OK Thanks. So am I OK simply importing the backed up database or should I use Sims Database Management Utility (dbAttach) to detach the database and then re-attach. I would prefer using the first option as it leaves the original databases in place should something go sideways.

Morning all. I was going to move the SQL (Sims & FMS) databeses from a Windows 2008r2 server running SQL 2012 Express, to a new Windows 2012r2 server also running SQL 2012 Express, simply by restoring the backed up database files but @matt40k mentioned something about a migration tool in another post, although it was not mentioned in the context I am using. I will be leaving the Sims, FMS and Document Server files on the old server for the moment and will only move the databases, but will use a re-director. Currently the Sims and FMS databases are backed up using a script. So I am wondering, what is the correct way of moving the databases to a new server?

While I am at it I would like to change the starting IP for the DHCP addresses. Currently our leases start at *.*.*.16 but I would like it to start at 20 or 25. How do I make this change without killing everything.

Uninstalled DHCP role, re-installed and without needing to import again all scopes and leases are imported. Odd, but that's Windows for you. Cheers

I am trying and failing to move DHCP from 2008r2 to 2012r2 server. I am trying to run this power shell script from the 2012r2 server, replacing win2k8r2-dhcp.corp.contoso.com with the 2008r2 server details. But I am getting this error - the term 'export-dhcpserver' is not recognized as the name of the cmdlet. Anyone got any advice.

I was just coming back to say that the new DC is Virtual and disabling host time sync has fixed the time difference. Thanks to @Steve21

Having real issues with this. The time difference between the new server and old server is 5 mins. Even if I try to set the old DC to the same external Time service as the new DC it still lists our old external time server and not our new one. It does not want to change it's external time server for some reason or use our new DC for its time. WHY?

I issued the following commands to update the new 2012r2 DC The time updated OK on my new 2012r2DC I am trying to get my old 2008r2 DC (which did get it's time from an external time server) to drop it's settings and get it's time from my new DC Server. I am using the following command but the times are not the same on my old and new servers. Any thoughts? Does everything I have done look OK?

About 5 years ago when I installed 2008r2 and migrated the roles and need to do something that made the dc update its time from an external source. Having just installed a 2012r2 server and migrated the roles a few of the steps that I needed to do for my 2008r2 migration are no longer needed such as domain prep etc and I wondered if I still needed to worry about the time server on my new 2012r2 DC. Hope that makes sense.

Same as above. All my primary schools have Google sites as the main website and bit of other Google services for what you could call a VLE.

Not used direct but like the fact I can update Sims on our RDS server so users do not need to worry about very slow updates at home or do not need to bring in laptops for Sims updates which is an issue with vpn.

Just had the bursar at one of my primary schools saying they might as well give chromebooks a go as the jump in MS licencing has altered the sweet spot that they were aiming for. Most of my schools had started to look at Google a while back but switched back to MS when they were able to buy a laptop + Windows Pro for not much more than a chromebook. This change in price is going to effect schools on a really tight budget that could not front up the costs of an EES agreement in the first place and push them to alternatives.

I really like this idea. I look after a few primary schools and they are all accessible using an IP address. What would I need to do at each site to get a second DC working but located at another school. I assume I would need to do something with DNS at each site so the server at the remote location can access the network at it's real school. Do you have any notes or info?

Some have said it could be an issue if the virtual DC went down because the host would have issues logging onto the domain as it would need the virtual DC to be running before the host booted up, which obviously is not possible, but my hosts are not going to be domain joined, so is that still an issue?

I know MS say you need to have at least one physical DC but would the following scenario get around this. I am setting up a hyper-v host for a small primary school with 1 VM having DC+DNS on and the other VM having data etc. This host will not be domain joined. I have a second older server that I was told I should install as a physical server with DC+DNS but this does seem like a massive waste of a server and I would really like to visualizer this server and run a few other things including a second virtual DC+DNS How much of an issue is it if I do not use the old server as a physical DC server? but run this older server as a second host with a second vm DC? Does the fact I was not going to add the host servers to the domain make a difference?

It looks like Microsoft will not do the cheap licence with a decent machine so basically want small schools, as it's the small schools this new direction will actually effect, to either purchase cheap useless laptops or pay more for a full licence. GREAT THANKS MICROSOFT for looking after the smaller schools.

Sorry for the delay. These are the group policies I use at all my schools that should help with your issue. Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System/Logon - Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = Enabled System/Scripts - Run logon scripts synchronously = Enabled System/Scripts - Run startup scripts asynchronously = Enabled

Google Apps for Ed is free. Obviously has document creation, Google Sites, Google forums, Blogs etc and also comes with Google Classroom which is a method for teachers to hand out work and then mark it. You will also get to control Chrome browser, Chromebooks etc all under the same account. EDIT: will also have Play Store for Education (or whatever it's called) so you can also choose the type of apps that get listed on any Android devices.

I was always under the assumption that you should not run cat5 outside due to lightning / fire issues. Is this not the case.
