Is it just me or when they have this sort of attitude the best thing you can do is not spend the money on being safe and legal but spend it on worthless gadgets that make the teachers happy. Makes your life easier if the staff are all running round with shiney and happy. Make sure head knows you've advised that its illegal though. My predessor did exactly the same, no licenses, no new computers as he couldn't be bothered with tendering. But he did issue laptops and installed large screen tvs on every wall he could and dished out the wep key to every man and his dog so was universally loved whilst i'm the b*stard who spent the money on licences and fixing the gaping network holes.

There is no technological solution to this, Tell deputy head they can either endorse extended desktop and arrange training and support or arrange training and support on how to use a projector ( freeze/pause/blank button or not turning it on until the lesson is ready to start.

Have you spoken to the onsite tech about this? If there is one.

Thanks @Steve21 Ideally if I could limit it to just browsing the internet it means I don't have to faff around with finding/deploying/buying/maintaining software and it helps clarify the exact use of the devices.

Can anyone recommend a solution that would allow the kids to pick up a device ( no logon, that takes time!) and can browse the internet? . Some sort of MDM or configuration tool to lock them down would be ideal but not essential. Apologies for the lazy post but I know some of you will have the done the relevant legwork and will have found top notch solutions!

This exactly. You can tell because its always this weeks edition of click on IPlayer, its not even one tahts being recorded on our media centre and archived as useful . Don't get me started on the fact its 25 mins and the lesson is 45!

Depends if your on the teaching equalvent of edugeek, or subscribe to content websites as our teachers do. Then its just find lesson, download lesson, do lesson, go home. Great example of this is our lead ICT teacher, every time he's off the students get shown that weeks click on Iplayer.

I think everyone is to an extent, its the cross over between vocation and academia. Most of us have teachers that are barely able to grasp the basics mascaraing in front of the students teaching them bad practise and not setting a good example. The important thing to remember is how people view ICT as a subject, you feel like the kids aren't learning the way they should and that bugs you. Unfortunately the view from the teaching staff is probably a lot more relaxed. They don't view this change as significant and don't wish to invest in it. They can give the kids the work sheets, you'll sort the rest and at the end of the day its another lesson delivered where the teacher isn't an expert in the subject but they have delivered some content to the students. Key thing to remember is that although you , I and many of the 'geeks know this isn't ideal the teaching staff will be happy and ultimately its their problem. Let them deal with it. You'll fight a losing battle trying to improve teaching standards and you'll end up on the dart board next to Gove should you take an interest and try to change things.

There's no way I'd turn the servers off for a period, they are designed to run constantly and two weeks off would risk both the hardware and software ( think of the updates rush if nothing else!). Only solution is to get the air con back on ASAP or move the equipment.
