I would say that is a bit over the top for pupil email - and much depends on the quality of your AUP. To answer the original question - probably the easiest option to read all inbox folders is to give yourself admin rights so you can open their folders inside your outloook client. Failing that, reset passwords and log in to OWA.... It seems long-winded, but i've resorted to it before when I needed to fully investigate (i.e. look through sub-folders and sent / deleted items etc) You can also print and gather decent evidence that way etc.

Sorry about the lack of replies, I've been in meetings all day. @TheFopp - My understanding of Core auth is that their is a client bit of software required on each pc - which in our circumstance isn't too much of a problem (although less convinient obviously). @rob_f - Yep - tried all that. I've spoken to Chris a couple of times and he also said to try putting the addresses as exceptions which looked promising, but I'm still getting strange issues, lately with Moodle etc. I need to re-evaluate the whole config I think as some things just aren't working out how I want them. I am in the office for the whole of tomorrow (rare!) so will give one of you helpfull and knowledgeable people a call on the support line.

As a fairly new customer, I am seriously considering moving away from NTLM auth. It has proved to be much more hassle than it is worth. I've had issues with various sites (not least internal Exchange and Moodle access). I am assured that the other non-NTLM auth options don't have as many/any associated niggles, so may try core auth instead

Exchange 2010 with the correct ports opened up will do a lot of what you are looking for. Do a bit of searching on the feature list including Outlook Anywhere and UNC links in email

Don't worry GrumbleDook - wasn't taken as a prod! (Nice phrasing!) My previous post was a bit emotive and really only relating to the discussion about BECTA! I get it from the same places. In fact, it is an extension of the reason I signed up here a few years back. A resource like this with such diverse membership is perfect, as you get arguments (sometimes quite literally!) from all sides. I would partly agree with the highest priest comment. I don't see myself as the carbon copy of your definition. In my current role I have a high level of accountability, but make informed decisions and often make them as part of a wider consultation. Ultimately there has got to be someone who makes a decision though. (Of course, that doesn't mean every decision will be work out right, but at least it will be made for the right reason!) I have come across those who I think you are describing, and yes, know-it-alls who actually know very little can be infuriating! I have gone through a range of positions and always made sure that I never set myself up as a know-it-all (even though on certain topics I might "know a lot"). It is always much better to go in with a solid understanding, invite conversation and leave with a broader understanding. I think we are on the same path here... although I'll never agree to BECTA being anything more than "occasionally useful".

Every school and LA is different - but here, the answer to the above is "me". Any external agency who comes in with the attitude that they know better is wrong. They don't. They have advice to offer - if we want to take it, and then only if it works in the best interests of our students, staff and parents.

Personally, I think it should be cut even further. Pass any savings direct to LA or even better to schools who show initiative and want to push the bounderies of IT in Education.... I have never had a positive experience related to BECTA. Rather than help, I have found them to confuse (others, not me) and hinder (me, not others!) Without launching my own personal critique, I agree with pretty much everything said by Dos_Box!

If I was asked to investigate this, I would have to choose my response wording carefully. The issue is one of classroom management, not one of content filter ability.

You will probably have people discuss the differences between Virtual Learning Enviroment and Virtual Learning Platform, as the two aren't always the same product - but for the purpose of voting - Moodle for me too. Currently exploring SharePoint which may run alongside / with etc.

Another vote for Exchange and Shared Calendar / Public Calendar. iPhone, Blackberry or PDA to enhance it + external access with OWA. Go for Exchange 2010 if you are starting from scratch - much better bit of kit! Our Head was once someone who was quite worried about technology - took quite a bit of convincing to "go there", but now he does everything in Outlook/Exchange and pushes for other staff to check/do the same!

By "Fair Use" are you referring to the patchy area of allowing use of Music in Education? If so, my advice would be to look long and hard at what you put together and have it checked by your LEA legal team - I am having a nightmare trying to sort this out at the minute.

I'd put money on it being a "politically correct" related change. As someone who has employed various NVQs as well as been one himself, I can honest say it is well worthwhile - for the individual as well as the company/school. Wagnerk's information above is top class too - spot on. Shortsighted people will often say that opting for an apprentice is a form of cheap labour, or getting someone to do the jobs that others just won't want to do (I've heard them all!). It isn't though. It is often a chance for the individual to get their foot on the ladder, earn money, get quality training as well as experience and knowledge. It is an amazing opportunity for them to progress, while it also allows the employer flexibility with their staffing as well as the clear reward side too etc. Go for it!

Advocating, no. I don't have all the answers, and I'm sure there are many more experienced and qualified who could make it work. Theoretically, if the punishment for murder was death and society knew it and accepted it, you might find that society automatically placed more importance on teaching basic values and ensuring children stayed within them a lot stricter. This might not ever have happened. As much as I / we would like these kind of punishments in general the conversation is a complete waste of time. We have absolutely no control over our country, live with a corrupt self-serving government who have no interest in working for us. Nothing will change as they don't want it to, and the general UK public are too lazy or scared to force a change.

I've replied on previous Stone threads so don't want to make another long post on the subject, but yep - completely agree with maniac. I've purchased a similar amount of kit and used for slightly longer. There is no supplier in the world who will never have anything go wrong. Stone are no different. A hard drive might go down, a button on a case might break, but it's how suppliers deal with it that matter. Any negative issue I have raised with Stone (and over about 5 years = hardly any) has been rectified immediately. No quibbles, no pointing at disclaimers or small print - just a quick and easy swap out / engineer visit.

As you've had views but no comments I'll step up. It looks fine for what it is. That said, whitepapers don't generally excite me! The information there is factual, accurate (certainly for Moodle anyway - I don't know much about Fronter) and will probably be a useful document for schools looking to opt for either solution without much internal technical ability.
