The lady I've dealt with (and PM'd to the OP) gave completely the opposite impression - knew exactly what she was doing, questioned whether I would prefer alternatives, went through benefits of Software Assurance to make sure we got max value (even though I knew and used previously I decided to let her continue - she seemed quite in to it!) Also fully aware of EES and looking to do a short term extension for another school I represent until details on EES are finalised/released.

Actually, I will add one more thing. If you have a brand new server sitting there which is available, why not install Hyper-V on it (or enable the role if OS is installed). Virtualising Exchange gives you a lot more flexibility in future from a backup / migration point of view.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Dos_Box beat me to it - those instructions are pretty accurate and similar to what I would have posted a link to. I would definitely echo the 'stay calm' bit of his message too. If you panic and start second guessing your every move it makes the job a while lot worse!

What version of Exchange were you running? Is it the only Exchange server in the domain?

I don't use Skype a lot, but one thing which REALLY impressed me when messing around yesterday was the screen share facility within the video call window if you are chatting to someone on a PC. This could be really helpful for remote support as the user could call you from their desktop, you could see their screen on your iPhone and talk them through where to go to fix their issue.

It looks like it might be possible as of today... Link: Skype offers iPhone video calls over 3G ? The Register I haven't tried it yet myself, but certainly looks promising. *EDIT* - I can confirm that the new version DOES work for video calling - tried both 3G and Wireless - both worked well with no lag. Very impressed!

Ah, question I don't know how to answer I'm afraid! I've managed to completely delegate responsibility for WSUS between two of my technicians! In the traditional Microsoft update sense it would have been a hotfix after sp2 I guess?

Is this Outlook accessing internally or externally? Also, can you confirm that Microsoft Updates are up to date on the client? I'm fairly sure there were a couple of hotfixes for Outlook 2003 to connect to Exchange 2010 released a while back.

Talk to a licensing partner. They should be able to give you a full breakdown of all prices and show the comparison between standard pricing and licenses you are able to obtain through the different license options (Select, Campus, SA etc). I would recommend either Pheonix Software or Pugh.

I would echo the nightmare element of trying to work with GoDaddy. Lots of issues with standard SSL and trying to get a UC working wasted huge amounts of time for me, and eventually ended up with a no win situation from their techies resulting in a refund. Comodo win hands down for me - education discounts, fantastic pre-tech sales and after sale support.

Not to detract from FragglePete's post with the specific outstanding issues, but I would reiterate the first paragraph of the post. Richard's involvement in this thread has prompted me to make contact and I have had several communications with him on several issues/projects. For a senior figure to take the time to come here and get involved speaks volumes about that individual, but also reflects well on SWGfL in general.

@rayflemming I understand that pricing isn't being officially published until next year, but wonder if it would be possible for you/MS to provide at least a rough comparison - e.g. School 'x' which pays £15,000 per year on Schools Agreement with 90 staff could see potential savings of up to £x per year under EES?

Our policy is to have a message displayed on two website - the "official" school website (SWGfL Hosted) and Moodle (Internally Hosted). If one was to be down, we would have to very unlucky for the other one to be down too. Additionally, we make parents aware that if the school was to be closed, text messages would be sent out (via Call Parents/Truancy Call) as well as messages played on local BBC radio + separate local radio station. Essentially if they don't see/hear at least one of these, the school is open.

Did they give a detailed reason for it the last time? I don't recall ever having a problem with our site (they only host our official school.la.sch.uk address, not moodle or anything else etc). It's been flawless on all previous/current snow occasions too. I guess it's possible Cornwall and Swindon host servers are different or even in separate areas of the country though..

A thumbs up for Google Analytics! I've just started using Google Analytics on our Moodle site (years after first using on our other sites - not sure why I didn't do it earlier!). Its quite amazing to see how heavily it is used out of hours. Really useful tool.

I've had this before. Ask them for proof, which they won't be able to provide. May also be worth a work with your LA legal department who should have someone in a position to help / find out more.

I would disagree with some of the above. A server is not a portable applience, and even if it is obvious that it remains in continued use, depending on the school/type of server. An experienced PAT tester should realise this and conduct only a visual check and simply note this in his records.

Don't take this as gospel as 2010 is a fairly new beast to me, but having gone the same route as you (and actually still being there some months later for various reasons!) I recall seeing the message myself. It should be fine, but I believe 2003 will more than likely still process SMTP traffic.

Rather than changing details on the general tab, I would normally do it by right-clicking and renaming the user. Can you confirm that you changed the first/last name AND display name in the general tab? If so, can you tell me if you have x.400 properties on the user? Failing that, potentially the GAL may not be replicating?
