  1. Even with intergration drivers installed Hyper-V is not ideal for Windows XP - Windows 7 runs much better on it but if you need some kind of VDI setup consider XenServer.
  2. Have you tried running group policy modeling in your active directory to see what is being applied to the server in question?
  3. Moodle again - very flexiable platform, free and if you have the know how you can make it look however you want it to.
  4. What accualy happens when you try to install the application? I'd renable UAC because if you don't have enough permissions to install the application it'll pop up and ask for a admin account.
  5. Yep - snap shotting a DC is a bad idea in any situation - theres a Microsoft KB article about it infact - Things to consider when you host Active Directory domain controllers in virtual hosting environments
  6. Hi all, I've been playing around with TMG 2010 inside a VM as looking at it as a free alternative to LEA websense (we have Vol licence) when they pull the free plug next year but also looking at it for replacing the last component of Ranger that we use (web montoring). As far as I understand SP1 of TMG 2010 includes a user web tracking/reporting feature and although I can find where the report is I can't seem to get the user data to be recorded on the server. I've setup a basic 'Web Access Policy' which blocks access to the nastys and allows to everything else but have no clue where to go from there. Furthermore am I correct in thinking that TMG could be setup as a transparent proxy if I were to set it up as a server with two network points (one to internal and one to external (the web) connections)? Thanks! James
  7. No doubt there Problem is I know people like this and can see this happening allll to easily!
  8. I think you may of jumped the gun a bit by the sounds of it and not done enough research on your methods of VMing desktops. We are doing the same here over the holiday using Kaviza VDI running on Citrix XenServer (going to change over to Hyper-V for Win7 when we move over to it a little later). By the sounds of it you have got a pretty decent server that should support ~30 clients (maybe a little more) but no real mangement software to run the clients from. Some options which you might want to consider are- Citrix XenDesktop Kaviza (what we are going to be using which uses the Citrix protocol) Microsoft VDI with a TS gateway Each of these will provide software for the rapid provisioning and assignment of desktops to your users. Most of the time with VDI you will be connecting to your virtual desktops from a Thin Client device (HP/Wyse/10zig all do Thin Clients) with a limited OS - one person mentioned Thin Station which works but is outside of my ablities. All the same if you want a decent VDI setup you are going to need some software managing it in the background or all you will of done is obtained a powerful server to host desktops that might as well be running on conventional PCs.
  9. Real or made up?
  10. Is it a RM network (CC3/4) because even those run with offline files?
  11. In the grand world if this application were to go offline for 10 minutes while you move the dongle from one server to another would it dramticly effect users?
  12. Our LEA Websense servers have Squid proxy on them - no complaints to say about them.
  13. Just tried changing over to TKIP and did a ipconfig /renew and by chance saw a new error message- 'An error occourred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.'
  14. Could you let us know what Model number your CPU is? Also have you had a look through your BIOS - there maybe some weird setting in there which needs to be enabled for 64bit to work.
  15. Hi all, Until now we have been using WPA2-PSK for our wireless keys with each user being assigned an individual key to their notebook. Recently however we have deployed WPA2-802.1x provided by Windows Server 2008 NPS to allow computers to join the sites Wi-Fi using the machine credentials. Many computers connect perfectly however a number (and it appears to be randomly affecting notebook of all manufactures and OSes (XP/7)) fail to obtain a IP address from DHCP and end up with a local IP address (e.g. 192.168.*.*). The machines appear to be authenticating correctly as they appear as success messages in the NPS logs. All PCs have been told to obtain IP addresses form DHCP with no statically assigned IP/DNS settings on the affected PCs. Our conventional WPA2-PSK wireless appears to be working normally. An example of the error message that I see on one of the PCs that is affected would be- ‘Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address xxxxx. The IP address being used is 169.254.161.168.’ Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
  16. I've got a OCZ Vertex II in my notebook and are loving every moment of it - boot up and resume from hybernate is fast and responsive and a 120GB drive will only set you back ~£180.
  17. The Microsoft Lics for Server 2k8 R2 when running in VMs are fine reguardless of which hypervisior you use (Hyper-V or ESXi) More here - Microsoft Volume Licensing - Microsoft Licensing for Virtualization
  18. We've been playing around with 10zig thin clients for some time - the current quote is around £195 per thin client which Citrix HDX compatiblity. The price for HP/Wyse (other big names) clients are tones more but when you look at the smaller guys 10zig/Axel you can get clients for alot less because they specalise in that field.
  19. The school libary gets PC Pro - it gets sent to the IT Office for a quick browse then we send it down to the libary for the students.
  20. I tried WordPress on streamline net once (same setup as Joomla! with PHP/MySql) - had quite a few (but intermittant) problems (almost like the database wasn't being connected to all the time). Quickly moved to UKWSD.
  21. Our intranet runs off a dedicated Server 2008 R2 VM - we use it for everything thats web based and internal to the school (Booking System/SharePoint/Internal Homepage) - its not free by any means but IIS does give you a great amount of flexiablity and can be used to allow students to setup their own internal websites using FTP Folder Isolation.
  22. UKWSD are the guys I go with - UK servers great service and Linux based. Price is a little more than you might pay for some others but if he is looking to expand his site and needs great uptime then he should take a look.
  23. Theres a few articles on here about this already - maybe try a search or two on 'dream networks' or 'ideal networks'.
  24. I think you should be more looking at a propper digital signage setup - Xibo (first name in google) might be a good place to start looking.
  25. Sorry was refering to iOS devices - Android is highly exempt.
