every time I speak to a builder about drilling though my floor to run cables they always ask me if there are services there, well I don't know I say, Your the builder, otherwise i'd do it myself!. I've now reached the stage where I don't think i'm going to persuade any of them to do the job, so I phoned an Aerial chap who suggested using the pvc fittings from a washing machine vent. Any suggestions anyone? or does anyone know of a diy kit I could fit myself? Cheers handygeeks!

I hate the use of IT manager, it makes it sound like your the computer god. In this day and age the job an IT manager usually does is closer to ICT Services, seeing as we have responsibility for anything with a plug and get involved with other departments. An IT manager should be someone with basic computing skills and skills surrounding the industry they are in. I find that staff that have been educated with modern technology are a little easier to work with than those who haven't and are less prone to disconnected blue sky thinking. I find it an advantage that I did A levels and my degree with teachers who were able to show good practise ( and experience some awful examples too). I think the role will become more about consulting, NM's lost overall power a long time ago. Now they need to meet demand from various parties wielding various devices, a modern NM should have decent underlying knowledge and the ability to learn quickly and have quick access to knowledge.

I think the edugeek seal of approval would be a good thing, Maybe yearly awards or maybe some sort of consumer award that relevant companies could display?. Maybe people could vote on suppliers or business and if they get 75% positive feedback they get an award for a year verifying that people have been happy with the service/knowledge etc.

I agree with that but I think RM used to aim at where schools didn't have ICT input into strategic decisions and they could send along a salesman to recommend a product ( Gp's too hard sir? I agree, here, have CC! ). They also spent a lot of time trying to persuade teachers that RM was ICT in schools ( Vacuum, hoover)

our ICT teacher often shows this clown when he hasn't done any lesson planning, The kids all sit there wondering what he's actually saying because as a collection of words they all make sense but the sentences are nonsensical!

The issue with RM is that they often provided ICT services that helped fulfil the role now filled by co-ordinators and techs onsite. Once upon a time RM were there as the playthings of a Head or a part time ICT tech who didn't want go get their hands dirty. With BSF most schools now have people in house so the need for the services RM provide are simply dwindling. They can no longer charge a premium for their products or services as they are no longer the best out there and don't have the dependency they could once command.

For reasons beyond my control it appears that some of our staff will be getting the gift of an ipad. It will be largely useless to them other than they wont need to remember that pesky windows password as I know diddly all about teaching/using/playing with Ipads. So, Can anyone point in the direction of which hardware/training I should be requesting/fiddling with to get upto speed and maybe provide some services to these dear dear machines?. I've had alook at RM and neos for training, but am open to all ideas and any books that anyone can recommend

Where are you located?

We don't supply laptops here, We don't have the budget to. We have some old laptops out with staff members who periodically bring it in to me and demand a new one but they get sent away. It's a shame that we can't/don't run an optional purchase program. We'd provide all the main infrastructure then if staff want a laptop we recommend and buy in bulk and provide then they cough up.
