that has had a knock on effect and caused her xp laptop to stop synchronizing. Any ideas how I should proceed?

I did all my courses and learning on 2000 server. Thanks for the info. How would I be best to septate the roles? is it possible to seize all roles if 1 server has all the roles and goes down?

Its a small primary, with limited money and all the primary schools in the area have only one server. I did trial having a BDC in a test setup and got frightened off as AD got corrupted and the corruption got replicated, which would have been a pain to fix. Being a primary they would be ok to wait for a full restore. TBH I go round and round this in my head and did follow a thread on this site, which ended in the person deciding to keep it as a single server setup.

Yep, I moved all roles and GC to the new server but the old one is still listed as DC in Acitve directory and the new one as GC. Is this correct until I demote the old server? I would have thought having all the roles on the new server and none on the old would make the new server the main DC.

Just one more question. Why does the old server (which I have not demoted yet) say its a DC and the New server say its a GC. Is this normal? Notes: repadmin /showrepl gives the other servers info, as expected. Replication is working fine now. All setting such as PDC, Op Master etc all have the new server name. Just so you are all aware, Google do not mind another school calling the help desk on behalf of a school that does not have access to the full support system. They will also cc any other email addresses with the job updates.

Thanks for all the info. It looks like all is ok, just seemed to take much longer to start replicating than normal.

its been about 20 mins since I pointed the old server dns at the new server. Had lots yesterday after I rebooted both servers but nothing since that jumps out at me as being an issue. Just dumped a new text file in the netlogon folder and it replicated almost instantly. but if I make a change in the kix script it does not get replicated. EDIT - Kix is replicating. I deleted the old file and created a new one. YAY.

More info: Well the propagation issues might be down to DNS setting in network adapters on the old server was still pointing to itself rather than the new server. Will need to wait to see if that helps.

More info. when I run netdom query fsmo on new server all roles are listed as running on the new server but when I look in AD\domain controllers the old server is listed as DC and the new as GC.

Hi, I recently added a new 2008r2 server to our 2003 domain and moved all rolls to the new server as the old one 2003 server will be dumped soon. I ran dcpromo on the new server and all went ok. it has dns active directory and sysvol all populated. I then migrated dhcp and made the setings point to the new server so all computers logging on should and do point to the new server. Odd thing is, if I make a change to the kix script in netlogon on the new server this does not get copied to the old server. The other odd thing is that all computers still look to the old server for the kix script in sysvol. Any pointers as to why this might be happening.

Can I just jump in as it sounds like this will be the first time you have set up a new server or migrated a server and you are heading for trouble doing this on a live set up. I would get a decent desktop or laptop install vmware server, install a server os on the laptop as a virtual machine and learn to migrate the systems over. EDIT: While typing two more posts have been added. Although it will be easy to upgrade to R2, you will not have much choice soon and will need to migrate to 2008R2. I would spend some time learing how to do this.

What I have noticed with Google Drive is you can add files to the drive and they are cached locally but then sync up to the cloud, So if I have a large file or many files they are copied very quickly into the local drive and you can move on to other work while in the background it gets synchronised.
