This site may have a small number of general UK technicians from companies etc but I bet it's a very high percentage of school / educational technicians on these forums.

Not 100% sure what you are replying about but Android do let you access the Play Store without a credit card, they also let others adjust the OS like LearnPad and others do, so you can very easily push apps etc out without any fuss what so ever.

Seems odd to me that the RDP file is using the metro proxy settings. Seems even stranger that MS would build a system that does not take it's settings from another part of it's own system.

Rebuilt laptop from scratch but same issue, although I have found why it is not working. When I install windows 8 I am not able to get the 8.1 update without running the following command, netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie After running that command the 8.1 update installs. What I have found is if I change proxy setting to direct connection and then run the above command I can then remotely connect to the schools server from home. I was told to do the above command on the Edugeek forums but not really sure what it does etc. Should I be doing the above command to get 8.1 update installed? or should I be doing something else? Am I OK putting this back to direct connection? Why does it seem that Windows 8 has a hidden proxy section? Any advice about this would be very helpful.

paid for cert. all settings and versions are the same. I have just restored one laptop to factory image that came with the laptop, and although it looks like Sysprep has run (add region, name etc) it ended up with the same SID as the other laptops, so I ran Sysprep logged in and the system connects to the remote server. So rebuilding from scratch and running sysprep before anything else looks like a winner. Going to keep adding software / updates and keep checking the remote connection.

Yes a gateway. Has been working fine for years and still OK for Windows 7. EDIT: And 1 windows 8 machine. Very odd.

Hi, I am able to connect externally to the schools remote desktop gateway from any Windows 7 laptops, I can even access using my home windows 8.1 laptop but almost none of the school windows 8.1 pro laptops can connect. they all give the following error, 'your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is unavailable' I have one Windows 8.1 laptop that can access the remote server and this was set up the same as the other windows 8.1 laptops. All laptops work internally including the ones that do not work outside the network. This is becoming a pain as I have tried everything I can think of. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks. They all have the same SID. I presume running Sysprep will fix that?

OK I have got round the sysprep issue and will report back my findings.

I purchased 8 Windows 8.1 laptops for a primary school recently and noticed some odd things happening such as WSUS only displaying 1 of them at any one time. I think they may all have the same SID (not sure). I have just gone to run sysprep on one but that comes back and says it can not run on an OS that has been upgraded. Not sure what to try next. Thanks

When I run that it just replaces the laptop listed in WSUS with the last laptop I ran the script on. I have 8 new Windows 8.1 laptops. All other laptops are working fine (Win7)

Hi, We always get laptops with an OEM Windows licence and this has always worked fine in the small primary schools, but I have an issue with the last 8 laptops we purchased from Samsung, as only one of them displays in WSUS. If I reauthorize a laptop not listed in WSUS this gets switched to the laptop that did the reauthorize. I believe this is a SID issue but have never had this with other Samsung OEM laptops or Dell ones for that matter. Should they have all come out with the same SID? What can / should I do to get these up and running? would running sysprep help? I can purchase an upgrade licence from our LA, should I try doing this?

At one of my primary schools we are having issues with the last free notebook software on Windows 8.1. Just installed the 2014 evaluation version on one laptop and the issue is fixed. All my primary schools have gone with smartboards over the years as the software cost was part of the hardware cost, splitting these will probably make all my primary schools look at alternative products.

Google Apps have just released a cloud based migration tool so it should be very easy now to migrate from EasyMail to Gmail. Google Apps update alerts: Cloud based migration of email to Google Apps Can't advise on Office 365 but it does have migration tools. I moved all my schools from EasyMail to Google Apps for Education yeas ago as EasyMail is very basic / restrictive.

I have 1 laptop with this issue, odd that the rest are all ok. Cheers

I have remote desktop gateway at all my primary schools. It's built into Windows servers but can be fiddly to initially set up, although once it's up it just keep working without any tinkering needed.

Dell laptops are known for having poor batteries after 3 years. I always get Samsung laptops and the battery's last at least 5 years. Last round of staff laptops I got them some Samsung series 5 ultrbooks with touch screen. They came with 5 year next day onsite warranty and cost about £570. The staff love them.

I will normally get asked to purchase some more ipads by the head or business manager but I then remind them we use Android, unless they want me to start installing ipads, at which point they reply 'thats what I mean, that tablet thing we like, we need more'. A lot of staff call anything tablet sized an ipad which does cause confusion. Our LA got all the schools together as they had a head teacher that had moved his school over 100% to 1-2-1 ipads and he stood in this massive hall and said how wonderful the ipads had been and they had removed all laptops etc from the school. The head did not answer technical questions as he was not involved in the setup and not very technical. I was really enthused by his speech and contacted the schools Network Manager directly to see if I could visit the school and was shocked to find out they had not actually migrated to ipads but had tested then with a class. So you have the LA pushing ipads on all the schools based on a project that was still being tested. This was over a year ago and I know of a number of schools that purchased ipads directly of the back of that speech.

LearnPad - The Tablet Computer Designed for Education Seriously amazing at managing android devices. You can change entire desktop with folders and apps from SEN to KS1 in seconds from either the management software or the pupils can do it themselves by scanning a bar code. Lovely bit of software.

At all my Primary schools we supply partially managed Android tablets but the apps are chosen by the staff or learnpads which can very easily deploy apps, software or complete desktops. I have been getting really good feedback about the learnpads but not sure if they would be any good for KS3+
