I love that memo. 3 of the 4 things you need to factor in costs for are either free (2 x email through Office 365) or included in the EES licensing schools are probably using anyway (anti-virus). Web filtering isn't cheap, no, but the Smoothwall I have on site is orders of magnitude more competent and capable than anything I ever saw from an RBC. And then oh no, you might lose access to services you've not only never used, but probably never even knew existed, and most of them have free public alternatives anyway! As for VOIP telephony... I'm pretty sure people outside education use that, and more people than LGfL can support it. It just looks desperate, doesn't it?

Thanks. I don't know if I'll ever get into novels--I mean, I'd like to, there's no career in short fiction alone--but it's still a few years off at least. And even then, if I learn enough, make the time, and write something worthwhile, it still takes a large dollop of luck to get anywhere, so I'll take all the good wishes i can get. Probably not a coincidence that 2006 is about the time I finished my web design degree and stopped keeping up with changes in the field any expansion on what it is that makes you think that, though? Easy to read is definitely the main concern though--function over form, and all that. And from a form perspective, well, writers' websites are not usually very pretty, so I only really need to be good enough. Favourite worst example: what George RR Martin used to have.

I didn't want it to jump about with every page load, but stay fairly consistent as you browsed, only changing as required for a story. I figure most people won't open it in two browsers at once to notice I take it you mean that the big text is Matt Dovey on every page, but on a story page that shifts to the top alongside the top links? (The top links, btw, should be consistent on every page, so if you mean that they change then let me know). It's because my name is the most important thing on the page--not being arrogant, I mean from a marketing perspective--except on a story page, where the title becomes more important, but I still need my name to appear somewhere. I didn't think blog post titles were important enough to warrant the huge text up the top, and a giant Home always looks a bit cheesy, I think.

I've designed it so I can set a mood-appropriate background for a story, and the style will stick from the point you load a story until you load a new one. If you've not yet got a style (i.e. you land first on a page where no style is set), it chooses randomly from those available. Those two styles--green and rain--will follow you round the site now, until you load the story at which point it will be set to an autumn theme. After that point, you'll be stuck on autumn, because there's no other story to force the style to something new.

As I keep on mentioning, I done gone won a proper fancy writin' contest for being good at putting words down and stuff like that, so it's time I had a website for my writing. Because I am a nerd I couldn't possibly just install Wordpress, pick a theme and away I go; no, I have to build the whole bloody thing from scratch, don't I, because I do love to faff. The background image is chosen randomly from half a dozen designs, so if there's one you don't like, let me know which one you got. For networking, we've always gone with SwitchShop, and their advice & support has been utterly superb. Plus they send a bar of Dairy Milk to you at Easter, so well worth being on their mailing list. They're vendor agnostic, so they'll talk you through any system; we just went with UniFi through them as it was about half the price of Ruckus and good enough for our purposes (that is, Ruckus is better, but we didn't need something that good).

Not overly surprised it's come to this; like the networking giants missing the boat on wireless and buying their way in (HP with Meru, Cisco with Meraki etc.), the hard drive giants missed the SSD boat and need to buy in now. I can see Seagate buying Kingston or Plextor (Toshiba already own OCZ) within the year.

That works for me. All this talk about the TMO couldn't intervene in the knock-on/offside debacle... no, but he could intervene in the case of foul play, i.e. the massively late "tackle" (pronounced "shoulder barge") on Stuart Hogg just before that line out, couldn't he? Dumb wireless is like having a bunch of private tutors teaching a group of kids - they're going to clash on what they tell kids (interference), you've got to talk to them all individually if anything changes and it'd be impossible to organise anything (no central management), what one tutor teaches might not be compatible with another tutors curriculum (no roaming) and you've got no visibility over how good a job they're doing. A managed system is like a school - everyone is organised (central management) and you can get a message out to the staff body easily, everyone is working together on the same curriculum which makes it easy to move between classes (roaming), and the service provided is ultimately much more professional and much less frustrating for the providers and recipients alike. Cons: it's a bit of a stretched metaphor. Pros: it'll butter 'em up a treat.

I am absolutely heartbroken for the Scottish Craig Joubert should be ashamed. It was never a yellow for deliberate knock on, it shouldn't have been a penalty at the end, and he should have had the guts to stand up to his mistakes and shakes the players' hands instead of sprinting off the pitch with his shame chasing him. The Welsh gave it their everything, the Argentinians came from nowhere (was honestly expecting Ireland in the semis), and the Kiwis were incredible. When even props are finding gaps, you're more or less unstoppable. These quarters have shown just how far off the mark English rugby is. We are miles behind where the other home nations teams are in how we play. Six Nations is going to be painful to watch in a white jersey! I can see a Kiwi v Wallabies final. I think the Aussies were shaken badly by yesterday, but they played much better in the group stage than the Kiwis did.
