Ah yeah, we don't use ours for amplification in the hall because of the feedback issue; the only way you can do that is with a directed mic i.e. a standard mic, be it handheld & wireless or on a stand. If you want to record/stream, boundary mics; if you want to hear the kids better, maybe they'll just have to learn to pass a mic around. Not everything is a technical problem.

To give you an idea of how good the boundary mics are: we have them installed because we can't quite fit everyone into our main hall, so we overspill into the gym and stream video and audio down there for big events (e.g. pantomimes). You can hear what's going on more clearly in the gym than you can in the main hall where they're actually performing.

Acoustic Boundary Mics We have two of these on our lighting rig, mounted to a couple of bits of MDF and hung up by thick cable ties a couple of metres in front of where performances/assemblies are done (about a quarter of the way back in the hall). Couple of XLR cables feed back down to a USB mixing desk and from there can be recorded or streamed via VLC. You would be amazed how clearly they pick up any spoken conversation in front of them. They are exactly the tool for the job--tucked out the way & pick up anything in front of them. Can't remember exactly what we have but it's something like this. Our hall is pretty big - holds around 800 kids, we're a big secondary, so they should work for you.

I was all for it when I thought all it had done is reskin my GMail and give me a cool little rebel pilot in Maps for Street View, but then I read so that's me dragged back to default, then. I actually use my Google calendar, so having it spammed would be a bit irritating.

Terminator: Genisys: enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to. I love the two Terminator films (THERE WAS NEVER A 3 OR 4 SHUSH YOUR DIRTY MOUTH) but a lot of reviews had been a bit indifferent to it. So I went in with low expectations, and was delighted to find the action was great, there was lots of humour, Daenarys wasn't rubbish (actually quite a good impression of Linda Hamilton) and the plot was fine, with the usual time-travel caveat of don't-think-too-hard; nothing too glaring though. I would go as far as to say Terminator: Genisys was a better sequel to Terminator 2 than Jurassic World was to Jurassic Park. Certainly more enjoyable to this nerd. San Andreas: cheesy earthquake disaster movie starting The Rock. C'mon, you know exactly what you're expecting from that description. I'm only here to tell you it meets all of those expectations in a very entertaining fashion, and sometimes, that's all you really want from a film

Day 1, Sunday 4pm: usual argument about plugging in to the master socket. Know full well the conversation won't progress until I do this. "Ok now we'll test for 24 hours..." ARGH. Promises to call back around the same time tomorrow. I ask for it to be between 5 & 6pm instead as I'll driving back from work at 4pm. Agreed and booked. Day 2, Monday 4pm: missed call from BT. FFS. 5pm: I phone them and--incredibly--get someone useful. He looks at the logs and says "oh yes, I can see the problems with your service" OH THANK YOU WHY DIDN'T THE FIRST BLOKE JUST CHECK THOSE LOGS THEN IF YOU HAVE THEM FFS Problem needs to be escalated to second line. Call arranged for Tuesday 5-7pm. Day 3, Tuesday 5pm: I turn up at my in-laws' house, ready for the phone call. I've been pretending to be my Father in Law because it's just easier. I watch Pointless. 6pm: I watch the news. 7pm: I find myself stuck watching Eastenders. I try to phone them, with my phone set to allow call waiting. 8pm: after 45 minutes on hold, and having finished my apple-pie-and-custard, and even gone to the toilet and still not prompted a phone call, which is usually a very reliable method of triggering it, I give up and go home for my tea. 8:20pm: BT man rings the in-laws while I'm at home eating my jacket potato and cheesy beans. Mother-in-law phones me after he hangs up to conduct tests. I abandon my dinner half eaten and race round there as fast as I can, expecting him to phone back any minute. I wait ten more minutes before he does. 8:40pm: BT finally agree that there is a fault in the line, as evidenced by the 2.5Mbps broadband dropping out continually and the hissing phone line they've been talking to me on, and tell me they'll send an engineer out. At last! I could have told them that 52 hours ago. I go home. The cat has eaten my cheesy beans.

Fine in Lincolnshire last night, and I was procrastinating online for hours when I should have been writing. I do hate BT. Took me three days of phone calls before they'd commit to sending an engineer to fix my in-laws' obviously-broken phone line.

I might be missing something here, but all we do is: 1) On the print server, right click the printer and choose Printer Properties 2) Advanced Tab 3) Printing defaults 4) Set everything here Nowt to do with PaperCut or PCounter, just bog standard Windows stuff. If you want to remove the possibility of colour altogether, then you'll need some fanciness involved. We do it using PCounter because that's what we have; it converts any print job from a student to greyscale.

I'd wait. 770 -> 970 is only a single generation (800 was mobile only) so you'll get something like 30-40% improvement, which isn't huge enough for the investment. Compare here: GPU 2014 Benchmarks - Compare Products on AnandTech If you want to double your performance, which is the rule of thumb I tend to go for, the 980 nearly gets you there depending on the game (GPU 2014 Benchmarks - Compare Products on AnandTech), but you need at least a 980Ti to be certain of that doubling (compared here using the 680 as a stand in for the 770, as the 770 was a rebranded and slightly-better-clocked 680: GPU 2015 Benchmarks - Compare Products on AnandTech) Given that even the 980 starts at about £370, I'd say it's not worth it. Nothing wrong with a 770 at all. What resolution is your monitor? wait ignore me you said 4k, and @LosOjos has covered that topic below. 4k is a struggle even for high end dual setups at the moment.

You can enforce a policy with a right click, so that it takes precedence, but as @Oaktech says you shouldn't, because if you're setting and then overriding and then overriding and then... you're only slowing logins down unnecessarily and making it complicated & confusing for you to administer. Organise with OUs and apply GPOs at the the correct level.

Ours is much simpler. It just needs to be a page that loads fast and has useful things on it. About the cleverest thing it does is auto-submit a search when you paste into the two fields. If we need to get a message out, there's a (currently hidden) box above the Google search with nice red text. Useful when something has broken. And when it's a National Day, it's easily themed

I've finally gotten my new website looking good enough and doing everything I need it to for now, thanks to them what piped up with their thoughts, so I'm telling everyone about it now I don't want to spam here every time something happens with my writing--as exciting as it is to me, a lot of you will get fed up of me prattling on about it on what is a tech support forum, not a writing forum--so if you want to keep up, there are (currently) three options: MattDovey.com -- where I'll post full stories as and when I can (i.e. I give up on submitting them, or their exclusivity expires) and random longform guff in the blog that I double-promise-triple-padlock-cast-iron-guarantee will not abandon this time the same way I've abandoned all my earlier blogs. A Facebook page set up for the purpose, which I'll basically use as an RSS feed for the site. The new Twitter account I've bravely set up, @MattDoveyWriter, that I am absolutely certain will not result in a massive amount of procrastination and time wasting when I should be writing. There's a story up on the site now, Elm & Sorrow, if you want to pass twenty minutes on a Friday afternoon. So, if you're thusly inclined, and enjoy reading the odd science fiction or fantasy short story, I'd be awfully grateful if you'd bookmark/like/follow as appropriate <3

Netgear is horrible. If budget is tight (when isn't it?) then the HP A5120's are also excellent. We use them here in major cabs, you can stack them if necessary for redundancy/expansion (as with the 5800), PoE models are available, all Layer 3. About £1700ish ex VAT, though that price is a couple of years out of date now. Comware, so same flexibility with SFPs as the A5800.

Same here (although it was Mike at SwitchShop who advised us ) and they've not skipped a beat in 3½ years. Worked out a decent chunk cheaper than the 5406zl and allowed us to re-use our existing 3COM SFPs; they should work with either 3COM or HP SFPs if you have them lying around.
