I can't speak for Leicestershire but I know that several years ago Notts LEA would only allow access to certain systems (mainly financial) through an "approved link". One of the other schools had to have a separate BT line installed for this when they ditched EMBC and went to NTL.

If you carefully remove the front of the fibre panel you should see where the cable itself has been passed through a gland at the back. This should have then been stripped to expose the individual cores and you will be able to see how many have been connected and if all of the available cores have been connected. Hopefully there will also be some details on the outer sheathing to tell you the exact specification of the cable. The details on here will determine what type of cable but in most cases I would expect it to be multi-mode fibre* as this is designed to carry multiple data streams and is therefore more likely to be used within a building (unlike single mode which carries one data stream but over a longer distance). As to the speed, this is determined by the equipment at each end. * Should have said, this is normally indicated by 50/125 or 62.5/125, the first number indicating the diameter of the fibre's optical core in microns (thousandth of a millimetre).

We tend to buy Dell 380s or 780s and you can definitely install XP on those. If you go down that route let me know as I have loads of Dell specific XP discs and I don't think they have the bloatware on, just the OS - I'll happily stick a few in the post for you.

I tend to use compatibles for toners and genuines for inkjet cartridges, the latter because of the area they are used in so it's important that they produce good quality prints (plus they don't have a high usage). IME Delacamp, Longbow and Xinia cartridges have always been reliable and any faulty items replaced very quickly.

I have an Optiplex 745 here for exactly that - ESXi installed to put VM's on purely for testing, development, etc. You can actually stick 8GB of memory in them as well (4 x 2GB).

Ask them if they have two separate IP ranges assigned for the school and if so what the details are. Although we do not have a separate admin network anymore the IP range still exists so the router has 2 distinct ranges and 2 default gateway addresses.
