Anyway to cap bandwidth speeds at home?
SpuffMonkey replied to abillybob's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Its pretty easy on the Draytek 2130 I've got - you just set the IP addresses and allow an Rx and Tx rate, you can limit total usage as well if you want -
Surely you still have to cough for the line charge though? I'm on VM too and its around £18 / month for me

This sounds really interesting - can anyone point me at some useful "How to start" guides? Thanks

Recommend me a new colour laser printer for home!

Thanks for the suggestions - I bought the Ricoh in the end and it arrived yesterday It works fine - but its a crazy world where the entire printer is cheaper than a single toner cartridge! Cheers -
I was only joking Alas - I'm so old that I joined during the previous entry system - so none of the stuff I did is relevant to qualification nowadays. To be honest - I've never found that membership was an asset when applying for jobs and I guess it probably won't be until some sort of accreditation is a mandatory requirement for leading IT projects - which I guess will be sometime never at this rate!

I'm not sure whether to be offended by that remark!

We just did the lad's room - roughly 3m x 4m - as stated - the carpet is as expensive as you want to pay - but a tip is not to use the shops recommended fitters - they tend to rip you off on the cost of gripper rods etc - I got a bloke in who was recommended on the local streetlife page and he charged £90 for the underlay, grippers, door bars and fitting - nice job too!

Bluetooth speaker for a classroom?

I Lidl the other week - they had ones built into a light fitting for use in a bathroom - pretty cool I thought -
Had my 50 - 70 upgrade weeks ago and its been very solid. Its worth bearing in mind that if you want to haggle about the price, its best to do this BEFORE you sign for the upgrade - as this is regarded as the start of a new 12 month agreement and you may get charged if you try and leave during it - which weakens your bargaining stance!

I don't think there should be any state schools that are run by religious organisations. I'm happy for all children to be educated ABOUT religion but not IN religion at school. France seem to get along OK with their laicite rules which protect people from the influences of religion (originally from the Catholic Church, but now other religions as well). You may remember the issue of France banning burquas in schools - and was portrayed over here as Islam bashing - but their viewpoint was that it was to protect vulnerable children from religious edict until they are old enough to make up their own minds - sounds fair enough to me. Whether it helps integration and social solidarity is another question all together, but I applaud the principle

Merry Christmas all - enjoy it while its there Dosbox - that phase is over so quickly and its such fun - my lad was late up sleeping off the night before - ah well...

I couldn't agree more - my Mum was a shop worker and without a Sunday close, we would never have seen her or she us, I'm not at all religious, but I feel strongly that there should be some space in our lives that isn't ruled by work and buying things. Nobody "needs" 24/7 opening - it may be more convenient to some people, but that's not a need, and I'm not at all convinced that it brings more money into shops - it would if you were open and all your competitors were closed, but not if you're all following the same hours - you can only spend your cash once.

I just said they were too expensive and was thinking of leaving - they dropped to about £45 and I said I never used the M+ TV package, so drop that off completely which dropped it to just over £40, then the bloke said would I still like the Freeview pack (M?) at no cost - I said yeah and they bunged me the Tivo - it seems ok, not great, but it comes with all the terrestrial catch up streaming channels which is handy for where it is as its fed over the cable rather than through the router which is in another room - I wouldn't pay for it, but ok for free. I guess they think that seeing all the stuff that I can't access will tempt me to cough for a bigger package - so its sort of a permanent advert - but I don't want 100s of channels of carp!
-
Yeah thats about what I pay - but I phoned up and moaned and got the 70MB upgrade early, the free calls at anytime phone package and the Freeview only TV with the Tivo PVR thrown in for free - a good mornings work!

You're usually better to switch off all the gubbins in the VM box and put a decent wifi router of your own behind it. My VM has been rock solid and just been upgraded to a solid 70meg while trimming £20 off the bill - bonus!

No me neither except for comic effect, for a short time the other members of the team had a MSc plus BCS and another post grad qual which slips my mind - we had a plate made up for the door in reprographics, but got told to take it down - can't imagine why ;-)

I am! And I know a few others on here are too. Not that I found it much use - but I quite like all the postnominal letters - it can shut up the teachers who insist on putting B.A. after their names on emails! Regards Spuffmonkey B.Sc. (Hons) MBCS CITP
