Adding a server to domain and replication
jamesfed replied to marsdenprimary's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Just domain join the server add the AD roles to it run the AD setup and boom thatll be it replicating away. If you are a Primary (I take that from your display name) I wouldn't say any more than 2 hours from start to finish. Personaly though if you can break away from Server 2003 and go with 2008 R2 - it will add an extra step (AD prep) but might as well take advantage of the newer tech.- 8 replies

Hi all, An extreem long shot but does anyone have any desk phones they are getting rid of that are compatible with Lync 2010 (OCS 2007)? We are happily testing our potential new VoIP phone system but the upfront cost of the phones is proving a little excessive (even when using basic USB phones) as such if anyone has any that they would be happy to part (we could pay a reasonable amount) with do let me know A great many thanks! James

Remote Access to files without public IP address
jamesfed replied to Admiral208's topic in How do you do....it?
Give it another go and give them a kick for me Our LEA has said no more than 4 public IP v4 addys until they can move to IP v6 and we use one for our VPN and the other for HAP+ both were setup for free with a 5 day SLA. If you get it setup right then the VPN would be of massive use to all of your staff - within one day we had 42 out of 90 staff signed up and using it and one week later that was up to 60. -
Remote Access to files without public IP address
jamesfed replied to Admiral208's topic in How do you do....it?
Your LEA/Broadband provider will be able to provide you with a public IP/required DNS setup so I'd say why try to make something complicated when it can be so simple! If your LEA is one of those that 'batterns down the hatches' on any kind of public IP then give them a kick from your SMT. -
It appears as a single drive - essentialy the SSD component caches the most used files on the SSD (so Windows OS and common applications) then the HDD component is left to do file storage (photos/ect).

Not that its got a DVD drive but they are out there - Vostro V130 Laptop Details | Dell UK Even if the cost between 320 and 500Gb is £20 (which it is for the above link) then thats £20 of public money you could be saving (something which we take very seriously where I work). If 2Gb is enough to run Windows 7 well enough with plenty of open programs (and I use Photoshop CS2 on my laptop with 2Gb and Windows 7 with no problems) then 4Gb would be more than ample to run Windows 8 (which as I understand will be no more intensive than 7). Either way the differance between 4Gb and 8Gb is £60 - add that to your £20 on the HDD and you have £80 per machine to spend on solid states instead which will give you more of a real world boost.

IE8 - the only real difference between the two is the HTML5 and GPU rendering components. Having said that there are a number of other changes but these are the ones that stand out for me.

Some will say Visulisers are a lot more than just a webcam on a stick but personaly they are just a webcam on a stick..... We've had staff make good use of webcams before having them stuck to walls and other such things as a cheap replacement to visulisers.

I don't know about your school but we find our staff rarely use more than 60Gb of hard drive space (offline files ect) even when keeping personal stuff on the machines so 500Gb might be a bit over the top (unless you have the need) and could be a good place to save a few £s. Simlarly we haven't issued more than 2 or 3 Gb of RAM in any notebook either - so unless your guys are doing some serious image editing or have a billion applications open at the same time its another good place to save on the RAM. Personaly if you want to future proof have a look at Solid State Disks instead - so much faster (than any HDD/massive amount of RAM combo) and you get the wonderful world of no moving parts.

remote and USB access for pupils
jamesfed replied to fafster's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Have a look at Home Access Plus+ (its on here under EduGeek projects) this will allow you to setup home access to your home drives and file shares over the web. As far as USB sticks go its all fully allowed here - the our AV is set to scan on access and can't say we've had any problems come in from USB sticks in quite some time. -
Have a look at Lync 2010 - its got IM and a Remote Desktop control thingy built in. We're currently looking at it from a VoIP point of view but it could work for you without needing to setup that as well.

Some kind of faulty DNS entry if you have multiple servers looking after DNS?
-
We've got it running network wide here - I'll check up on how its done tomorrow.
-
I'd say build your own - get a large enough case with 120mm exuhast fan and then hook it up to a fan speed controler and boom your away. Something like one of the new AMD Fusion E-350 processors or a Intel Atom should be quiet enough and then just use a RAID card of your choosing. Should end up much cheaper than anything HP or Dell can offer you.

MRBS for room booking - MRBS: Introduction free and easy enough to setup - you can intergrate it with AD for single sign on as well as having compleatly custom timetables.

Hi all, Were looking to get started on the Lync 2010 VoIP world and was wondering if anyone could let me know who they've used as their SIP provider? Cheers! James

Ubuntu Server slows to halt when multiple users log in.
jamesfed replied to burgemaster's topic in *nix
Not that its a solution to your problem (not even a work around) but have you considered getting an install of Windows Server on your DL380 and run WordPress off of IIS? All our sites here are hosted on IIS7.5 (a few internal WordPress installs and HAP+) and it works a real treat. Not that I'm looking to bring up a discussion about this but it could be the easy way out if you have a lic spare... -
You might want to take a look at this - Configuring FTP 7.5 User Isolation : FTP 7 for IIS 7 : Publishing Content to Web Sites : The Official Microsoft IIS Site Would allow you to host a IIS site on one of your servers and then provide each user with their own FTP account. The charm of it all is that it uses AD details to authenticate the users and all you need do is bulk create a set of folders with your students usernames.
