I left school in 1977 - I did an optional extra Computer Programming course where we filled in OMR cards with 2B pencils and then cycled to the local tech with them and returned for a print out the next week. Went off to college to do Industrial Engineering and had a few brushes with the Teletype consoles and 200 baud acoustic couplers, wrote a Space Invaders type thing that printed off each iteration of action on a band printer! Alas by graduation the industry I had studied (steel & coal) had mostly gone. Had a ZX81 and Spectrum to play around with then went back to college to do a post grad conversion to Unix & C programming - never looked back - moved to PCs and Novell in the 1990s and then MS in the early 2000s

My first bought PC was from Stak Trading in Rugby A 486SX and well over £2k - heck of a lot of cash for me at the time

I bought some Time PCs and one user complained that it smelt when it was running - on opening it up - it had a half eaten sandwich inside!

Its just great not having to shave. Grew mine when my son was a baby (he's 19 now) and I was too tired and boggle-eyed to waste 5 minutes of sleep to keep clean shaven and never gone back - just a trim every 10-15 days.

Do you suspect a bit of "exaggeration"? We used to have terrible trouble with one teacher who swore blind that everything ran slow and took "minutes to open" - in the end I had to do screen caps of everything working fine to prove to SMT that it was all working as it should! When he left, calls to the Helpdesk reduced by nearly 50% (not an exaggeration!)

Yeah - he's going for a PC with RAID 5 - which is better than nothing - some sort of unlimited cloud storage would be ideal - but I guess TBs of files can be quite expensive - I'll be having a look for him

Yeah - was trying to avoid that - I reckon on a rough average of 3-5 mins a disk, you're looking at a full day's work for each 100 disks - I'm not sure you could bribe enough to keep a kid at that for maybe the whole Easter hols without a break!

I've been chatting to a friend of a friend who is a semi pro photographer (he does weddings and all that sort of stuff as well as his own arty stuff) and for most of the time he has archived the photos onto a mix of CDs and DVDs (I know I know!) Now he wants to (due to some marital disharmony about the amount of space these are taking) transfer everything from those media onto a PC fitted with a load of drive space. There are literally 100s (if not 1000s) of disks full of pics and video clips - does anyone here know of a bit of kit that can automatically transfer the data in biggish batches? As ever he doesn't want to cough a lot of cash - so a hire facility would be good. I had a google but couldn't see anything suitable - maybe someone here has done a similar thing?
