what about sharepoint or some thing like alfresco or atrium? Yuo can share the files directly over the web then via http/ https and all the end user needs is a web browser. Job done.

you won;t need wine for royalTS or vnc viewer as you can use the vinagre system built into ubuntu/ gnome.

yeap it's that easy. Just make sure that when you install Ubuntu you have separate / and /home partitions to make them easier to manage and allow a simpler reinstall should you need to in the future.

The avi files should play in VLC. Pretty much everything palys in VLC. But Ubuntu will also prompt you to install the right codec if if can't find the one it needs. Change to single boot isn't hard, you reformat and reinstall or delete windows and use gparted to grow your disks into the space. Be careful with relying on Wine though. It's great but often doesn't work or perform well. Guild Wars for instance could well take a performance hit and if your into pc gaming then Wine will likely drive you nuts. You can also ways install virtualbox with a windows install in it for when you really must use windows. It's fine for 2d stuff and the 3d drivers are getting better all the time.

how about I don't know much apache therefore I will try to learn more? From talking to other Moodle admins and personal experience you'll going to find that you hit a brick wall with support. SSO being a prime example, I used docs on moodle.org with relates to windows and apache and got it working without a hitch.

Personnally I use apache in Windows. I've a lot of stories of people hitting problems when they try to scale IIS and Moodle

Check your DC log for errors. Yuo could be that your sso settings in moodle are wrong (wrong context etc)

can you go to server>php info on Moodle and check the version of PHP you have. Also which version of moodle are you running?

Have you added the moodle url to the internet zone in IE?

You'll need to turn error reporting on in your php.ini. This should show up the error for you and let you work on it. Also if your using IE try Firefox as this can sometimes show different errors.

You could probably have the exports happen automatically from any system assuming that you have access to the databases. As Moodle is open source it makes this part reletivly easy. You would however need someone who knows their way around SQL and code.

we had problems getting phpmotion to work right and so ended up with vshare running on an ubuntu box and it's working really well for us so far

Honeycomb is available for the honeycomb SDK and I have had a play. Problem is it runs very slow in the emulator and the mouse really isn't the best way to use it. But it does look like honeycomb will be very cool and with people like asus making tablets for it should be better priced then the ipad as well. alternatively wait for windows 8 which will have an arm variant - you might have to wait some time though

We use vshare for hosting videos and are looking at mahara for portfoliios, forums and blogs. Vshare is about $20 and mahara is free. Server space is a bit of a how long is a piece of string type question. it depends how much you use it.

we've been playing with bigbluebutton and it's really good. it will allow webcam conferencing with upto around 25 webcams at a time (hardware allowing). it's also got voip, screen sharing, text chat and presentation abilities

if staff won't bother using the VLE why will they bother using the intranet? Then it will fail as a VLE. Aslo if staff won't access email or the VLE why will they access the intranet? With single sign implemented staff won't have to login to a vle - it will just do it automatically for them it will have a search function though. if it's well designed and laid out there is no reason why a course can't be set up as a 'staff course' containing all the content an Intranet can contain. Also because it won't require anyone to know html then admin staff etc will be able to update content on it. - Likewise this is why a CMS is always better then something knocked up in html Bear in mind that an intranet with content that doesn't change is dead in the water as people won't look at it. True but there are ways to make internet connections more resilient. Alternativly host your own moodle VLE
