Sad news - slow reply as I've been away. It does seem a long time ago since we were doing the new group thing - they seem to be mostly dead now - even the "hooky" ones - shame as I preferred them to proprietary forums and FB groups. Ian seemed a nice chap on the brief occasion I met him - very sad to hear of his passing.

The view that the BBC has some in built leftie bias always puzzles me somewhat - their (until recently) main serious political interviewer (Paxman) is a Tory and was approached to run as a Tory Mayor of London candidate, Nick Robinson (chief political editor) was President of the Oxford Universiry Conservative Association, Michael Grade (former DG) sits as a Tory in the Lords - to me they always seem (irritatingly) balanced. And Cam - before you nip off to the continent - give a thought to what your status might be if the UK decides to withdraw from the EU - I should think that'll be a right old mess. My mate who is "off grid" in Brittany is starting to be concerned that it might affect his life adversely, should we leave!

With respect - that's nonsense - Brown sold the gold in the 1990s, not as an answer to the banking collapse. Probably not a good idea - but the money wasn't just spent, but reinvested in foreign currency "instruments". I believe Labour should have done more to restrain the banks irresponsible actions - but to be fair the Tories were shouting for an even more relaxed regulatory system at the time. Leaving the banks to fail would have been catastrophic for most people - as salaries paid through the banks would have just stopped and any savings would have been forfeit - not a pretty thought...The economy was actually growing quite nicely in 2010 until Osborne started his austerity drive which put the mockers on any growth. Its worth bearing in mind that the Tories have failed in all of their financial plans in the previous 5 years and have borrowed more money than the combined total of all the Labour governments ever!

I should think you could bodge a cheap rack server with hot swappable drives to function like that - or even an old PC as long as the network connection is fast and theres not too much data

You can still have a rack mounted tape unit if you want, or removeable hard drives, or cloud, or remote backup to a partner school etc
