We have desktops with both the Atom N270 and N280 inside. There's not much difference, and they handle the usual domain gubbins without any trouble. Flash applications are fine, and the usual applications pose no issues. I can't see the dual-core system providing any noticeable performance boosts, but it's not going to hurt either. A major advantage is that you can't hear them! After the initial fan whirr at startup, they're nearly silent. It's hugely noticeable when you go from a room of standard desktops to these. All in all, they're very nice machines and we'll be getting more when we need to expand.

Unfortunately some people don't seem to think clearing snow off anywhere other than the window is worth the trouble. First of all it's going to coat the cars behind as you drive along, and secondly if you brake there's a good chance it's all going to come sliding forward onto your windscreen. Another bit of advice: Take the time to clear snow off your car as soon as it's stopped snowing. If you wait until later there's a good chance it's going to freeze, and then it's a lot harder to move.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. The routing table, once set up when the machine is switched on, won't replace the ISA server with the phone as the default gateway. It still needs to be scripted or changed manually.

Cheers for the replies all. When I get a bit of time I'm going to automate it, but at the moment I'll make do with my batch file which turns the route on or off, depending on which argument you pass it.

Ah-ha! I've set up the command, I just need to work on how to run it when the phone is tethered.

Our internet connection via the LEA isn't reliable, despite their best efforts. Disruptions to the connection are frequent and I need a solution. I'm halfway there already, but the current method is inconvenient. I have an Android phone with tethering built in. I can plug the phone into the machine via USB and connect to the internet, but I have to disable the NIC to do so (the web browsers continue to try and use the LEA connection if I don't) which is a bit annoying and leads to obvious problems. Is there a way to force internet traffic through the tethered connection if it's present? I'm full up with a cold at the moment so I'm probably missing something pretty obvious. Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm suffering from a stinking cold which wasn't actually that bad until I got in. The obvious conclusion is that work makes me ill.

I have two disks from a Hitachi DVD-Cam, which I need to convert somehow into a single playable DVD. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Haven't had a look myself, but this was leaked a while ago onto a torrent site. After looking at the suite, someone commented that all of the tools are freebies available separately anyway. Or something.

Been looking at the QNAP SS-439 Pro as a contender. That it used 2.5" drives isn't really an issue for us.

qnap seem to be having a lot of good press. They're certainly on my list of possibilities.

We're going to be getting a NAS to run as a secondary backup in another building on site. Should protect against fire etc. Anyone got any recommendations for something that will be reliable that can just be locked away in a cupboard? Ideally it would support RAID5 of three disks plus a hot spare, and have a nicely intuitive web interface. Also, what are the chances of one that switches itself on and off for a backup job, and also accepts a WOL request when data retrieval was required? Thanks all.

Joking aside, there are always going to be methods of circumventing web filters. It's just a matter of time before kids find them. So there are two options: Block access to the internet completely, or try a combination of limiting access to inappropriate content and educating staff and pupils on safe use.
